Green Hornet Director Michel Gondry Describes "Kato Vision"

Indie director Michel Gondry discusses making "hyper but not pretentious" action sequences in his first big movie, The Green Hornet, and describes "Kato Vision"!

Director Michel Gondry is primarily known for his movies Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Be Kind Rewind, so he may seem an unusual choice to direct the superhero movie The Green Hornet. But The Green Hornet was actually one of the first projects he ever worked on in Hollywood, way back in 1997 when the movie was being developed by Universal.

Gondry brings his unique vision to a genre that he feels is too "sleek" and has too much "attitude" in many ways, but one technique that is sure to stand out is "Kato Vision," his process of showing a fight scene in split screen, with the action being shown at different speeds. Gondry described the process during an interview with JoBlo:

"Well I was trying to find a way to enhance the fight and use a technique that has not been used before. So basically we shoot at a higher rate. We shoot with one camera and then we separate and sometimes one guy is going faster and the other guy's going slower and then the guy who gets slower gets faster and etc. It’s sort of like you buy a time from the future and then you have to reimburse it. So what it does is it really makes the transfer of energy when somebody hits somebody else so the guy who hits the next guy goes very fast and then the guy when he receives the hit he goes faster. It’s like if I hit you.. BAM! First, you're slow and I’m fast and then when I hit you I become slow and you become fast so I can give you my energy. I can transfer like electricity in some ways. And all that with the camera moving, which makes it quite hard to shoot but it is pretty spectacular."

The technique has been dubbed "Kato Vision" because it is primarily used by the Green Hornet's (Seth Rogen) partner, Kato (Jay Chou), but Gondry said that the Green Hornet will also get to use it as his skills improve.

The Green Hornet opens January 14, 2011!

I have no idea what the guy just said. Guess I'll wait to see it in motion.

Dynamo - you're SERIOUSLY going to pay money to see this in a theater?! Why not wait until it hits cable? You KNOW this is going to be an assinine adaptation! And for those who say that this film is just paying homage to the 60's cult-classic, I say you're not fans and are getting your TV series confused - 'Batman' was a campy POS, 'Green Hornet' was a serious attempt at superhero drama! This move WILL blow, mark my words people!

Loganoneil, I think this movie will actually be very good and surprise a lot of naysayers like yourself.

I agree with Dynamo, I have no idea what Gondry is talking about ha! But I think it might mean some awesome action.

The way he talks kind of reminds me of "The Kick" from Enter the Dragon. Except Bruce Lee needs no special effects, of course. Does anybody else know what I'm talking about?

@loganoneil- The show is just one aspect of Green Hornet's history. I've seen a couple episodes of it when I was a kid, it was pretty awesome (gotta love Bruce Lee) and it definitely tried to be more serious than Batman, but I also listened to the radio show and read the NOW comics. Have YOU experienced the character in all of these mediums? Because if you haven't, I say YOU'RE not a fan. All of those versions were all slightly different. And that's all this is. A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT version. Michel Gondry even said it's not completely camp. I agree with Stumblin and feel like this movie is going to surprise a lot of people.

@tea- nutkicking never gets old! :)

mmm... I hope this is not just the same we saw in Sherlock Holmes.

I'm tired of the over-used-slow-mo-shit

c'mon! Studios got enough money to invest in something original and interesting, not just doing the same thing again and again and calling it Kato Vision...

Matches - Yes, I have listened to the radio show (I thought Jack McCarthy's version the best!). But with all the varations out there, the one common thread is that GH was a SERIOUS character. You say, "Michel Gondry even said it's not completely camp" - '...not COMPLETELY camp...' meaning there's still some campy aspects to it! Based on what I've seen and read, Rogen's interpretation seems nothing more than a dopey rich kid running around and acting stupid while Chou's Kato does all the work! THAT'S not the Green Hornet I remember and grew up with! I guess only time will tell if this movie is a surprise sleeper hit, but I'm not going to be holding my breath. In fact, I'm more than willing to bet against it - any takers?

Kato Vision sounds like DUNE Vision.

Spock - If you're referring to the EXCELLENT mini-series (and not that POS movie), then I TOTALLY agree! It sounds EXACTLY like the type of filming done in 'Dune'! "...use a technique that has not been used before...", my @ss!

@loganoneil- It just doesn't seem to me that there is going to be that much more humor in this than, say, Iron Man. I think it was RorMachine who said on another Green Hornet article that they always show the funny shit in trailers to reel in the casual fans. I guess that's what I meant about the "camp" comment. I would imagine with Christoph Waltz as the villian, being that he is a pretty grounded and serious actor, that there will definitely be some humor in it because of the presence of Rogen, but mostly it will take itself fairly seriously. But, if your already hating it before you see it, I guess your mind is made up. I'm gonna see it, so, if it sucks, I'll be the first one to concede to you. :)

Matches - I'll be the FIRST to admit, I have more-than-just-a-little problem with Seth Rogen in the role. He's (by ANY stretch of the imaginiation) no Britt Reid! In my opinion, the man couldn't act his way out of a paper bag and should be considered the Will Ferrell of the 21st century - stupid and insipid! I have read or seen NOTHING that even remotely sparks the slightest interest in this film (and I'm a GH fan!). I await to read your review to see if I'm wrong or not...

@logan- I admit he wouldn't have been my first choice either, but I have faith in Gondry. Hopefully he'll have reined in some of Rogen's goofiness. I am a Seth Rogen fan, so I might be a little biased, but I can see why people don't like him. I do think he showed an understated sweetness in some scenes in Knocked Up, which possibly could be a precursor to a range we haven't seen yet. I'm keeping hope alive, buddy! I could very well be delusional though. :)

Being a GH fan, I REALLY hope your right! I'd hate to see Reid and Kato join the list of superhero characters that suffered box office deaths because their movies sucked!

i'll catch the matinee when it comes out. i dig'in the current comic series that they transitioned from Kevin Smith's old Script.

still think it would'ove been cool if Brandon Lee played kato.

but he died.
