David Harbour has been quite vocal about the filming and production process of his upcoming Hellboy reboot. In numerous interviews the star has cited his age as one of the factors that made filming so difficult.

Now, during an interview with Collider, the actor opens up about his experience on set, including the process involved in getting into costume and makeup every day.

"It was the hardest shoot I’ve ever done, primarily because there are just so many stunts in it," Harbour said. "It’s a very action-packed movie. There’s a lot of story, too, and a lot of big scenes, but there’s a lot of action. There’s a lot of me running around, jumping and turning, and punching stuff. It’s crazy! I’m 42, and the fact that no one asked me to do this in my 20s is so insulting. Why did I have to become a super-monster in my 40s?! My bones are not the same as they used to be."

Although the filming was challenging, ultimately Harbour was encouraged that he could reinvent the iconic Dark Horse Comics character for the big screen. "It was very hard, in that way, but it’s also really thrilling ‘cause I get to carve out an entirely new mythos to this guy and I get to play on this big palette of witches and giants and demons," he explained. "To me, it’s very Shakespearean. I grew up doing regional Shakespeare and when Hamlet sees the ghost of his father, there’s something about that that you don’t really do in film anymore. We rarely see an indie film where you have an emotional pathos where somebody sees a ghost. This is a palette where you can have demons and ghosts and big creatures and things that are epic, in that way. That was super fun!"

But while Harbour had fun actually playing the character, the make-up process to transform him into the character was a diffrent story.

In terms of the make-up, that was not that fun. I will say that I got to a weird place with it. I think we had 70-plus applications of make-up, which is a full mask. By day 30 or 35, I’d wake up in the morning and look at myself in the mirror and everything was blurry. And then, I’d sit in the chair and for an hour and a half or two hours, they’d apply that face. Then, I’d look back up in the mirror and be like, “Oh, there I am!” I started to associate my own image with that other face. That was pretty cool! I didn’t really like my own face, as much as I liked this guy’s face, so I’d get excited in the morning when I’d put on the different face, but it was hard. There was a lot of listening to music on headphones and a lot of sleeping, if you could with four people applying glue to your face. As hard as acting can get, and it really does get hard with 15-hour days of jumping around and hurting yourself and going without lunch and having to be in make-up for three hours, the one thing that I do remember is that there are people that have to do jobs that are far worse. For three hours, I’m in a weird uncomfortable position where people put glue on my face, but it’s what I love to do and the fact that I get to do it leaves me with a bunch of gratitude."

Production on Hellboy, which releases January 11, 2019, has wrapped. Harbour has previously teased it to be a "monster movie that's dark and scary."

As a firm fan of the Del Toro films, I can honestly say from what little I've seen and heard of the reboot, I'm looking forward to it. Harbour is a great choice for the right hand of doom.
I hope the re-casting of Wolverine goes this well.

@Stealthduck - Dont sleep on the director either. Neil Marshall did The Descent and Dog Soldiers - two awesome low budget cult horror movies

@mrawly2 - Absolutely agree, I love those films! A few years ago, my town showed the Descent in an old silver mine during Halloween, which was very cool. One of the best and underrated horror films of recent time.
Dog Soldiers is, to me, also a classic.

The Descent is a great and vastly underrated filmy that was missed by a lot of people. I can't recommend it enough.

@L0RDbuckethead - I wholeheartedly agree! I was torn between wanting desperately to see a sequel, yet worried that a poor, over-budgeted attempt to cash-in would ruin a great story (that difficult second album syndrome). The fact it was an all-female cast went rather unnoticed also, which is a shame.
Great story, great creatures, great side-plot, great acting, great ending.

@Stealthduck - Yeah, it's best to leave it as it was with the one movie. I wouldn't wanna see a shitty sequel just for a cash grab.

And yes, the fact that it was an all-female cast was something that made the movie more enjoyable for me, personally, it really made you feel for the characters more as they were on a vacation as old friends. Great film. I will be doing a re-watch soon, for sure.

As someone who watched both season of Stranger Things over the last couple of months, I am now looking forward to this and have to say that I love the casting of Harbour.
He seems like a cool guy from his interviews and is funny on twitter as well, also a really good actor.

You have an awesome taste in movies.

Told my friend from work that I was 9 years old when I first saw T2 and he was shocked but I told him it was a different time.

Why compare those two images of him side by side? Yeah he lost weight and got in better shape for the role, but that picture of Hellboy isn't his real body. It's a bodysuit.
Chewtoy

@Boyle360 - Probably because he’s talking about the extensive amount of make-up that he had to have applied every morning, and how he began to associate with it rather than his real face.

The guy has got to take better care of himself. He's only 42 and he looks like a 10 lb. pile of shit in a 5 lb. bag. He's not old at all.

I’m really excited to see how they make this different from the del toro films. Hopefully a little grittier and darker even though I loved the other 2.
