Marc Guggenheim Explains The Decision Not To Use SMALLVILLE's Justin Hartley In ARROW

Considering the fact that he was liked by most fans, why wasn't Smallville's Justin Hartley asked to reprise his role in new CW show, Arrow? Producer Marc Guggenheim explains that and the decision to tell Oliver Queen's origin story over the course of the entire first season.

Considering the fact that Arrow isn't a Smallville spin-off, it shouldn't really come as too much of a surprise that Justin Hartley wasn't asked to return as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow in the new CW series. "We certainly wanted to chart our own course and destiny," producer Marc Guggenheim explained to reporters at the Television Critics Association's press tour yesterday (via Entertainment Weekly). "Justin is a terrific Arrow. Michael Keaton [as Batman] doesn’t affect your love for Christian Bale and Christian Bale doesn’t affect your love for Adam West...multiple iterations are possible."

The series is also set to be a lot darker than Smallville with Guggenheim confirming that this particular iteration of Green Arrow won't be afraid to dish out some pretty extreme forms of justice when required. "The Arrow always gives the bad guy the opportunity to do the right thing...when he kills, he kills for necessity...it’s not just random violence...we’ll face the issues of his morality head on...that’s part of the fun quite, frankly, when telling a story about a vigilante." Surprisingly, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg let slip a particularly interesting piece of information about the structure of the first season. "The last episode of the series will be [Arrow] seeing the [rescue] boat in the pilot. Every week is telling the origin story."

Are you looking forward to seeing "The Arrow" in the show this Fall? Would you have been happier seeing Justin Hartley in the title role instead of Stephen Amell? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place and stay tuned for more details as we near the premiere of Arrow on October, 10th.

I like how they are taking cues from the entirety of Green Arrow's history from the Denny O'Neil social activism years when he was partnered with Hal Jordan to the more brutal feel from the Longbow Hunters.

Smallville was brilliant. Shame they didn't keep the old Arrow since the new one looks pretty bad.

Good reasoning for not using Hartley, basically this is a reboot of GA. Let's see if the show progresses to the point where they can use him in a unified movie universe with other DC/WB heroes.

I can see this show lasting five seasons.
They should just put batman in this show and spin him off into his own tv series. Give the movies a break for a while. But only if it is good.

Arrow enthusiasts: a new actor is a good idea. I'll check it out.

smallville had its good moments, but it mostly was overly dramatic soap opera stories. The acting in several eps were ATROCIOUS!

Smallville probably wasn't a fan favorite to comic book fans but it did have lots of fans, I was a huge fan even though I knew this shit did not follow the comics, I still loved it. Also, what superhero show that you know is live-action that made 10 seasons?

Smallville is a fun show, I admit first 3 seasons are a little lame but the show does get increasingly better, some episodes are meh (especially Season 7 and 8) but there is a lot of great moments in Smallville that stand out.

Yea Ok i was a fan of Smallville for like the first 3 season. Then it started to go downhill and lasted to long. Also reason it went on so long was not because it had a lot of fans. It because it was on the CW the last five years it was on and they did not have anything else. It rating after season 3 stated going down hill. The show got really bad and the only good actor on their was Michel,John Glover, John Schneider, and O'Toole. That it. Erica and Chloe where annoying as hell and Lana dont get me started at her. It the worse case of Character sabotage I ever seen.

It was fun at first. You think the first 3 season are lame but at least it was still on the shark after that it jump off the shark the swam under it and the went into it mouth and then out it ass.

Why does it always have to turn into a Smallville discussion?

Look, regardless if it was a good show or not (in your opinions), there's a reason why the show went 10 seasons. There aren't too many shows out there who make it even close to that number. Like it or not the show was popular for a reason.

As much as I liked Justin Hartley in Smallville I think the new guy looks a lot more like Oliver Queen. Hartley was too boyish looking when this new guy look more tough.

Smallville had some great moments and then it had some not so great ones (Doomsday). Itr had more good than bad though. I am very excited for this show especiallyu since Deathstroke will be in it.

What he said makes sense in theory but you don't reset a charecter that soon there has been a big gap between the 90's Batman movies and the Nolan movies. Instead of doing this CW should have tried to get a Wonder Woman and Gotham City show on TV to continue as spinoffs of Smallville.

Yea as i stated before sir. It was only popular in it first 3 season, season 2 being the most. But it only lasted cause it was on the CW. Yes it got 10 season and that I give it props. But to me it hurt it to. The story telling was horrible and the plot holes got as big as Texas. That just my opinion and also from what insiders have said and also Nelsions Ratings.

For the love of [frick] why the hell does this turn into bash Smallville? I have read Superman since childhood and I loved Smallville. It had it's ups and downs but I loved seeing new things. Don't let your opinion of the show suddenly turn into "I think the actors sucked". That's your opinion, I felt that the actors were wonderful. I hate the whole superior "true fan" attitude that some people have just because they hate something, lots of long time Superman fans liked Smallville, doesn't make their opinion any less valid.
--------------------------------------------------------
Ok i see your point. But how can you actually say that. Any true Superman fan did not like that show. That because it was not a Superman show. Not once did Tom Welling actually don the suit. Not once. How can you not see that as a slap in the face. Also why did they bring in Doomsday and Darksied for. That was a bad idea. Look i admit it had it moments. But as a whole it was lazy writing and I think that made the actors look bad. So I not going to blame the actors. I blame the writers for making them look bad.

Wise choice. For all its unarguable popularity, Smallville also has its many detractors (me included). Associating this series with Smallville would have been counter-productive, so making it clear that it's distinctly its own thing by re-casting is a good choice.

I think they still need to clear the Smallville hurdle though and establish even more clearly that its not related - in that some people will think it a spin-off regardless.

Being actually good will help...
