EDITORIAL: The Collector

I'm a huge fan of Marvel's cosmic stuff, I know the lore inside and out. Since the Collector featured in the Thor: The Dark World mid-credit stinger, people have been making all these assumptions as to his role and what he'll do. Click on to see what people have been coming up with and why it's wrong...

Like I said, I'm a huge cosmic Marvel fan and I realise it's probably the company's least popular area due to the content, yaddah yaddah. Anyway, I want to talk about The Collector in Thor: The Dark World. He appears in the mid-credit stinger and is handed the Aether (Power Gem) by Sif. After Sif and Volstagg leave he utters, "One down... Five to go." Now, people (and I mean nerds like us, not the GA) have taken that completely wrong. Why? I'll tell you why!

"I think he's working for Thanos."

Incorrect, because The Collector hates Thanos in the comics and without Thanos, The Collector wouldn't collect. Collector once had a vision of the universe's destruction. In the vision, he saw Thanos use the Infinity Gauntlet to destroy the universe. In anticipation of this, Collector started gathering samples of life, architecture, art, weaponry and many other things. Amongst this stuff, he'd gather artefacts of immense power. He hoped that collecting and preserving these things would at least postpone Thanos' destruction of the universe. The Collector. Hates. Thanos. Plain and simple, he hates him. If Marvel had them work together, I'd see that as a bigger character bastardisation than the Mandarin, they'd need to alter the character's entire backstory and purpose for collecting, and that doesn't sit well with me. Comparing it to Mandarin is fair enough. Mandarin was never in affiliation with Tony in the past (which he was in IM3), he never had a leadership role within AIM, he did not possess ten rings of power (morseo the terrorist organisation was a metaphor for the rings themselves) and he was never a white man. Back to the Collector, I just think he'd be better off unaltered. The character deserves to be portrayed correctly as he is about as perfect as could be.

I love the character and his hatred of Thanos is a driving characteristic as it can also make it a possibility for him to be a cause for good. The idea of him and Thanos working together genuinely sickens me. I'll probably get hate for this, and I'm willing to take it because I have a serious passion for the characters of the cosmic Marvel Universe and I figure people should learn about the characters before they go off on a theory spree.

Very interesting Nova!!!

However, I am not sure that Marvel will go with this line. Unfortunately it may be too confusing for the GA (or require a lot of time to explain/develop).

Why did they bring the either to him? Who told them to? How did they know to bring it? Odin..isnt himself so who told them to bring it to him amd how did they even know about him? Thats a plot hole but a bothersome one. All I can come up with is the Collector sent a messanger to asgard.

The Collector is an elder of the universe, everybody would know who he was.

I agree with what you're saying, but I'm not sure about how camp Gunn is trying to make him. I've always saw The Collector as slightly eccentric, not camp... I can't be the only one who thinks this?

I'd say he was acting camp to throw yhe Asgardians off his scent.

Good write up as usual Nova.

I think with Gunn saying that Collector is "a space liberachi" at the premier for TDW explains his mannerisms and everything. Very Fifth Element vibe to me. I agree with you tho Nova, I think in GotG, Collector may be shown as an ambiguous figure. I mean they can run into problems when he starts collecting heroes or they can see him as harmless since he wants to preserve things to rebuild after the world is destroyed. I doubt they have him working for Thanos tho. If they do, it has to be a VERY good reason.

I agree. The Collector hates Thanos. The collector will end up doing
All the hard work for Thanos though. Thanos will wait until the collector
Has all the stones then kill him an take them. He will still need the gauntlet,
Which is still in Asgard.

Quite frankly, I don't care, as long as they end up with a good story. Although, to be honest, I kind of hope they do have this Collector work with Thanos just to see fanboys' heads explode in rage, lol.

the real question is... if he is working for Thanos, will you be but hurt like MOST of CBM was about the Manderian's portrayal in IM3?

Oh the collector is a surprise character. Thanks. Didn't know that. But there it is, right in the title, for a movie that hasn't even got past its first weekend run. Again, thanks. I mean as a HUGE Thor fan i've done great avoiding all the spoilers till I could get the money and time to go see it but now I don't have to. Maybe I could leave my email address and people could just tell me all the other surprises in the movie. :(

My sarcasm meter is now full for the day till I must awake and feed again.

I think he will be portrayed as non super powered. I have no evidence but I definitely didn't get a sense of power from him. He just seemed like a weird and dirty guy who collects stuff in the back room of a night club. And Marvel have a habit of massively or completely depowering their characters for the movies. Just look at Odin. or Thor.

I liked benecio doin his thing. The scene was pretty out there and weird to me, but I liked it nonetheless. Great article too man I agree with your points. Like I read somewhere else, I think Thanos will strike at the collector when he has at least 5 out of 6 gems if not all of them.

The collector is stronger than Thanos tho.
GammerDad
GammerDad - 11/9/2013, 9:09 PM
Hopefully Collector stays true to the books, there really is no need to adjust for the mainstream, Thanos takes him out as he gets closer to gathering all of the Gems would make the logical choice.

Here's a newsflash for you guys who get your information from websites as opposed to the actual comics:

Yes, the Collector dislikes Thanos. But at one point in the comics, The Collector was offered something up for trade in exchange for the 6 gems... and he agreed.

The guy on the other end of that exchange? Yes, it was Thanos. Just because he hates him doesn't mean he won't do a deal with him, so it is entirely possible they're following this. NoveCorpsFan, it's in the comics.

ACTUALLY...you're wrong...

The history you have explained about the collector that is...

The Collector is one of the Elders of the Universe, Immortal, Immensely powerful creatures (the group includes the likes of The Grandmaster, Galactus,Entropy etc etc)

Originally The Collector had a wife, a child and spend his days in thought and philosophy...

Until after an unknown ridiculous amount of time, his (also Immortal Wife) lost the will to live and by doing so forsook her immortality and died...

Sinking into depression he meditated on his quandary and had a vision of powerful beings rising up to destroy all life in the universe...this then led him to start collecting art, science rare valuables even life forms to protect them from the destruction of all life...

Over untold amount of time his collecting grew into obsession...

So you're argument is flawed...to a degree...one of the beings he saw rise to power was Thanos! Therefore it is most likely he is collecting the Infinity Gems to prevent Thanos from obtaining them...not because of some hatred born...

So yes the chances of him working for or with Thanos are extremely unlikely considering how much Marvel stick to their source material...

So i really do not think you have anything to worry about...

Also @ Havenless - where are you getting your info from? The collector once exchanged his infinity gem to thanos for the runner who then beat him up after his release but he has never had all 6 gems...

...really wish people got their facts straight before going on rants *sigh*

I think Loki, Thanos, and The Collector will basically be in an arms race and each try to collect the stones/gems. That's how I see it.

Those folks whining that post-credits scene means GOTG will suck are just being silly.

Remember the post-credits scene in THOR that set up THE AVENGERS? You know the one shot in that hallway?

These post-credits scenes for the most part are done at the last minute, cheap, and on the fly really. (Big exception is of course Thanos in AVENGERS.) They're mostly porn for fans to slober over while the rest of the audience doesn't really know what's gong on.

Besides, I liked Del Toro's Space Liberace. I don't know what the hell hel's doing, but I like it. He's from a corner of outer space FAAAAAAAAAR AWAY from Asgard, to say the least.

Plus also escalates the looming danger that we the audience know about (i.e. Thanos) but the heroes are totally in the dark about.
