GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Is About 'Giving A Shit,' Says James Gunn + Prelude Comic Announced
Revealing which Marvel movie he thinks is riskier than Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as a comic book series he considers a linchpin for his movie, hit the jump and check out the latest from James Gunn
"I don't think it's the riskiest Marvel property," the director says of Guardians of the Galaxy. "I think Iron Man was by far the riskiest. It was a film company that didn't have much, raising money to make a film based on a property that wasn't that much more well known than Guardians of the Galaxy. So I think it's not even close to the riskiest Marvel property." Revealing that he was definitely inspired by some comic book storylines and visuals, James Gunn says, "Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning's series from 2008 and the stuff after that is really the linchpin for the movie. But I think it's less about taking actual story-points and more about taking what is the essence and feeling of that series." "For me this movie is about family," he continued. "It's about a bunch of people that don't have a family and they learn to love each other. And I think it's about giving a shit. I think we live in a world where we're taught that not giving a shit is the coolest thing, and this is a movie that says it's really OK to give a shit."
How he feels about working with a mix of live-action and CG, the director says "It's wonderful because every take, Groot and Rocket are perfect in their performance! In my brain. So I think the difficulties for this come up later when we're putting it all together, dealing with a bunch of FX artists who have to act." Lastly, when asked where he sees Guardians of the Galaxy fitting within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Gunn replied: "We're Marvel Cosmic, we're in the outer space of Marvel. I've said this before, but I think of The Avengers as The Beatles and the Guardians are The Rolling Stones. That's how I feel about the group." What do you think?
