T'Challa fighting style

T'Challa fighting style

Amid all the discussions and hopes to see the Black panther on the big screen, many still ask if they could pull it out and do justice to the character; one area to ponder may begin with the fighting style.

In the comic book, T'Challa, the Black Panther is known for not only being one of the smartest man on the planet, an inventor, a nation's leader and a superhero, he is also pretty much a badass, having mastered an array of fighting skills...

While it all sound awesome on paper, there are never really a clear explanation of what martial art he uses (at least not to me. Much is said about the tech at his disposal, and his strategic mind, but little about the unique fighting style of Wakanda.

Yes, we can infer that he has adopted many of the great fighting technique on the planet, but if we consider the strong and proud culture of Wakanda, it is not foolish to claim that at the very foundation, Wakanda has mastered its own fighting style to fend off enemies.

Now the issue that rises is the following, if there was a Black Panther movie soon, we know that bringing up the techs will be easy, we saw the awesome job with Iron-man; we know that the costume will be cool, just think Batman; we know that even Wakanda will be the bomb...just imagine Asgard or OA, so we know that in that regard, with what is available, scenery wise, Black Panther could be just great. One thing that often throws a wrench in action movies is just that....the action; sometimes movements are too fast, too choreographed, not fast enough, too simplistic or in many cases, simply unrealistic due to too many special effects. The beauty of most successful fighting skills usually stems from the fact that the actors involved actually "practice" martial arts...just think Jet Li, Tony Jaa, Marc Dacascos, and even if we talk comic book movies,Blade (especially the 1st one)...I mean you see Wesley Snipes Blade fight, it is not that Blade series fight...nope it isn't.

So I assume that any Black Panther actor will hopefully practice Martial Arts or at least go through a serious training to a point where the action seems real. Essentially a man that can go head to head with Cap, Wolverine or Iron fits must have quite a set of skills in his arsenal.

So in a movie, what do you think producer should opt for? what martial art to you envision be used to base the Black Panther fighting style? In Reginald Hudlin book, one issue has T'Chall adn his cousin practicing, and it looks a lot like Capoeira, I think that could work, plus its origin is African so that could add some flavor...mix it up with other martial art and you could design a fighting style that looks unique and can pass for Wakandan fighting style...

Any other ideas?

The title "martial arts" is given to such a wide array of things. It's really just a practiced combat with either cold weapons or no weapons at all. So unless BP becomes some soldier who uses guns & grenades, appears to have no training in fighting, simply doesn't fight in his own movie, or relies solely on his energy daggers (which may or may not be considered cold weapons, therefor may or may not apply) then I think you have no reason to worry that Black Panther is not going to use martial arts. I honestly think none of my stated possibilities will occur in the movie. Anyways, I would like to see real life Eastern African fighting styles to heavily influence Black Panther in this movie. I think keeping it simple and as nonfictionalized as possible is the way to go. Then again, I'm not a big Black Panther fan so whatever the majority of the real fans say is probably the way to go. It's not like most people can pick up on fake fighting anyways.

I wouldn't mind T'Challa using a bit of Kupigana Ngumi. It's quick, it disarms your opponent, and visually it'd look beyond amazing seeing him take down a group of soldiers or even Shield agents with it.
Shackle hands would be good for close combat aswell.

Capoeira, Kupigana Ngumi, Nuba, and I suppose some martial arts based of a cats natural movements. As long as the fighting is organic and they are discribed as a warrior tribe I dont mind what style they use.

Black Panther/T'Challa is a master of all African Martial Arts. He has fundamental Knowledge of many other styles and is very fond of JKD philosophy. So much so he has quoted Bruce Lee in multiple fights.

I Would take several African styles already mentioned and make them more practical for combat by using JKD philosophy. Incorporate Chinese Kunh Fu Tiger Claw & Leopard Paw. Then top it all off with Capoeira for acrobatics and fluidity. Capoeira can also be considered a system with it's roots in Africa. It was a style created by African slaves in Brazil. They were training to revolt against the Portuguese and they disguised there training by making it seem like a ritualistic dance.

Another key thing to remember is he has Eaten the Heart Shaped Herb which effects make him the Equivalent of Captain America physically. Many people don't know this and would be surprised to see Panther doing super thing much like people complaining about caps fighting scene. They are both Low level enhanced Super Humans. Cap has tackled a Work Van from the side and BP has taken down a Rhino. These details can not be overlooked.

Interesting article. You could add African stick fighting as well to the list that the others mentioned above. What about Krav Maga? Its quick and it allows one to disarm anyone armed with a knife, gun etc. Wakandan martial arts can assimilate various fighting styles. Also Free Running would suit the character very well.

Wakanda would look awesome just like Asgard. I think South Africa would be an ideal place to use as Wakanda because.

@ThaMessenger07 - These are some interesting articles of Black Panther and and traditional African martial arts and history. I really would be cool to see authentic African fighting styles in the BP movie.

lol Wing Chun is awesome I'm studying it now but Bruce Lee's philosophy of JKD is more of what panther would need. I would like Daredevil to be a Fundamental JKD fighter with a heavy influence of Boxing and Wing Chun. But panther being superhuman an all would able to get away with a little more. So those Impractical styles become very practical. Plus Wing Chun is what they used for The Bourne Series, which is awesome but I would like to avoid that kind of combat and get some more distance in with Panther.
