RUMOR: Director David Yates Possibly Attached to Fables

The Harry Potter director is now rumored to a live-action adaptation of Bill Willingham’s popular Fables comic series.

It's been awhile since any word about the tentative Fables TV series has circulated. The last evidence that the property was still being considered for a live-action treatment was when the ABC network announced it's plans for an adaptation; but that was several years ago. Today, Pajiba.com (via Collider) has released this statement linking director David Yates to the fantasy series:

"[We've] been given fairly convincing evidence to definitively suggest that David Yates is, at least, in the mix and that a Fables movie is, at the very least, in the early stages of development, so it’s not a rumor that should be quickly dismissed...However, though the project is apparently a priority over at Warner Brothers, there’s not a writer on board yet and the potential ABC mini-series based on the graphic novel series may present either a conflict or a launching point, which assumes that ABC’s television series is going ahead. That’s not information I have available, although if DC Comics and Warner Brothers are developing a film, common sense would suggest that the series is all but dead. Best I can tell, there’s been little or no movement on the series since it was announced a year and a half ago."

Bill Willingham’s award winning Fables series follows the story of many popular fairy tale characters, such as the Big Bad Wolf, Snow White, Boy Blue, Cinderella and the Frog Prince, who are chased out of their realms (dubbed the Homelands) when an evil force called the Adversary declares war. The characters, both human and animal based, find sanctuary in our world and build a community in New York.

David Yates, who has helmed four of the Harry Potter films, has recently been linked to take over directing Peter Jackson's two-part prequel The Hobbit, since Guillermo Del Toro officially stepped down. No work yet from Warner Bros whether there is validity to this new rumor; but Fables fans should at least be happy to hear the series may not be ignored for much longer.

Hope they don't screw this up.

The only thing Keanu Reeves should be attached to is a large metal object heading for the ocean floor.

i confirm @BillyBlack 's comment!!!

@MPP agreed! neil gaiman is god! and like the sandman books, fables would have to be whittled down too much to make a movie. there was apparently a failed attempt by NBC in 2006-7 to do a series based on Fables and then in 2008 by ABC. it would definitely make a great show if done right. but i agree that a film would be cool, but not right for fables.

Fables is a hard story to tell, I think it would do better as an animated series....a lot of low budget CGI would make it come across as a cheap SCI FI Channel movie

I'm a Fables addict! I'm afraid a movie would leave too much out. Television is the medium I'd choose if the budget was big enough. I'm with Poni here, Showtime or HBO would be the way to go. Cool article!

Fables is a consistently great and well-written series. Sorry Multi, but love me some Sandman a little bit more. Vertigo is just an awesome imprint. I'd go for a mini-series I'd love to see stuff from 1001 Nights of Snowfall as flashbacks to provide backstory.

THIS IS F***ING AWESOME. I think, as some have said, that an ongoing TV series on Showtime/Starz/Cinemax would be best.

IF YOU HAVE NOT READ FABLES, YOU ARE MISSING OUT.

Woohoo!!! They better not screw this up. Fables is a rich, complex story that is suited better to the TV format because of the long storylines involved. My only concern is the budget. This is a huge opportunity. It could also be a gigantic flop. Let's hope not though.

And yes, Keanu Reeves + large metal object + ocean = fan-freaking-tastic.

Sick, this is in my top three favorite series. I just finished reading up to the eleventh graphic novel. It's gonna be tough to make into a single movie, or even two or three for that matter. Wonder who could play the characters...

all over this like a rash...but HBO or Showtime needs to do it, abc would make it too family or childish and it would ruin the feel that makes it great

I think Connelly and Crowe might be a little old for ageless characters of folklore, but I could definitely see them pulling off the roles. That's an interesting choice for Rose Red, but it does seem like a pretty good one.

I've never read Fables, but it sounds very interesting. I have always loved re-imagined tales of some of my favourite myths/legends/and fables (thats probably why I loved DC's Elseworlds comics so much :D). Maybe I'll get a few of the novels for my birthday (2 weeks away XD).

I love Fables.. It's too complex of a story to make a movie of it. It needs to be a weekly show on HBO or Showtime...

@Isaiah. I concur. But I'd still love to see it in a movie. As much as I hate saying it. They should change it up a little bit. Have the first one be the homelands being invaded and everyone doing their thing, and than moving to fabletown. The second one just where most of the story takes place, in fabletown and add most of the important stuff happening and obviously them getting ready for the war, and the third one is them focusing on the war. I know, a lot of awesome little things would get left out. But, if they stayed to the basic points of the novels. I'd be happy.

But late to the convo, but just want to echo what Leee and others have said. This is one of the best comics series around.

I'd prefer a series than a movie though. There'd be too much compression and cutting in a movie imo.
