GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Is About 'Giving A Shit,' Says James Gunn + Prelude Comic Announced

"[Marvel] came to me and told me about the movie," James Gunn told Total Film when asked how he became involved with Guardians. "I met with them and at first I wasn't sure about it, but then I went home and I couldn't get it out of my head. I wrote up a document that was 20 pages long. I could really clearly see what the movie was, visually. I wrote about that and that just got me to the next level." After reassuring we'll see the twisted humor from his previous films, Gunn was then asked did Marvel mind. "No no. In fact, it's a 100 percent true story that when I turned in mu first draft they were really happy with the screenplay - which of course I was overjoyed with - and the only comment they had, which was basically from Joss Whedon, was tat the wanted it to be 'more James Gunn'. So that's what I did... I said, 'It's your funeral!'"

"I don't think it's the riskiest Marvel property," the director says of Guardians of the Galaxy. "I think Iron Man was by far the riskiest. It was a film company that didn't have much, raising money to make a film based on a property that wasn't that much more well known than Guardians of the Galaxy. So I think it's not even close to the riskiest Marvel property." Revealing that he was definitely inspired by some comic book storylines and visuals, James Gunn says, "Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning's series from 2008 and the stuff after that is really the linchpin for the movie. But I think it's less about taking actual story-points and more about taking what is the essence and feeling of that series." "For me this movie is about family," he continued. "It's about a bunch of people that don't have a family and they learn to love each other. And I think it's about giving a shit. I think we live in a world where we're taught that not giving a shit is the coolest thing, and this is a movie that says it's really OK to give a shit."

How he feels about working with a mix of live-action and CG, the director says "It's wonderful because every take, Groot and Rocket are perfect in their performance! In my brain. So I think the difficulties for this come up later when we're putting it all together, dealing with a bunch of FX artists who have to act." Lastly, when asked where he sees Guardians of the Galaxy fitting within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Gunn replied: "We're Marvel Cosmic, we're in the outer space of Marvel. I've said this before, but I think of The Avengers as The Beatles and the Guardians are The Rolling Stones. That's how I feel about the group." What do you think?

Meanwhile, a comic book prelude to the Guardians of the Galaxy movie has been announced with the product description reading: "‘Prepare for Marvel Studios’ newest big-screen blockbuster with these all-new stories taking place just before the film! Who is Nebula? What tragic events forged her unbreakable allegiance to her dark lord? And how does Korath the Pursuer fit in? Then, as Gamora begins her quest for the Orb, see firsthand why she is the considered the most dangerous woman in the universe!" Head over to Stitch Kingdom for more Guardians books.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand - with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film opens August 1, 2014.

Had a feeling he would say Iron Man was riskier.

ezio619 - 1/17/2014, 9:15 AM
i think iron man was riskier in that it was released before incredible hulk, iron man was known among us comic fans but not many of the auidience knew about him so it was a risk in that, but good word of mouth helped the movie, while hulk was known amongst the GA and of course us so it wasnt a risk at all

Well I think IM and GOTG are both risky in their own ways. That being said this movie will either make Marvel Studios, but it will not break it if it does not do well. At least Marvel takes chances cough cough Warner Bros........

i know people bring up him being involved in Movie 43, the farrelly brothers told him to make it like that, plus his segment was shown during the midcredits of the film, i have heard that Slither, which was his first directorial, a sci fi horror comedy got a mostly positive response, Super got a mixed response, but it was sort of mostly positive, a dark comedy about a wannabe superhero, he is a very unique and insane filmmaker who has some crazy and out there ideas

When fans of a particular title or character read that their movie was "risky", it should be read as saying "it had a niche audience".

@Kayo Not a clue, although a few days ago James Gunn uploaded a photo from that astral "Hand of God" phenomenon and I immediately associated that to the Infinity Gauntlet.

Hopefully they tone down the humor in the dramatic scenes so that I can actually give a shit, unlike MARVEL's last few movies, Avengers included.

If you've seen Gunn's other films, you should know humour and drama balancing isn't a problem.

@ezio619; "Its gonna have tons of humor, but gunn has emphasized that there is tons of drama in the film that may surprise people."

One can only hope, but MARVEL Studios has a habit of taking the films away from their Directors and rounding out all the edges. Their overuse of humor to undercut any heaviness robs their movies of any and all pathos.

I love where he said, "It's your funeral!" when they asked for the script to more James Gunn. The guy knows he has a deranged sense of humour and it's gonna make this movie incredible. The humour's not gonna be something kids are gonna laugh at, that's for sure. As for the dramatic aspect, he can certainly manage it.

@ Omarvls

Yea if Guardians of the Galaxy is a success then i could see a Solo Nova Film in the works. WB will probably Reboot Green Lantern. Fox will fast track a Silver Surfer film. Bryan Singer will probably try to jump on the cosmic bandwagon by introducing the Shi'ar Empire and the Imperial Guard into the FoXmen universe.
