James Gunn Says GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 Will Not Center On Star-Lord's Father Revelation

Though Peter Quill's paternity in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will have an impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, director James Gunn doesn't want the revelation to become the center of the sequel.

At one point during IGN's interview with James Gunn this week, the Guardians of the Galaxy director had expressed interest in other cosmic Marvel characters beyond his titular ragtag team. And given one Celestial (and the severed head of another) appeared in the first movie, Gunn was asked if he'd like to explore more of the ancient giant species in the 2017 sequel. "Maybe at some point, yeah," he replied. "I mean, I love that guy (Eson the Searcher) that we see in the Collector's lab. I love that character. I think he's really cool. The visual effects artists did a great job with him, and they were given a pretty big task, to create this character in a short amount of time and put him in there. Yeah, I like that stuff, the Celestials. I like the whole idea that the Guardians are a bunch of mortals playing in the field of gods. It's really about their mortality in the face of all that stuff that makes it both dramatic and fun." An ancient race that will certainly be explored in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is the one belonging to Peter Quill's father. However, James Gunn tells IGN that he does not want the mystery character's revelation to be the center of the sequel. "It's funny, I don't want to blackbox it too much," he said. "You know what I mean? Yeah, it's like, we'll find out who is dad is, and it's going to serve the story. It's not going to be something like in the Crying Game, though, where the big thing was, 'He has a penis!' [or The Sixth Sense's big twist]. I don't want to do that. It's not about the revelation of who it is; it's about what his relationship is to that character." When asked if the revelation will have an impact on the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, Gunn said, "Yeah, I think it's important." What do you think?

I still can't believe they showed this scene in the movie. I mean, how much more unashamedly comic-booky can you get? Zola's scene in The Winter Soldier ranks up there as well.

Yep SauronsBANE that was beautiful and very unexpected for me...

Still think Thanos will be the uncle of Star-Lord...

When Gunn said that his father would have an impact of the larger universe I thought that maybe it could be Mar Vell. So in the 2nd movie Quill meets him, they bond but then somehow gets to earth to meet up with Carol Danvers. I'm not sure, just rambling now ha.

I want Starhawk to be the father.

Agreed, such a great scene!

The thing about Sixth Sense is that M Night didn't really try to hide the plot twist during the movie. There's so many hints about it, but every time that you start to think that something might be up, he introduced something else that grabbed your attention immediately. He never gave you time to actually think about it. Pretty great filmmaking, if you ask me.

This movie was so fun. It's just so unabashedly a movie about comic book characters and a comic book world. No dumbing it down or making it "realistic" or "accessible". Just is what it is and it succeeds.

Yondu was hired by Quill's father years ago to pick him up from Earth, but Yondu kept him instead. I highly doubt that Thanos hired Yondu, ;)

His father, StarFox, hence Thanos will be Star-Lord's uncle...but that's a "twist", so Gunn is probably just covering his ass...ok, it may be Starhawk though...[frick] it, who knows...

Good, they should be battling Thanos and his forces. If they are going to call themselves the Guardians of the Galaxy than they should actually be guarding the galaxy from evil not looking for Star-Lords pops.

Thanos must be more involved, he is the biggest threat to all galaxies, for the GotG to nit go after Thanos and his forces makes them look bad in my opinion.
