Wednesdays Really Are The New Fridays For Disney+ As The Streamer Changes Release Schedule For Future Series

When it was announced that Loki would premiere on a Wednesday, we all assumed it was a one-off. However, the likes of What If? and The Book of Boba Fett will no longer debut on Fridays moving forward...

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Disney+ has decided to shift its original series release dates from Fridays to Wednesdays moving forward. When Loki's premiere date was shifted from June 11 to June 9, it felt like a fun PR stunt to raise awareness about the show and treat fans to the Marvel Studios series that little bit sooner.

However, following the news that Loki quickly became the streaming service's most-watched premiere, all future series will now also debut on a Wednesday instead of Friday.

An updated release schedule has been shared below, and this means other 2021 titles - like The Book of Boba Fett, What If?, and Hawkeye - will all also arrive mid-week.

According to the trade, "Sources say the shift is designed to accommodate the increased volume of original content on Disney+. The Wednesday schedule is strictly for original series - meaning The Mandalorian and other Star Wars and Marvel TV series; original movies will continue to bow on Fridays on the streamer."

So, no change for Black Widow then, but this also means movies like that will no longer have to compete with new episodes of Disney+'s TV shows on a Friday. Clearly, Disney is giving a great deal of thought to how they release titles on this service, something that makes sense both in the wake of the pandemic and now people are gravitating more towards streaming.

It also makes it less likely Disney+ shows will have to compete with new releases on the likes of Netflix, HBO Max, and Apple TV+.

Here's that updated release schedule:

  • Monsters at Work from July 2 to July 7
  • Turner & Hooch from July 16 to July 21
  • Behind the Attraction from July 16 to July 21
  • Chip ‘n’ Dale: Park Life from July 23 to July 28
  • Turning the Tables with Robin Roberts from July 30 to July 28
  • The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse batch 2 from July 30 to July 28
  • Growing Up Animal from Aug. 20 to Aug. 18
  • Short Circuit season two from July 30 to Aug. 4

Not surprised. With movie theaters opening back up, Disney wants people to spend their Fridays going to the movies.

And here I was hoping to get some releases dates for The Book of Boba Fett and the Marvel shows. Guess I'll have to make due with just wednesday then.

I also wonder if we'll be getting new releases on monday anytime soon. I doubt Marvel and Star Wars shows will be released on the same day (if they're even gonna have some overlap at all)

Not bad getting episodes earlier.

I also think they did this to increase hype/water cooler talk… when a show bows on friday lots of people havent seen it by the weekend, which is when ppl whove seen it want to talk, and those who still havent are likely spending their weekend doing other things. A show dropping wednesday will likely be seen by many more by the weekend, creating much better conversation

The Problem is that sooner or later you're going to have to choose if they keep only Wednesdays

for example

Moon Knight Episode 1 or Obi-Wan Kanobi Episode 5

@WakandaTech - my friend, let me tell you of the glory days of TGIF and SNICK, where we were treated to entire nights FULL of new episodes of TV shows we loved.

I'm pretty sure Disney Plus can release 2 new episodes on the same day and have people watch them back to back. Honestly, I'd love it. I miss the days of getting multiple new episodes of TV shows on the same night and not having enough VHS players to record them all, never mind running out of DVR space.

I'm so ready for this!

@Waddles - I don't I was already a teenager when Nick stared getting popular in its early days, and didn't start watching till the Double Dare days. Still early on, but not the pre pre stuff. I saw there was also like a Canadian sketch comedy show before that they aired that gave them the green slime gimmick, I wasn't watching then.

I've always been a big kid, watching shows my friends would tease me for. Nobody in my older age bracket understood the genius of Pete and Pete or Doug. But I did lol

Makes sense. Hulu has been releasing new original content on Wednesdays for a long time, why not get it across all Didney platforms.

Makes sense. Iirc, Friday and Saturday evenings have too many competition outside of TV shows. I'm not sure what the current trend is for traditional TV schedules but TWD, GoT, and Breaking Bad came out on Sundays, when people are done for the weekend and can easily relax in front of the TV. Makes me wonder when they'll capitalize on Sundays.

Man, I loved the Friday releases. Me and the Mrs. Would get a takeaway and bottle of wine and it was a great way to end the week. I can't trust myself to drink on a Wednesday night. Plus, she now works on Wednesday nights, so we have to leave it until Thursdays, which means more chance of seeing spoilers. Can't really be annoyed though, we're getting so much Marvel and Star Wars this year

Not surprising. There is a reason Friday’s on cable was where shows went to die. I’m surprised they were ever putting their flagship shows out on that night

Weird that we're essentially less than 2 months away from when What If should be coming out but there's no trailer or release date
