The Oscar-winning actress made a surprise appearance at Disney's D23 Expo this year. At the event, footage of the film was screened for those in attendance. Most reactions were cautiously positive, and described some of the special effects footage as looking quite a bit like Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland (2010).

“Maleficent” is the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.

I'm interested, just on the basis that we rarely get films focused on villains and how they became villains.

I'd love to have a villain who is evil just because.

What if... Maleficent Was An Orion Slave Girl?

I've always imagined Maleficent to have been evil from the start, not good turned evil. Also, that synopsis makes it sound like she's going to have a change of heart at the end of the movie.

@Minghagz, I believe that they're doing that in order to make her sound more believable. As being evil from the start doesn't seem "realistic" to anyone anymore.

It's basically 'Wicked' for Disney.

@RexBlazer1, understandable but I was talking more along the lines of hero turned villain. Especially because the synopsis suggests that the "good guys" were originally bad guys. Either way, I'm still interested.

Don't you just love it when villains are turned into tragic anti-heroes? Why can't a villain be evil and that is it?
RexBlazer1
RexBlazer1 - 8/14/2013, 7:39 PM
@Minghagz, Yeah, I don't understand the fascination with making the bad guys more sympathetic than the good guys myself. And I really don't get why people are so interested in the Jerkass hero. You see that a lot in the stuff Alan Moore writes.

I'm tired of this sympathetic BS. Especially with female villains! 3 thus far in recent memory: Queen Ravenna (Snow White & The Huntsman), Theodora (Oz, The Great and Powerful), and now this. WTF? The great thing about Maleficent is that she's evil for the sake of it!

Why are we all so villain-happy?

@RexBlazer1, yeah I have to agree with you. The fascination with it is starting to get old for me personally. You mentioned Alan Moore, and I may get hate for this, but I feel like he tried to go that route with the Killing Joke by the way it ended and with the backstory he gave. Don't get me wrong because I LOVE that comic, but I feel like there are some villains that don't deserve sympathy because of how "evil" they are.

Just got back from D23 and Disneyland last night (well 3am EST to be more precise) and I have to say that I'm still on the fence on this one but my lady actually is more hopeful and interested in this than she was before going into the Live-Action Panel.

Her love for the "Sleeping Beauty" movie and dislike for anything Jolie had made her quite unhappy with this til we actually watched the trailer but now we're going to go see this in theater which is something since it takes us 45 minutes to get to one that actually plays movies in English.

Jolie was also quite kick-ass in those leather pants she was wearing too and it only took her 7 minutes of on stage to mention her united colors of Benetton ad that she calls a family.

@Minghagz, glad you agree. And when I mentioned Alan Moore, I was kind of referring to how flawed he tends to make his characters. Primary examples of this are in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen comics.
Mina Murray was happily married in the Dracula book, but when she's introduced in the League comic, she's gone through a scandalous divorce. Alan Quartermain was a competent guy in his book, but in League, he's introduced as a dopey drug addict. James Bond appears in the Black Dossier, and he is just NASTY! And in the last volume of the LXG comics, Harry Potter is turned into the Anti-Christ. I've got three words for you: WHAT! THE! HELL! Know what I mean?
