FANTASTIC FOUR Script Rumored To Be Undergoing Another Rewrite With New Scribes Brought On Board

Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four reboot was reportedly scheduled to begin production this summer, but we're now hearing that the script is set to undergo some potentially extensive rewrites...

It sounds like the Fantastic Four script still isn't quite where Marvel Studios would like it to be.

Despite previous reports indicating that cameras were set to begin rolling around April, we recently heard that production had been pushed back, and filming is not expected to get underway until Q3 (between July and September).

No specific reason was provided at the time, but we may now know what was behind the delay.

According to Daniel Richtman and rDCULeaks, the script is undergoing another rewrite, with Academy Award-nominated The Disaster Artist and The Fault in Our Stars writers Michael Weber and Scott Neustadter have been brought on to work on Josh Friedman’s script before filming starts.

We're not sure how extensive these rewrites will be, but we can't imagine the story is going to be completely revamped at this stage in the game. Also, Richtman notes that the new script should be ready "within a month or so."

We're still waiting on that official announcement, but the cast is believed to b e locked in, and it's looking highly likely that Pedro Pascal's Reed Richards will be joined by Vanessa Kirby (Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning) as Sue Storm, aka the Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things) as Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Punisher, The Bear) as Ben Grimm, aka the Thing.

There are rumors that both Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) and Mads Mikkelsen (Rogue One) are top picks to play Doctor Doom, but other actors are sure to be in contention.

The team's most prolific foe is not expected to have a significant role in the reboot (in fact, he may only show up in the post-credits scene), but the villain could well emerge as the new big bad of the Marvel Cinematic Universe - especially after the recent news that Marvel has decided to part ways with Kang actor Jonathan Majors.

Several well-placed sources have claimed that Doom will be one of the main villains of Avengers: Secret Wars.

Javier Bardem is said to be the top choice for Galactus, but his schedule may prevent him from signing on. The Eater of Worlds' herald is believed to be Silver Surfer, but a female take on the character. A recent rumor claimed that Anya Taylor-Joy is being eyed for that role.

Matt Shakman will direct FF. Plot details are still a mystery, but Kevin Feige has confirmed that this will not be another origin story for the super-team.

“A lot of people know this origin story. A lot of people know the basics. How do we take that and bring something that they’ve never seen before?” he said in a 2022 interview, comparing this new take on the heroes to Marvel Studios' pact with Sony to bring Spider-Man into the MCU. “We’ve set a very high bar for ourselves with bringing that to the screen.”

No, it's a good thing. Keep working on it until you have it right.

@Goldboink - they need to stop micromanaging and just make the movies , all these last minute changes is how they got in this mess

@ShimmyShimmyYA -
IMHO it was lack of supervision that led to the crap content we got post Endgame. They just threw money around and folks went off in a corner and make POS's like Eternals. FF it too important.

@ShimmyShimmyYA - Films get rewritten all of the time. Even when there's one credited writer. Either he rewrites or someone gets an uncredited rewrite. It's literally nothing to complain about.

@GeneralChaos - Heck films get rewrites whilst being filmed and indeed after initial filming, including ones which are considered all time greats. Know not all will agree they are amongst the list of greats but in regard to one trilogy where it was well reported as such LOTR every morning there were changes to scripts.

I own scripts from top hit films and they are full of changes, sometimes major ones and normaly a tell they are not legit if they don't.

So without specifics saying they are doing them is meaningless.

GeneralChaos - 1/26/2024, 6:01 PM
@Apophis71 - Exactly. A film being rewritten means nothing. It's business as usual except to some blogger looking to act as if they got a scoop. The film hasn't even been cast so of course the script likely isn't ready, either.

@Goldboink - the clock is working against them. Very soon they are just going to start filming when the entire thing probably needs to start from scratch.

@Goldboink - that’s a point too. They overreached but now they’re trying to over correct

@GeneralChaos - I know film get rewrites all the time but shit like changing the ending of Ant man 3 2 weeks before release is insane , all the rewrites they do are overboard , it’s micromanaging in the worst way because like goldboink said it’s them throwing shit at a wall, we’ve heard the stories where they don’t even lock in a design until the last hour and even might change it last second just because

@Ryguy88 - They don't actually have to do anything. Disney is solvent and not relying on the BO for this movie to pay the rent.

@ShimmyShimmyYA -
Or maybe after a number of missteps they are just trying to get it right. FF is a hard one to do correctly. Iron Man is easy in comparison. It's not like the FF can go against the Anti FF like most of the other Marvel stories.

@Goldboink - they are relying on it to fit within their slate though - they've been trying to get this thing off the ground for a while now.

I truly hope it is good because I'd love to see an awesome F4 movie. We all know there is a ton of potential there.

@Ryguy88 - True that. If the headline was "Everything's working out fine for FF, great film expected" you wouldn't click through to read it or take the time to comment. These guys know what they are doing.

Oh, and if they are smart they won't have this trying to squeeze into some huge puzzle. Make a good FF. That's all they have to do.

@Goldboink - the change of director and writers and the difficulty getting actors to sign on leads me to believe its hasnt been working out fine.

@Goldboink - No because it seems like the Marvel brass doesn't even know what "right" is anymore. They've had all of these projects now that have had to be rewritten that haven't turned out all that much better. It's just a complete and utter mess over there right now.

tRuckRogers46A
tRuckRogers46A - 1/27/2024, 6:57 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - I think these changes will be what gets them out of the mess.
If they get the script right first then they won't have to try to fix it in the edit or have to do loads of reshoots.
That's how they got in the mess in the first place.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 1/27/2024, 7:55 AM
@McMurdo - The fact is had three novels to pull from should have had reduced need for rewrites of scripts not increased ones if anything but was put as an example where reported it happened constantly up until they started filming and every single day of filming. However that practice is relatively normal, certainly common anyway which is what I was saying meaning a report of rewrites before filming starts is meaningless without specifics.
McMurdo
McMurdo - 1/27/2024, 9:48 AM
@Apophis71 - the Lord of the Rings is massive. You had to be able to rewrite as you went it's why the films ended up so brilliantly.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 1/27/2024, 10:58 AM
@McMurdo - STILL doesn't negate that rewrites are normal so without specifics is meaningless and not on it's own indicative of anything one way or another. This isn't defending anything just saying it is normal practice to have constant rewrites. As I say I have a lot of scripts used in big films that are not akin to a LOTR sittuation such as ones for most TNG movies and they are all full of rewrites and alterations, oft small but sometimes major, this is not uncommon. This is a thing, pre-filming where it can be argued both ways as a good sign or bad but ultimately a nothing story if no specifics given.

I would go as far as saying however show me a film where they were not still doing rewrites up until the day of filming and alterations during and you would be showing me an example that turned out to be a BAD film not a good one (although obviously some bad films had constant rewrites too, again, it is a nothingburger of a story without specifics given).
