Green Lantern to be Released in 3D

Green Lantern to be Released in 3D

Warner Bros. confirms what was once only speculated by the film's director, Green Lantern will receive the 3D treatment.

A few weeks back, Green Lantern director Martin Campbell was asked about the possibility the film would receive the 3D treatment; to which he simply said, “[Warner Bros. and I] haven’t really talked about it.”

Apparently the issue has finally come up at the studio level. According to Warner Brothers, the decision to debut the intergalactic adventure in 3D format has been 'green' lit.

The favorable decision came through in the nick of time. The film, which is scheduled for a June 17, 2011 release, begins principal photography this month. Now the option to actually shoot the project (or aspects of) in 3D format is available to the production crew; instead of solely relying on working it into post. Nothing has changed with the film's original release information; meaning it will still be available to watch in standard 2D format.

There is no word yet whether the film's budget will allow for it to utilize the high-end technology that helped James Cameron's Avatar reach box office gold.

MPP - I've said it before and I'll say it again, Green Lantern is one of the very few CBMs that would definitely benefit from the 3D treatment; granted the studio spends the coin for the best tech available (Piranha:3D anyone?).

I can absolutely picture a major GL battle with all the constructs having depth with 3D!

Well to each's own but i've also said it before and i'll say it again; I'm not on board the 3D train. It better serves straight up animation. The begining will look pretty cool until the fast moving objects will appear fuzzy and then the 3D aspect will just dissapear half way into the movie to make it look like we're watching a regular 2D movie. I'll be watching the regular one ;)

3D is great, why do all you pin-heads hate it? Today's 3D technology is awesome and allows a great immersive quality to films, allowing us to truly let go and get into the movie, for an even better movie-going experience.

3D all the way!!!!

Bring on the 3D!!!

I think this is one of the few movies where 3D would serve it well especially if they shoot it in stereoscopic 3D from the start. Converting it later wouldn't do it justice.

When do we get to the point of donning fully encased helmets with an interactive body suit for the full 4D experience?

I agree GREEN LANTERN is one of the few movie that would totally be awesome in 3D!!!

Agreed. Its to no loss to anyone to skip the 3D experience and catch it in the conventional format. Let the market decide! If 3D truly does suck, it'll return to obscurity. Yet if it has finally arrived to superior quality (which I think it has), then it will remain and we'll wear the "fully encased helmets with an interactive body suit for the full 4D experience"

I'm with Sparkles on this one! That it would "...definitely benefit from the 3D treatment".
But I also think a majority of CBMs would fare well by it. Providing that it isn't done with an emphasis on a 3D money shot with a propelled object coming out of the screen in an unusually manufactured and packaged faux way.

ItsNotASchooner- "3D is great, why do all you pin-heads hate it?"

Can you read my [frick]ing comment??? I didn't switch my keyboard language to elven, did i???

Phinehas- If they always release the original 2D along with the 3D, than i'm all for it. But the last thing i want happening is to miss out on great films because they'll become available only in 3D. That would suck ass. I can't wait to see the next step in 3D improvement. Cause where they're at, doesn't impress me one bit. Avatar single handedly made me hate 3D.

@Shaman

I did read it, but I mean, did you see either Up or Avatar in 3D? The technology is here. In neither did I see fuzziness or not notice the depth of the picture. This new 3D isn't about having crap fly out of the screen at you, but to bring depth into the picture, as if you're looking through a window.

Personally, every time I see a movie being announced in 3D I get excited. I just hope more of them use the 3D tech that Cameron developed and not just do it after the fact in post.

Schooner out!

Yeah, I saw something recently that reminded me to go back and read from that Beyonce article (which could still hold the record for the most commented thread with Myth's memorial a close second)
It was wicked-funny. I was laughing so hard yesterday I was crying. In the process, I saw that refered to you as Sparkles and was wondering why I ceased from that endearment. It was pretty class.

3D: thumbs-up. 3D haters: don't care. Green Lantern in 3D: what movies were meant to be. Avatar in 3D: loved it - pure magic.

I think Whollyweird has learned its lesson with exclusivism. In the past, when films were released in 3D only (like Jaws 3 in 3D) they didn't fare as well. Recent films that have been released in 3D were also released in a conventional 2D format.

Avatar
A Christmas Carol
Clash of the Titans etc...

So it comes down to a place where its personal choice. I think its good, and you, bad. Choice is awesome, isn't it? We both win in the end.

to everyone who hates 3d they will probably start giving every movie 3d treatment to avoid pirating. you can't pirate a 3d movie so that will give the movies more money in the box office

But, I kind of do agree, this is one CBM where 3D could actually work. But I probably won't see it in that format, but hopefully it comes out in regular IMAX as well. No way am I going to miss out on GL in IMAX.

Phine- Choice is definitely Win-Win :))

ItsNotASchooner- I find it funny that you say you read my comment and then ask me if i saw Avatar in 3D LOLOL.

Avatar was actually my first and only theater 3D experience. IT made me hate it... all by itself LOL. Now someone had told me that the 3D is better in an IMAX which i didn't see. Could be true... then again, i didn't want to pay for my ticket to see avatar in the first place so i sure as hell wasn't gonna fork up 30$ to see it in IMAX.

InFamouslyCool- HOLY SHIT DUDE!!!! THAT IS AWESOME :))

I'm not a big fan of 3-D but I'm not against it either. It could work for this movie but I don't think its required at all.

ALL: I have been trying to embed a video in an article for a while. Everything I try fails. I copy the embed code and paste but it doesn't come through. Is there a trick I'm missing? Anyone? I have not had this trouble before.

it make sense to have Green Lantern be done in 3D only if they shoot the movie in 3D.

Finally a film that actually should be in 3D rather than this films which are just made 3D last minute just because Avatar did it they think their film should. I'm pro-3D for The Green Lantern film. :)

@Hawks-Is it youtube or some other video site? Some don't give you an embed code or don't make it clear between the url or embed code. Also make sure you copy the whole thing. It is a fairly lengthy piece of code.

@Oscuro-Isn't this the main purpose of the comments? To voice your opinion on the article which is about 3D.
