UPDATE: Well guys, it seems that this is NOT the concept art for the movie after all. Alex Ross himself confirmed that. You can read his message below:

"It was brought to my attention that you had posted art Sal must have provided you of some Green Lantern work I did for DC. I assume the article isn’t going to stay up there very long, but since the body copy wasn’t run past me, it’s really incorrect, because I made no proposals for the development of the movie and all the work I was commissioned to do was never considered “concept art.” Maybe I’m being too particular in wanting to get the facts straight, but they never approached me for design consideration. This stuff was just standard comic-style art to be used in potential commercial product application, like any other style guide artist is commissioned to do. There was talk about it relating to the movie, but mostly by the timing of its release. I’d appreciate it if you could fix the body copy, as well as the headline. I really don’t want fans to think that I “pitched” a version of what could’ve been done in the movie, and that’s what this is presented as."

Comic Book Resources has an exclusive first look at the early concept art for Warner Bros. & Martin Campbell's comic book adaptation Green Lantern that was made by acclaimed artist Alex Ross. Ross is known for making very faithful designs and this concept art is no different. Featuring the Green Lantern Corps, Hal Jordan and more, check it out below.

Green Lantern is playing mostly everywhere now!

He's probably the only artist who brings back that old fashioned superhero vibe with style, love his work.

I'm not a big fan of his work. I'm not saying it isn't great, but I just don't see the big hype of it.

I've never benn one to jump on the internet bandwagon of bitchin' and moaning, nothing's ever good enough, spoilt brat nonsense.
But I've always hated Alex Ross.
The most overrated man in comics of the last 20 years. I loved Marvels and Kingdom Come was okay, but that was mostly because of Busiek. The novelty of Alex Ross doing old-skool comics designs as realistic paintings wore off SO long ago. He's not even that good at what he does. You could get a computer program to do his job. He probably does.

Love his work. He always create the most iconic depictions ever made. Love it! Maybe somewhat hyped but I LOVE IT!

I love Ross' work, I can understand if someone doesn't like his style but to just say his style "wore off" like it's a trend is just silly.

And to say that you can do that type of painting on Photoshop, sure can, just like any other hand drawn art form can be done on Photoshop. So does that mean all artists suck DuckAcureds? By your standards it does.

By the way, Ross works with water color and air brush with his work.

@Stumblin
No, I'm just saying that Alex Ross has nothing else to his work. There's nothing artistic there. He's very skilled, but not really talented. Real art can not be done by a monkey with a computer program. Okay, so he likes to paint and he's accurate. He's technically very good, but it all seems a bit mechanical and soulless. He's not exactly DeVinci, now, is he?

@DukeAcureds
In fairness, he brings more realism to his art than most artists can achieve.
You can call that soulless if you want but most would say it's the very core of what's unique about his work, the fact he makes it look more life-like and genuine.

@DukeAcureds You sir, are an idiot. To say there's nothing artistic there is completely asinine. Can you paint like that? My guess is you can barely draw a stick figure. "real art cannot be done by a monkey with a computer program" now you really sound like an idiot. You do realize that almost all comic art is digitally colored right? you [frick]ing jackass. I'm an artist, and graphic designer, and i went to art school, and guess what they taught us there aside from painting and drawing? they taught us photoshop you jackass! there isnt some photoshop filter that turns a stick figure into an alex ross painting. The computer is a tool, not an easy way out. it takes alot of practice, experimentation, and knowledge to master those programs. And to say he's not da vinci makes you look like a smacked ass. No one is like Da vinci, thats why he's [frick]ing da vinci. Damn your dumb.
DukeAcureds
DukeAcureds - 7/20/2011, 9:05 AM
ZeroEthic@ There's really been no call for accurate realism in paintings since the invention of the photographic camera.
Can anyone tell me what it is about his art that you actually like? Because if the only reason you like him is because of his style, you'll probably get over it.
Ethic
Ethic - 7/20/2011, 9:06 AM
@kevberg
Exactly.
Most artists work looks 2D as it's drawn that way,
Ross's work is done 2D but has a stronger perception of depth so it looks more like photography.

