Clash of the Titans is set to be released March 26th and Warner is still on the fence whether to go 3D or not. We had previously been told by the director, Louis Letterier that Titans would not go 3D. It sounds like the studiio is hedging their bet on this. WB has gone so far as to order a 3D test of the movie. They will convert 2D scenes from the movie and screen them. The biggest reason for this is the box office success of Avatar.
With conversions, 2D films -- whether newly produced movies or classic titles slotted for release, such as the first two Toy Story movies - are run through a process that turns 2D images into 3D. Most 3D movies, including Avatar, are shot in 3D from the start.
Why go back and forth on 3D? It comes down to dollars and cents. The studios see a large chunk of that two to four dollar upcharge. One of the main reasons Warner Bros. is grappling with this is another 3D movie is coming out the same weekend: DreamWorks Animation’s big animated feature How to Train Your Dragon.
The word from a studio insider on the prospect of securing thousands of 3D screens for the Sam Worthington movie: "No problem."
Co-produced by Legendary Pictures, “Titans” is a re-imagining of a 1981 film that starred Laurence Olivier in the character of Zeus. The role is played by Liam Neeson in the remake, appearing opposite Sam Worthington’s Perseus in the mythology-based actioner.
