Here we have official confirmation of the titles of both of Peter Jackson's Hobbit installments, as well as release dates, cast lists etc. There is also a synopsis for the movies..

New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures and MGM have announced the titles and release dates for filmmaker Peter Jackson’s two-film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s enduringly popular masterpiece “The Hobbit.” The first film, titled The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, will be released on December 14, 2012. The second film, titled The Hobbit: There and Back Again, is slated for release the following year, on December 13, 2013.

Both films are set in Middle-earth 60 years before Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar-winning The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. The adventure of “The Hobbit” follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug.

Under Jackson’s direction, both movies are being shot consecutively in digital 3D using the latest camera and stereo technology. Filming is taking place at Stone Street Studios, Wellington, and on location around New Zealand.

Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, the character he played in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, and Martin Freeman, who just won a BAFTA TV Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the BBC series “Sherlock,” takes on the central role of Bilbo Baggins. Also reprising their roles from “The Lord of the Rings” movies are: Cate Blanchett as Galadriel; Orlando Bloom as Legolas; Ian Holm as the elder Bilbo; Christopher Lee as Saruman; Hugo Weaving as Elrond; Elijah Wood as Frodo; and Andy Serkis as Gollum. The ensemble cast also includes (in alphabetical order) Richard Armitage, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, Mike Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott, Jeffrey Thomas and Aidan Turner.

The screenplays for “The Hobbit” films are by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson. Jackson is also producing the films, together with Fran Walsh and Carolynne Cunningham. The executive producers are Ken Kamins and Zane Weiner, with Philippa Boyens serving as co-producer.

“The Hobbit” films are productions of New Line Cinema and MGM, with New Line managing production. Warner Bros Pictures is handling worldwide theatrical distribution, with select international territories as well as all international television licensing being handled by MGM.

The Hobbit - 2 films out of one slight book, predicated more upon description than action. Perhaps 2 cuts of each movie. 4 DVD's then 4 Blurays. Kerching! Jackson's theatrical cut of the 3rd LOTR movie was awful. He redeemed himself with the director's cut - at our expense. It's all about money now - milking the Tolkein fanbase. I have no interest in this anymore.

The titles are perfect if you've read the book. I just don't get why we have to get 2 movies for a 200 page novelette, where we only got one movie per 600 page epic novel?

Oh wow. I must have missed the news that Ian Holm was returning. Last I heard he wasn't going to be able to do it or some such. Good to hear he'll be back as well! Can't wait for these films, though it sucks that it's going to be a year and a half before even the first one! Oh well.

@Xenix Well I know "There and Back Again" is straight from the book itself... if you read it, it's called "'The Hobbit' or 'There and Back Again'". I'm not sure if the other title is or not, but I'm totally fine with both.

@BillyBatson1000 have you ever read the book? With the other three movies, they had to edit out alot of stuff in order to get them into one movie. What they're doing with The Hobbit, is, not editing stuff. The Hobbit is a great book, and I'm totally ok with two movies for it. And as for the director's cut editions milking the fanbase, that's just ridiculous haha. They're too long for theaters. I love the directors cuts, but they work far better watching them at home, where you can pause for food/restroom then they would in a theater

The Hobbit was 297 pages in hardcover and 320 in paperback. I have no challenge whatsoever in them making it into two films. I am glad they are doing so in order not to rush anything and develop the characters and chemistry between them.

BB1000@ Return of the Kings was awful. First fantasy movie ever to win Best Picture. Really awful!

Names are what I expected. Part 2's name is better than part one. I wish they could do one film with the running time two. I'd sit through it.

Can't wait for pictures !

Can't wait for trailers !

Can't wait for 2012 !

Can't wait for 2013 !

They are filming two movies because one is based on the hobbit book and the other is to bridge the gap between the hobbit and Fellowship.

@Intruder

I agree about the Star Wars prequels.

I think The Hobbit movies will be good, but I also think Peter Jackson > George Lucas.

The book The Hobbit was obviously written before LoTR, and does have a slightly different feel. While it's still a serious book, it's not all about an epic war like the LoTR movies. Instead it's about stealing treasure from a dragon. So obviously the movie will not be exactly like the LoTR movies plotwise, but then again, the book wasn't either. As long as it's a good movie though, that's all that matters.

Respectfully, take on board all your comments. Absolutely LOVE the first 2 films of the LOTR canon. Then it just seemed to go wrong. I just think that Return of the King should have stood on its own as a complete film (without the need/or fall back of a director's cut). In my opinion it didn't. How could you have an actor/character of Christopher Lee/Saruman's importance simply 'disappear off screen'? It was a massive flaw. The film also had too many 'false' endings and lost the Storming of the Shire completely. These points aside - you may not agree with me, I thought that the extended/director's cut DVD's broke in annoying places and spoilt the flow of the story. EG: The Council of Eldron in LOTR 1. Jackson seems to have lost his grasp of editing. 'King Kong' dragged on needlessly for a ridiculous amount of time and padded out characters who had NO baring on the plot. 'The Lovely Bones' captured none of the emotional depth of the original novel and reduced it to almost romantic fiction. Compare it with 'Heavenly Creatures' which was brilliant.

Excellent titles. Perfect first title and awesome final title. They made great usage of the content instead of making up some unrelated title. Can't wait. I'll be old by the time this comes out, but can't wait.

@Maia87 - damn man, the other guy above just said those are titles from chapters of the book!

Everyone who saw LoTR knows "There And Back Again" is the name of the Red Book of The Westmark (Bilbo's)!

What's wrong with you people? You complain more than my granny (when she was still alive)!

And for the haters, FVCK you! This series is just perfect. The man simply relived an ancient style of writing and telling stories. Tolkien rules and ALL of you owe him a lot because TONS of stuff you like would never exist if it wasn't for him. Starting with the fantasy genre.

This is going to be the most epic film of 2012. The production values will be through the roof. I'm glad Jackson is in the directors chair. Let Del Toro do Army of Darkness or something, not Middle Earth.

The Hobbit: An unexpected Journey
The Dark Knight Rises
Marvel Studios: The Avengers

Nothing else matters.
