RED SONJA Star Matilda Lutz Reveals That Upcoming Reboot Is "Very Women-Empowered"

Red Sonja is set to return to theaters later this year and lead star Matilda Lutz has now revealed that filmmaker M.J. Bassett's interpretation of the iconic fantasy character will be less "male-gazed."

This year's Red Sonja reboot hasn't had the easiest of journeys to the big screen, losing multiple filmmakers - including X-Men helmer Bryan Singer - and even its main star (Thunderbolt's Hannah John-Kamen). M.J. Bassett has since stepped behind the camera to direct the action, with Matilda Lutz tapped to bring the iconic warrior to life in a movie fans hope will do this character justice.

It's been nearly four decades since the character appeared in a movie, with Brigitte Nielsen bringing the iconic hero to life way back in 1985. Now, in an interview with CBR (via SFFGazette.com) at South by Southwest, Lutz shared new insights on how this iteration will differ from her predecessors.

"So, what I can tell about Red Sonja, is that the first ones and the comics were [made] with a very male-gazed orientation," she explained. "This is a completely different story, and it's very women-empowered, which I loved about the script."

Not everyone will be happy with that given how sexualised Red Sonja often is on the page, but this lines up with comments made by Bassett last year. She confirmed this version won't be depicted as a victim of sexual assault and, instead of delving into "sexual politics," the reboot will focus on the character as a "human being in the world of femininity."

Joining Lutz in the cast are Wallis Day, Robert Sheehan, Michael Bisping, Martyn Ford, Eliza Matengu, Manal El-Feitury, Katrina Durden, and Oliver Trevena. The latter will play Tr’aal, a gladiator-type warrior who joins Sonja in her fight against the evil emperor.

Sacha Baron Cohen was once approached to play the villainous magician Kulan Gath, but is thought to have turned the role down. As a result, it's unclear whether the character is still in the movie and, if he is, who will play him.

The beloved She-Devil With a Sword's story began in comics in 1973, and now 50 years later she remains the greatest sword-and-sorcery female heroine of them all. She's hacked and slashed her way into the hearts of fantasy and comics fans all around the world.

Inspired by the sword and sorcery comic books of the same name from Dynamite Entertainment, the Red Sonja movie is based on the heroine created by Robert E. Howard and adapted by Roy Thomas. This version of the character is described as a fearsome warrior boasting a high degree of skill with a sword, though no specific story details have been revealed.

Red Sonja is expected to be released in theaters later this year.

Idc about Red Sonja. Never read or watched anything with the character in it.

This just sounds bad. If it became popular enough because of X reason, why would they want to get rid of it in the movie? IF if you're going to market to a different audience, then why even make it? Will this be another Charlie's Angels (2019), situation? You make and market the film not for men, then get upset when men don't watch it?

@kazuma - do you admit that you don’t know shit about the topic and then present an opinion. Okay.

@Dotanuki - he knows what historically has been the appeal of the character, and he knows this article is saying that they are steering this project in a different direction. His opinion and right to post it are completely valid here.

@Dotanuki - I said this movie isn't for me as I'm not a fan of the character. I'm questioning who this movie IS for if it's not being made for the fans.
They say the series has always leaned into the sexualization, and been geared towards men. Then who is this movie for, if they plan on gearing it towards women?
If the fanbase is X, why make a movie for Y?

Was it that hard to understand?

@kazuma - It does not say anywhere it is geared towards women, says it is very women-empowered but then that applies to the lead character of a film like Alien which I wouldn't call geared towards women and SHOULD apply to a character like Red Sonja regardless if they make the outfit less revealing or ditch the rape aspects of her backstory.

All it is basicaly saying is this won't be soft porn without substance, ie will be a strong narrative about a female warrior (according to Lutz).

@BorginToofer - "what historically has been the appeal of the character" is a sexy lady in a chain mail bikini, and that's what this movie is about. Y'all will be okay.

@kazuma - Possibly not, we can but hope that it IS about a strong story with a good script about a powerfull female warrior with suffice threat/strong antagonists but even then could still turn out to be bad, lol. I mean on paper it shouldn't be THAT hard to do a sword and sorcery type of thing with a strong female lead but then look how bad the last attempt to adapt Red Sonja was, lol.

Duh. Did they really even need to say it? Do we really need to be punched in the face with all that agenda sh!t? Just make it great.

I'm crossing my fingers. Red is a great character.

@Feralwookiee - An empowered woman can walk around all day nude if she wants technicaly, not saying they won't avoid it but the distinction between woman-empowered or not regarding sexy scenes is down to context and consent.

This movie will be as successful as the Conan remake.

To make it clear for every idiot out there:

The original Red Sonja comic character was no damsel in distress, but a fierce and strong woman despite having a hard past.

Was the chainmail-bikini controversial?
Yes, it doesn't make sense to war something like that.
Do i need nudity?
No.
Do i think the movie will carry female empowerment so far as to ruin the movie?
Sadly yes.

@MarvelZombie616 - will probably be less sucessful than conan

Conan had success

Sonja had 1 crappy movie

Apophis71 - 3/11/2024, 6:55 AM
@MarvelZombie616 - Yeh, that is a fair way to put it, am I concerned they will frack it up, yes, and do I think the way they are talking about it will negatively impact interest from some folk who would normaly be into a Red Sonja adaption, yes.

However Sonja doesn't need to have been raped or walk around almost nekkid to work, should always be an empowered woman regardless of all of that stuff and easily be great without it. Heck not only was the chainmail bikini not make much sense for war for a redhead doesn't make much sense considering the climate of the region it is set in either, lol (that is not to say I would not enjoy seeing her in it cos of course I would, lol).

@MarvelZombie616 - We'll see if it's more successful than the terrible 1985 version, even though Arnie was in it.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 3/11/2024, 1:45 PM
@jj2112 - Shouldn't be hard to be more succesfol than the 85', depending how you measure it obviously, as it only made $7M on an $18M budget (ie lost over half what it cost to make). It was also a BAD film, even if it has it's fan's, with an aggragate score way down around 20%.

Basicaly as long as they don't spend silly amounts there is a decent chance it won't loose as much money in terms of ratio (even if total loss is higher) if it is at least half decent and reasonable chance of turning a decent profit. That said I fear they will spend too much and turn out a lousy film whilst causing increasing backlash with how they talk about the film so...

...avoid CGI as much as possible, make it for lets say around $50M with a decent story/script they should do OK but should go into production expecting a top end of $250M WWBO in the current market to my mind. If they budget over $100M they are lining themselves up to be a flop even if critics aggragate around the 60% mark.

@MarvelZombie616 - That chainmail bikini was iconic and btw was more than Conan wore. Conan went into battle wearing only a loincloth!

We need another successful Charlie’s Angels 2019 and The Marvels.

The films are peak high profile cinema.

@DarthAlgar - Wow its not as if male dominated films like The Flash or Shazam ever fail! I think there are plenty of examples of that. And women led films deserve the right to fail just as much.

I don't think people would expect anything less. I think the bigger question is if they'll scale down the sex to appeal to a broader audience.

This is why this movie will flop, Men are your target audience,I'm not saying women don't like Red Sonja, they do. However you take a look at those Dynamite comic book covers, they are aimed at men.
