GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY "Art Of" Book Reveals A New Look At The Video Game Version Of The Team

Square Enix's upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy game has generated a lot of discussion online, but we get a new look at the unique design choices for the team on the cover of an upcoming "Art of" book...

Over the weekend, we got our first look at the Guardians of the Galaxy video game heading our way from Square Enix. As per usual, the designs for these characters has divided fans, though a pre-order bonus will mean that the team can be decked out in their classic gear from the comic books!

We'll actually get to take a much closer look at those redesigned costumes and more in an upcoming "Art of" book that's been announced by Marvel for release on November 2, later this year.

Joining that is a prequel novel titled Guardians of the Galaxy: No Guts, No Glory, written by M.K. England, the acclaimed author of The Disasters. No details have been revealed about that yet, but we're obviously expecting it to flesh out these characters and set the stage for the events of the game.

"Fire up Star-Lord’s jet boots for a wild ride across the cosmos in this third-person action-adventure game, a fresh take on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy," reads the synopsis. "With the unpredictable Guardians at your side, blast your way from one explosive situation to another, with original and iconic Marvel characters caught in a struggle for the fate of the universe. You got this. Probably."

Guardians of the Galaxy will be released on October 26, 2021 on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Can't believe it's coming as soon as October, because the gameplay didn't exactly look October-ready. But in any case, I'm ready for to dance off bro, let's gooooooooooo.

I'm very on the fence about this game. Didn't look like combat had too much variety. And having only Star-Lord playable is a weird decision. Also an October game being revealed in June doesn't really inspire confidence. Square Enix has already screwed over people once with Avengers.

@RageDriver2401 - Completely different dev studio tho. Square Enix didn't make the game.

Man....Drax looks so bad in this game.

@CorndogBurglar - All of square enix’s marvel character designs look like cheap knock-offs of the MCU.

@CorndogBurglar - He really does. Thankfully there are unlockable skins

@thunderpun573 - Eh, everyone's just used to the MCU at this point. Marvel Studios has essentially--and inadvertently--created the definitive looks for all these characters. Now anything that comes out that's its own thing is defaulted to "generic".

I do admit tho, it's hard for me to really dig these versions. I think I'll have to play the game to get used to them. But I def don't see them as knockoffs. Just another studio doing their own versions.

@Tonic24k - I feel like they could have easily gone for the pre-MCU designs and maybe even team. Maybe the Guardians as an IP exist in a weird place where they're comfortable making a game that's explicitly not tied to the MCU, but not comfortable enough to lean into Guardians elements that predated the MCU.

@Tonic24k - For the most part, the MCU Drax looked very similar to the comic version. The MCU version has those markings all over him, but thats the only difference as far as looks.

This just looks weird. Like someone dumped paint on him.

@CorndogBurglar - and yet he still looks better than the abortion that is Bautista Drax. God that character has been butchered.

@CorndogBurglar - Yeah, they made the red just concentrated in one area instead of distinct markings. It's definitely an awful design. Here's to hoping he's got good alternative skins...

I thought the reveal of the game was cool, it looks fun. I dig the designs of the team, like they took inspiration from both the MCU, comics, and they put their own spin on them. Idk what people were shitting on this for? I’ll play this at some point but the end of my year will be dedicated to Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite.

@TexasAvenger - For sure. I think the gameplay looks pretty unique. I like how the combat involves calling in special attacks from the other Guardians. And with the cool downs it means you'll be utilizing everyone and will require strategy on whose attacks you save for certain moments, etc.

I'm also really digging the "Huddle" mode that initiates a soundtrack. That's gonna be hella fun.

@Tonic24k - Maybe it’s because people are so burned by Avengers’ trash ass? But this looks nothing like it so I’m good. People wanted a single player story driven game with Marvel characters. Eidos Montreal is doing just that, and they still complain lmao.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 6/17/2021, 6:21 AM
@Tonic24k - My problem is it looks like a watered down Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Why not let us actually switch between the other Guardians? I think if they allowed that, I would be much more excited for this.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 6/17/2021, 6:24 AM
@TexasAvenger - Just making a single player, story driven game isn't enough lol. It still needs to be fun and good. I'm on the fence, but the criticism for this game is warranted.
Tonic24k
Tonic24k - 6/17/2021, 8:14 PM
@CorndogBurglar - Because the story revolves around playing as Star-Lord. I mean...we just got our first glance at it. So the criticism really isn't warranted. It's too soon and people are so quick to cast judgement without having informed reasoning.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 6/17/2021, 8:23 PM
@Tonic24k - I mean, the story revolved around playing as Cloud in FF7 Remake, but you could still switch between the other party members during combat. If you could do that in this game instead of just issuing orders to the other Guardians then I think a lot of people would feel better about this game. I know I would. I'm still willing to give it a chance though.
Tonic24k
Tonic24k - 6/17/2021, 8:30 PM
@CorndogBurglar - I think they just have a combat system that's intended to work like it does. I'm intrigued by it. I imagine you'll be able to unlock and level up different move sets of each Guardian.

I mean, I'm all about co-op. I'd to have a group of friends all playing as different Guardians. But this seems like a neat approach. But we shall see.

Has everyone learned nothing from Square Enix’s Avengers game? I’m not touching this game with a ten foot pole. It’s clearly rushed, you can only play as Star Lord??
Dotanuki
Dotanuki - 6/17/2021, 7:01 AM
@SpideyPuffsMJ - no kidding, the GoTG are totally suited for different play styles. This is just a quick money grab. And Rocket’s goatee looks like shit.
HarrowRed
HarrowRed - 6/17/2021, 1:03 PM
@SpideyPuffsMJ - Honestly, I'd rather play a game like this than the Avengers game. when you try to create a game that has 6-8 characters who all have distinct power sets, of course the game feels half baked. Everybody is watered down.

Hulk should be traversing the city like he did in Ultimate Destruction, Cap should be closer to Arkham Asylum, and Iron Man should be in flight. To give a satisfying playstyle to all of these characters and allow the player to switch to them on the fly, they'd have to spend 6x as long designing a full game around each hero.

I'm much more confident in a game that only has to do a good job translating one superhero's style into the game.
