Perhaps one of the most anticipated aspects of G.I. Joe: Retaliation is the big screen debut of fan favourite villain Firefly. Enlisted by Cobra to break Cobra Commander out of jail, he plays a pivotal role in the sequel, and director John M. Chu had this to say about why he wanted to include character. "Firefly sees beauty in the redistribution of energy, so while explosions may seem like destruction to us, he believes he is creating something. This almost artistic philosophy made Firefly really interesting to me and it went way beyond being merely a cold-hearted killer." According to producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Firefly "only had about six lines when we first read the script," but they soon realised that they had to give him a much larger role in the movie. Who better to play him than Dexter and Thor star Ray Stevenson?

"Ray really built this character from the ground up and gave him this southern swagger and lingo all his own," adds Chu. " He was interested in all the details from the type of skin on his leather jacket and the Cobra ring that he wears, to his facial scarring. He had a huge amount of input on who Firefly became." While he may have got all of the characteristics right, the biggest challenge for the British actor was posing a believable threat to Dwayne Johnson's Roadblock. "When it came to finding a nemesis for my character, it was important to find an opponent who could conceivably beat me and that’s not an easy thing to do," laughed Johnson. Stevenson adds, "Pitting these two is great and the fights have been so intense that you felt the walls shake when they hit each other. One thing about fighting with Dwayne is that when he blocks a punch it’s like hitting an iron bar. The man is literally made of rock. You don’t walk away from that unscathed and I certainly had my fair share of cuts and bruises."

Ray is a cool dude..his character on HBO show ROME was great, his Punisher was top-notch (film was weak) & Firefly is badass.
He needed more screen time in Thor,maybe he will in the sequels.

Thoughts this morning:

Ray is more of a threat to the Rock than John Cena.
Look for Cena's long, long overdue heel turn at Wrestlemania (he's too old to continue as a face; all of the kid fans have grown older and are over it).

@sameoldthing is right.

I'm confident that I will not feel compelled to see the Wolverine film in the theater.

Finally, as of this morning's news (US side), I can only conclude that Dennis Rodman has issued an ultimatum to the great leader president of North Korea: Rodman will no longer fund Kim's private McDonalds or provide any additional drugs unless Kim promises to aim missiles at the United States.

Ray Stevenson = best Punisher. I want him as Frank Castle again, I thought he knocked it out of the park in War Zone.

Not a CBM but 'Kill the Irishman' was absolute genius, Ray Stevenson needs to get more recognition.

Honestly, I'm not a fan of Ray Stevenson. Thor and Book of Eli are the only two I can think of where he didn't annoy the hell out of me.

Ray Stevenson would make a good Cable, provided he trains for about six months and gets huge and ripped.

Ray is awesome and definitely needs to return as Punisher.
War Zone had the right style it just needed better script and director.

Ray as Cable could be cool.

Ray is awesome but although he looked cool as Firefly, the character was portrayed terribly. His accent and the dialog were absolutely absurd. Retaliation as a whole was awful and I say that as a G.I.Joe fan as well as a level headed movie watcher. It was BAD!

totally agree with xfactorz. I like Ray, but he missed the mark with Firefly. No need for a southern accent at all (which wasn't done well). Also as they stated in the article, they wanted someone that would be "believable" to hold their own against Rock? They missed the mark cause Ray is no threat to the man. It's a shame because in the comics Firefly is actually a ninja himself and a hidden master within Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow's Arashikage ninja clan. Wish that would have been in the film.....
