THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS Director Reveals Red Ghost Deleted Scene (And Why We'll Never Get To See it)

The Fantastic Four: First Steps director Matt Shakman has revealed what the cut sequence featuring John Malkovich's Red Ghost entailed, and explains why we're unlikely to ever see it officially released.

In the teaser trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, we got a first look at John Malkovich as Red Ghost. At the time, we didn't know how the villain would factor into the story, and recently learned that the Oscar-nominee had been cut from the movie entirely.

Red Ghost was still in the movie during May's test screenings, so based on feedback from audiences, Marvel Studios and filmmaker Matt Shakman must have decided then that something about the character wasn't working.

Talking to Phase Hero, The Fantastic Four: First Steps helmer explained, "We wanted to get the sense of history. We wanted these characters to feel lived in. We wanted the city to feel lived in. This is a real family, and they've been doing this for four years. Part of that was showing all the things they've done along the way."

"Building the Future Foundation, defeating Red Ghost, Mad Thinker, Mole Man...it was part of building the history for them so we could jump in and see them change as a family when a child is introduced."

"We had an opening that involved a lot of action about the Red Ghost," Shakman continued. "We had an incredible performance from John Malkovich. It was just so much material when we were trying to get to that present-day moment when their world changes and Franklin's arrival becomes imminent."

"We had Red Ghost trying to steal a rocket ship with his apes, Reed trying to defeat him and outwitting him," he said of what the scene entailed. "They had a lot of really fun stuff. We used snippets of it in that montage you see where he's kicking one of the Super-Apes into the water."

Shakman added, "You can see in the credits Reed getting his face pulled by a baboon, which is an homage to Alex Ross."

That glimpse of Mister Fantastic battling a Super-Ape in the end credits appears to suggest we could eventually see this as an extended deleted scene. Alas, The Fantastic Four: First Steps director shot down the idea of Malkovich's work as Red Ghost ever being officially released.

"He's brilliant, and the work that he did in this movie was extraordinary," Shakman told Elite Daily in a separate interview. "There are so many visual effects involved that those scenes remain unfinished, so that’s not possible."

"He's one of my favorite actors, one of my favorite people, and he really crushed it. So yeah, I hope so," he replied when asked about the chances of Malkovich showing up elsewhere in the MCU.

Like the superpowered Serpent Society's scenes and The Leader's original design in Captain America: Brave New World, it's a great shame that we'll never get to see what might have been. Still, unlike that movie, The Fantastic Four: First Steps wasn't a troubled production.

Instead, it seems Marvel Studios wanted to make it a two-hour, easy-to-watch blockbuster, and the montage exploring the team's origin story and recapping a few of their past adventures must have been more effective than an extended battle with Red Ghost and his Super-Apes.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is now playing in theaters.

That's a shame because the first 20 minutes coulda used that heist scene. Some display of powers in a real beat early on woulda been nice.

This movie could've done with more fun villains at the start. I was pretty disappointed with Mole Man's role in this in general.

In fact, I was kinda disappointed with all the villains. Galactus was missing his philosophical ethos and just wanted to steal a baby. Then Shalla-Bal was just a worse version of Norrin Radd.

Heard good things about this film, but never understood having someone like John Malkovich in a film, include him in the marketing, and remove him in the editing room. At least, Transformers had him and let him have some fun.

Spider-Man 4 almost had him, and it's interesting to see how that film would turn out, having seen some BTS stills and storyboards for his Vulture.

@IAmAHoot - the movie industry revolves around good and comolete-ish scripts.

Marvel just got really lucky that they got away with it at the start, but it is now catching up to them.

The multiverse saga is a mess, and it is obvious there is no concrete plan and they are just going for band aid solutions.

@vectorsigma - Which of the Russo's MCU films, and their god-forbid incomplete scripts, were a mess that they just got lucky with?
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 7/27/2025, 9:24 AM
@IAmAHoot - i think i was clear.

The multiverse saga is the one that messy.

And marvel got lucky with phases 1-3 using this frankemstein method and it wasnt as jarring back then as there was one big plan which was the infinity saga.

So phase 4 - present the poor quality with poor/incomplete scripts are now catching up

@IAmAHoot - the Russo mcu films were great I agree.

But im interested how they will perform in this era of the mcu. Nothing is really clicking, they dont have much buildup for doom unlike thanos. So it is not the same conditions with their previous films

I feel that a first Fantastic Four movie should have had them battle Mole Man and Giganto at the beginning, Red Ghost and his Super Apes later and at the end Sue would broker peace between the real Subterania with it's glowing crystals, giant creatures and moloids and they would team up against the Red Ghost and defeat him.
Franklin could have been born at the end.
Then the Silver Surfer would arrive and herald the coming of Galactus and we would get a look at his massive ship Taar II coming for earth.
The story of them defeating Galactus should have been saved for the 2nd movie.
That way, Doom could have been introduced more organic.
But they needed Franklin for Avengers: Doomsday and rather rush through 60+ years of stories instead of taking their time.

Superman had 130 minutes of story.
F4 had the same, they just decided to cut 15 minutes of it to make the movie shorter instead of flowing better.
Ben had almost nothing to do in the film.

This should've been the intro to the movie. We get to see a showcase of all the teams powers as they stop a second-tier villain as some uplifting music plays, THEN you cut to Reed and Sue relaxing at home talking about getting pregnant. Opening a F4 movie the way they did was a complete fart in church.

@JayTweIve - I get what you mean but I like it opening with the pregnancy scene since it immediately sets the parenthood theme of the film and shows that the characters will be the focus rather then action set pieces

@TheVisionary25 - Yeah it's not a major issue, I just didn't love opening the movie with that scene.

I'm really curious to see how this does at the box office. I can't picture little kids or adults with a short attention span walking out of this and saying it was amazing, i'm not sure there was enough meat on the bone for those groups. I enjoyed it overall but it really comes across as more of a "thinking mans" Fantastic Four movie instead of just the standard Marvel summer blockbuster.