I can understand you not liking Alex Ross's work, but to insult his artistic skill is just plain wrong. He's one of the most talented artist around, and is clearly going for the "Norman Rockwell" approach to comic art. A style that is unique to the medium and definitely not easy to duplicate by computer. Have some respect for the art.

Apologies for my ignorance on computer programs, I realize it is also an artform. But you really are mistaking skill for talent. Matches, if you can't understand what I'm talking about, then you paid no attention in art school or were on a bad course. I'm talking about art. Alex Ross IS skilled. But it is all style over substance.
A camera can do his job. With more soul.

@DukeAcureds

For one if you were to compare him it would not be to Da Vinci but rather Normal Rockwell, . Number two he is both skilled and talented. He uses a water color like system called gouache. Very hard medium to master like kevberg stated and also hard to control. If you notice his shots are always tight and clean.

You don't have to like him, but to call him not talented is just plain ignorant and displays a lack of understanding, not even a rudimentary one, when it comes to more traditional forms of art.

And yes, I am an Alex Ross fan, love his style, met him a couple of times and he is a really nice guy.

i'm a TRUE Ross fan...but, i do wanna see him doing something more current, like the DC heroes painting he did in the 90's, with a long-haired Supes, bearded and hook-handed Aquaman, Kyle as the GL and also featured Steel...now THAT i wanna see more.

like with this upcoming dc relaunch..all the new look updates...i wanna see Ross' take on some, if not all, of the characters.

ps: i heard rumors..Ross's having trouble with his eyesight? i hope that's soooo not true. keep on doin yo thing, Alex...u da man.

Stumblin
Stumblin - 7/20/2011, 9:15 AM
DukeAcureds, oooh OK that makes more sense then. I can see what you mean. I like him as a cover artist but not a story teller because he's limited by his models' poses. You can't compare him to da Vinci though, two entirely different types of artists. Da Vinci helped move along the freakin' Renaissance, Alex Ross paints pictures for comic books, not really apples to apples if you know what I mean.

Photo realism always has a place, it adds something that cameras don't. Personality, the artist hardly ever draws exactly what they see but add and take out what they feel for their desired effect. You mean to tell me Chuck Close has no purpose with his art? Only Surrealism, Cubism, Impressionism, Expressionism ect. have a place in the art world? That makes no sense at all.

Like I said not like his realism I totally get, but I'd have some respect for his skills.

And I disagree about art cannot be done on a computer. It very much can, look up pretty much any concept art for a movie (besides this obviously) I betcha it's done on a computer with a tablet and stylus.

I just commented and it didn't even appear here uh, [frick]in thing.

"A camera can do his job. With more soul."

And most artists couldn't dream of catching the realism and perception of depth of photography in a drawing.
Ross can.
Stumblin
Stumblin - 7/20/2011, 9:17 AM
If you don't like photorealism, that's cool, to say it has no purpose is again, silly. That's like saying claymation has no purpose because of 3D animation or live action film. Or that 2D animation has no purpose because we have CGI animation.

@Bladerogers "tight and clean" true.
I'm still not hearing any true criticism of his art. Only of his craft. Two very different things. He is good at his craft. Maybe the best, in his field.
Neal Adams was photo-realistic, but evocative.
Kelley Jones is the complete opposite of photo-realistic. His drawings are hideously wrong. But they are incredibly soulful.

@DukeAcureds - I like Ross's work, but i dont have a boner over it, it's ok, sometimes its great, sometimes I'm not impressed, but to say it's not art is ridiculous. Most comic art is style over substance, considering the substance is superhero's. What were you expecting from comic book art? This isn't a norman rockwell painting, or a rembrandt, its [frick]ing green lantern. Jim lee is style over substance, what's your point? Comic art is style, the writer provides the substance. And a camera cannot do his job, do you have a camera that takes pictures that look like that? Is that something I can pick up at Best Buy? Cuz if so I definitely want one. Your argument comes off as ignorant, jus say you don't like his work, that is all, to say it's not art is insulting to people who make art.
