BOX OFFICE: THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES Takes Aim At $85M+ Weekend

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies has had something of an unusual release, debuting on Wednesday rather than Friday. However, with both a solid looking weekend ahead and the past few days combined, it appears as if the final movie in the trilogy will be another hit...

After opening this past Wednesday, Peter Jackson's conclusion to his Hobbit trilogy already reached $16.6 million by Friday, but combine that with an expected $54 million this weekend, and it's marched straight to the top of the North American box office with around $88 million. These numbers come courtesy of Variety, and while the estimates on some sites are slightly lower, this is still more than initial predictions of $80 million or less. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies faces stiff competition from both Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb and Annie, and while both of those are a long way behind it, they've obviously still made a dent in its takings. For comparisons sake, An Unexpected Journey opened to $84.6 million and The Desolation of Smaug took $73.6 million. Are you guys planning on seeing The Battle of the Five armies this weekend?

Saw it last Thursday, easily the best of the trilogy though none of them are as good as any LOTR movie. I'm interested to see how they'll work when watched at home as I think they'll flow significantly better that way.

I had to watch the film the first time in IMAX3D in horrendous High Frame Rate format. I guess it was good for business since you want to rush out and see it again without the distraction. It's absolutely terrible.

Awesome film tho. Best VS-fights ever and sick Legolas ownages.

Loved this movie! The battle went on for a little bit too long and there were a couple of unnecessary scenes/characters, but overall it was a very satisfying end to the middle earth saga. I hope it crosses $1 billion worldwide

Planning to watch this again. I saw it earlier this week, even though it was a great experience, there were way too many people talking and using their phones during the movie. It was really distracting for me. But that's still a really good movie, and I don't usually pay to see the same movie twice, so that's something.

@InfiniteMonkey
No nudity but there's plenty of moaning from Tauriel.

Saw it tuesday and I loved it. Thinking about going again tomorrow. I still get a kick out of people who think The Hobbit trilogy was supposed to be as good as LOTR trilogy.

I wouldn't waste my time reporting you "mate" but whoever did apparently deserves a round of applause. Oh and I'm not 12 by the way. Lol

For those who have seen it,is it worth seeing in 3D? I'll admit the only reason I saw the last one in 3D was for Smaug but the rest of the movie could have done without it.

It doesn't deserve the success. I'm wondering about what happened to Peter Jackson. How can the man behind brilliant LOTR trilogy produce these substandard Hobbit movies? He's suffering from George Lucas syndrome. CGI was very distracting. It's clear that PJ didn't care about the book at all this time, he added many unnecessary things to make a trilogy from short book. One long movie would have been enough.

the movie is good too, I'd watch it again in same format !

Man it's such a bitter sweet ending! We get to see the end of the Hobbit trilogy, but at the same time it'll be the end of Jacksons middle earth. I don't want to experience that feeling again!

True the Hobbit movies are not as good as the Rings movies, but what is?
Great last movie and still better than most movies this year.

I wish the beginning of the film was the end of the second Hobbit movie. It wasn't as intense as it could have been because you where just dropped into it.

I like the movie though.

Saw it last night in HFR 3D. It's the best Hobbit film and my second favorite middle earth film (the first is the two towers). I'm definitely going to see it one more time in HFR 3D.

I won't say "he just didn't care" because I don't think that was the case at all. If anything I think he cared a little too much, got too attached to his version of Middle-Earth, and just couldn't let it go. Not until it had worn out its welcome, at least

Definitely the best of the 6 imo, although I always liked The Hobbit, more than LotR. That and i'm a huge fan of Hobbits and Dwarves. So this was pretty much the movie for me.

I just cant believe people actually like this movie...

Are u all blind? This movie sucked so bad. It was a total letdown compared to LotR. I know it should stand on its own but those fightscenes were so over the top and physics never ever deployed. In addition I was never worrying about any of the characters. Story was flat and Alfrid was JarJarBinks. I'll rate this with a 2/10 max and I am a huge fan of PJ previous works. Its just that he failed in this triology except for a few cool moments like the riddle scene or Smaugs awakening. Overall it looked like the screenplay was written by a 7 year old child when playing with toys.
I have to mention here that I am a big Tolkienfan and I've read all of his Middle-Earth related books several times, already before the LotR came out in 2001. I was so fired up for this triology... In the end I only got disappointed.

'll rate his middle earth movies in chronological order

Fellowship of the Ring 10/10
The two Towers 9/10
Return of the King 9.5/10
An unexpected Journey 6/10
Desolation of Smaug 6/10
Battle of the lols 2/10
