Anyone else getting a bit of siege of Helms Deep from The Two Towers vibe from this? Anyway, looking good so far. Lets hope it IS good, as early preview reports were mixed to say the least.

Here's the synopsis..

In the four nations of Air, Water, Earth, and Fire, the individual elements can be controlled by magical people known as "benders." When the Fire Lord launches a brutal war against the other nations, it leads to a century of destruction with no hope for the future in sight. Caught between combat and courage, the young warrior Aang discovers he is the lone Avatar with the power to manipulate all four elements. He teams with Katara, a Waterbender, and her brother, Sokka, to restore balance to their war-torn land.

Hehehehe. Benders.

And another look at the latest trailer...

The Last Airbender hits theaters July 1st.

This movie looks great!

Yeah, people standing at a wall, a pan around to an approaching enemy...Every time this happens in a movie from now on they are totally ripping of Helms Deep. Psh.

GRAMMAR POLICE!

haha, Hellna, I never said it was ripping off Rings, I said it gave me a vibe. And its more than just the camera work. Also, the "has" "have" thing really depend on your perspective. If you see yahoo as a singular entity and not a website run by many different people then has is accurate, if not, its have. As in, "Those guys over at yahoo have.." See?

I love the animated series, and this movie looks both faithful and epic to me! Can't wait until next Friday.

@ Ror --Touché. I stand corrected!

I hope this movie can measure up to LOTR. It depends on how MKS handles it. He is a great storyteller, and I think that the die-hard fans of the animated series will find disappointment if they are expecting all of the silliness that went along with the animated story. So far it appears to be a good translation to live action and the big screen. Keep up the great posts man.

I'm not seeing the comedy through the previews. I hope the movie has me ROFL like the cartoon usually did.

is this going to be in like 3 separate movies?
seems like the preview showed a LOT of what was in the whole 3 seasons of the cartoon.... I just don't know how they will fit all that in one movie.... Cause for them to fit all that into one movie, it would jump around a lot without someone knowing whats going on... that is to say for someone that has not seen the cartoon series... I know most of the cartoon was fluff from the main story line.. but even with all the important shows that lined up to the final battle..... thats a lot of stuff!

Like what footage? If you could describe it that would be appreciated, because I don't see what you're talking about. This all looks like Season 1 to me.

I hope James Cameron is watching to see what a real Avatar movie looks like.

Shyamalan may have just made the one film that could save his career.

Ok, so I just finished watching book one for the first time and I understood/noticed multiple elements from the trailers that is in the original source material. The biggest difference is how Ang summons the tsunami, he's not combined with the water spirit, but still in avatar mode. The look, the scenes, the dialogue, even manner of speach seems to all be extremely close to the cartoon. Oh and InstigatorGIRL it's book two episode 5 that Sokka says, "Boomerang you really do come back" it's after he loses it to the Rough Rhino squad and they attack the one earth village during avatar day. After he said it, it reminded me of the conversation the other day on the other posted clip.

My question was is this a three part movie? I have seen a still picture of Toph though... don't remember if she was in the first season though or not... and I did see the dragon that showed Aang how to fire bend in this preview... that was season 3 of the show....
jshark
jshark - 6/24/2010, 9:50 PM
@WarNoodle- Toph is not in book one, the dragon shows up to tell Ang how to speak to avatar Roku(the previous fire bending one) in book one but in spirit form.
WarNoodle
WarNoodle - 6/24/2010, 9:58 PM
jshark - oh forgot about that part... well.. I have seen a picture of Toph in a still photo though.. I will hunt that down. but again... can anyone tell me if this movie is telling the story of the whole series? or are they making this into 3 separate movies?

Ror@ Good job! I really don't have many doubts that this is going to be a thoroughly enjoyable movie. It probably helps that I am one who doesn't need the whole story to jive with the source material. Just what I see as key components and my key components probably differ from others. Subjectivity is such a funny thing. I have not been able to find any previews on the film yet, except for early rough screenings done a few months ago.

Seaotter@ There isn't going to be the humor that was in the cartoons, but I posted an article that should be on page 2 that shows Momo and the more light-hearted side that we haven't seen in the other trailers. There will be some humor in the movie, but more subtle. They can't do it to the extent they did in the cartoon because on the big screen it will come across as too cheesy.

jshark@ Not sure what you are referring to with Ang summoning the tsunami. In the trailer it appears that he is in Avatar form and in the cartoon he is as well.
jshark
jshark - 6/24/2010, 10:24 PM
@Ranger- In the cartoon he is combined with the water spirit while in avatar mode, but the trailer shows him by himself.
@War- I just finished book 2 episode 6, Toph makes her first appearance in this episode. And from what I understand from previous articles this is a trilogy. Each book will be a movie.
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 6/24/2010, 10:44 PM
jshark@ Yes, this is the first of a trilogy and Toph will be in the second and third film.

Okay, I follow you now on the water spirit thing. I am okay if they just keep him in Avatar form the whole time without showing the Water Spirit. It could have been too difficult for them to do the Water Spirit scenes justice on the big screen.

Anyone know if Toph is going to be in this?
jshark
jshark - 6/25/2010, 12:51 AM
@Ranger- I totally agree, I thought watching it in cartoon form was kinda goofy.
@User- We'll see how it goes. I've watched a few animes and I was like that's it?! NOOOOOOO!! Then there's been some that just ended and I was like WTF!! I'm keeping up with the latest Bleach and Naruto episodes and today's Naruto made me very emotional today, I can't believe the direction they went. But I don't want to post any spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

Personally, i find the LOTR films to be extremely over rated. I've enjoyed them but they are certainly not the be all/end all of epic fantasy cinema. As for the cartoon series this film is based on, i very much enjoyed it but not enough to be too critical of what this film appears to be. I actually very much prefer the looks of this film more than the actual cartoon. Granted i haven't seen each and every episode of the series but as vibes and feels go, this grips me way waaaaaaayyyyy more and i can't wait to see how it looks on the big screen! And let it be known, i still really [frick]ing hate M Night Shamalakaboomboom!!! But he just might redeem himself if this turns out great and if he continues making great films such as this that aren't smeared with the stink of his own farts which he seems to be so fond of. We'll see.

@jshark
Perhaps what they showed in the trailers was the Aang in Avatar mode right before the Water Spirit overcame him. Maybe it's even right behind the big wave that rises over those soldiers. I'm sure Shyamalan wouldn't want to spoil everything by revealing it in a few previews.
