THE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY HOLIDAY SPECIAL Is An Epilogue To Phase 4; Advent Calendar LEGO Set Revealed

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn has addressed The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special's place in the MCU, while a new LEGO advent calendar teases what we might see in that story...

When Marvel Studios revealed the remainder of its Phase 4 slate at last month's San Diego Comic-Con, there was no mention of The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Phase 5 kicks off with next year's Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and, as the title suggests, this Guardians special should be with us in time for Christmas,

Something tells us both this project and that untitled Werewolf by Night Halloween Special will be unveiled during Disney+ Day next month, but, in the meantime, filmmaker James Gunn has provided some clarification.

Responding to a fan on social media, the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director (who shot the Holiday Special when cameras were rolling on the threequel), said that "The Guardians Holiday Special is the epilogue of Phase 4."

That will make it our final trip to the MCU this year, and it will no doubt be nice to end things on a lighter note after the emotional Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Remember, Spider-Man: Far From Home was similarly considered an epilogue to Phase 3 after the shocks and surprises delivered by Avengers: Endgame

A LEGO advent calendar based on The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special has also been revealed. While it doesn't tell us much about the standalone story, we see what appear to be new costumes for the heroes along with a handful of unfamiliar ships. Groot decked out like a Christmas tree, though? That is awesome.

Stay tuned for updates on The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. As for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, that's set to arrive in theaters on May 5, 2023.

I'm mostly concerned about LEGO Mantis' antennae. Yikes. Is that James Gunn's personal design?

@rychlec - Yeah I am sure James Gunn has the time to design LEGO

Does anyone care about GOTG anymore? It seems that Marvel Studios has shot itself in the foot so badly these last 12 months.

@GeneralZod - I know I do, Guardians 1 is still a classic, and I’m ready for James Gunn to make a return to the MCU after doing some of his best work for DC. I also just played the GOTG game from last year and that along with their appearance in L+T got me geared up for more Guardians action.

@thunderpun573 - I still think GOTG was the best MCU film ever made.

@GeneralZod - easily top 5 for me. I’m hopeful that v3 could be the best installment in the trilogy, mostly just based off the fact that Gunn has been writing it for years now and is on a bit of a hot streak at the moment. Holiday special will probably be kinda weird but that’s kinda the whole point of the guardians so I’m here for it.

The first GotG was the most innovative MCU film to that moment. Pleased everybody, CBM fans or not.

Gotg2 was bad but it had some good moments (Yondu and some Rocket scenes).

The perfect tone was back in Infinity War, funny but not dumb.

Problem is Gunn messed up last time he directed the characters... and this looks almost like a MCU side project.

Not hoping much tbh.

What's the point of having an epilogue to a phase that didn't have a central plot? This phase was just a bunch of disconnected films setting up other phases. Hell we had to be told at comic con that phase 4 is over.

In fact, with this what's even the point of having phases anymore? They aren't building up to their own avengers movie anymore. So why not ditch the phases and just make them sagas?

Don't really care where it's set. They're are the only characters I care about at this point, so I'm excited we'll get them twice. Relatively close
