Expect GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 To Be A More Emotional Movie

James Gunn won big at the Saturn Awards on Thursday, where he was naturally quizzed about Guardians Of The Galaxy 2. Reiterating that it will be a smaller, more emotional film, he also played coy when asked whether a certain new character will appear. Check it out!

James Gunn has been insisting that Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 will be a lot more intimate for some time now. Having already revealed there will be fewer characters in play in the sequel than the first movie, Gunn once again emphasized the movie's more emotional elements while briefly talking to Collider at the 41st Annual Saturn Awards.

"Well I think I've said so much already... I think it's a more emotional movie. It's both a bigger movie and a smaller movie because we focus more intensely on some of the characters. We learn a lot about fathers in the second movie and I think we focus a lot on that"

"You'll have to wait and see the movie to see who's introduced" Gunn added with a cheeky smile, when asked if 'Magus' could possibly appear in the movie. Adam Warlock's evil alter-ego has recently been heavily rumored to play a big role in Avengers: Infinity War, so a prior appearance in Guardians 2 does seem possible. Gunn has previously insisted there will only be one major new character in the sequel, and many fans believe this to be Adam Warlock.

What do you think about these developments? Are you happy to see Gunn scale his movie down a little in favor of a more focused story, or would you rather see more fan-favorite cosmic characters appear in the sequel? Sound off with your thoughts in the comments below!

I might watch this one in the theaters. I don't think I got the full experience of GOTG when I watched it on a 6 inch headrest screen on an airplane.

He has said a character from the first movie isn't returning. I'm not as well versed in the guardians comic's who from the first movie may be left out? Drax or Gamora ?

Yeah, but it was an international flight and I needed to drown out the crying kid behind me.

Deep and meaningful?

Not if the Disney higher-ups have anything to say about it. Prepare for your film to be yet another utility film for Infinity War, Mr. Gunn.

With all this talking about fathers, Thanos has gotta have a pretty decent role.

Joss Whedon also believed he was going to make a smaller, more intimate sequel. Then MARVEL walked in and slapped him in the face with that Hollywood Action-Dick. Gunn gone get it too.

@NeoBaggins

Yep. You're right. I doubt Gunn will return after GOTG 2 when that happens.

Gunn rocks, Warlock/Magus would be awesome in GOTG 2

Is there a movie that Nate hasn't loved?

@LexHairFight

No, I wouldn't assume it is. You never know what the audience will except or reject. But if there's confusion in the process, it will show on screen.

@Ramiel

Agreed. I'm actually curious to how the Russo's will fare under that type of managing. The writers too, of course. Russos's strike me as artists who will walk out if there's too much interference. The director has to believe in what he/she is doing to make a good film.

Is people still saying Marvel made all of AoU just because of a couple scenes Whedon commented on?
Whedon had like 10 times more freedom in AoU than in Avengers. And Marvel changes things in every movie (including TWS and GOTG), not just the ones that give you the opportunity to talk bad about them

You idiots moaning about how Whedon was 'forced' to put stuff in AOU to set up Infinity War do realise that all of the stuff that set up future movies (dream sequences, Klaue, Mind Stone) was put in there by Whedon himself? There's even an interview he did where he stated that Marvel execs tried to remove some of that stuff from the film, but he fought them to keep it in there.

Seeing how Guardians was plenty emotional already, I don't know if I can handle Gunn turning the dial up even more for the sequel.

Seriously though, I'm liking everything I'm hearing about this. I'm sure it'll have plenty of set-up for the Infinity War movies, but I'd be shocked if it isn't as natural as the universe-building was in the first movie with the Collector. Gunn knows what he's doing, and Marvel clearly has confidence in him after the success of Guardians.

"Whedon had like 10 times more freedom in AoU than in Avengers."

People like to forget that it was Whedon's idea in the first place, way back when they were still filming The Avengers, for Ultron to be the villain in the sequel. Not Marvel's. Make no mistake folks, AoU was Whedon's movie. He just got a little carried away with making the movie bigger than the original (which he said he WASN'T trying to do, but happened anyway), and so the movie suffered from that and all the edits they had to make for the running time.

Let me guess:

This is how the beat the villain in GOTG 2:

Does Gunn want us to cry or something? The best one was pretty sad, especially with Star Lords mother.

You know, I may just have a weird sense of humor, but that's just weird wording

@ckal- Same here. Groom's 'death' was the only MCU moment I genuinely teared up at.
