Del Toro Says He Wont Film Again in Mexico

The famed director of the Hellboy movies as well as classics such as Cronos, Pans Labrynth and the Orphanage says he will never again film in his home country of Mexico because of his fathers kidnapping 10 years ago.

Del Toro has expressed to the press that his fathers kidnapping 10 years ago has left him fearing for his life. His fathers kidnappers were never all caught and his family recieved death threats for some time after his release.

Del Toro says that while filming in Mexico his daily routines become public knowledge, causing him to fear for his safety. He calls it a 'forced exile' and is deeply saddened by the thought of never filming in Mexico again.

According to the article, Mexico has one of the highest kidnapping rates in the world.

This is sad news to think that a man cannot make his movies in the place where he grew up and created some of his best work. Lucky for us however he is now living in New Zealand, home of the Hobbit.

Is anyone else overexcited for him to be directing the Hobbit and for Peter Jackson to still be on board?

It's sad he can't film in his own heaven, cause Mexico is an exceptionally beautiful country. And besides all the crime and violence, mexicans are truly warm and kind people.

Jackson couldn't have picked a better successor for The Hobbit. He blends in perfectly with Jackson's style.

Well the movies are to be shot in New Zealand so I am thinking that the movies will have a similar look to the LOTR.
My mistake on the part of the Orphanage, he was the executive producer. Still a very good film with his name attached. I highly recomend it.
I posted this because I just imagined if the country I grew up in and loved made me fear my life I would pretty annoyed to say the least. Plus your right that it is revenue and exposure lost for Mexico because he is a very talented film maker who loves the country.

Being from Mexican descendants as well, we've all known about these "kidnappings" for ages so I wouldn't see why filming their again would be such a huge issue. Especially now since the man has the security and hundreds of people working along side of him. It's not like those Mexican "kidnappers" are super soldiers. Most of the time they're just normal looking bums who would normally threaten you with a butter knife.
Still, sympathies for his father. I actually know alot of friends who have had family members kidnapped and never even found.

It says in the article that because of who he is that his whereabouts are constantly public knowledge. So wherever he goes people know hes there and will know his location.
Plus he must have had something happen to him that scared him over the edge.
My sympathies to the people you know and anyone else who has had something like this happen to them. I would not know what to do with myself if someone in my family was kidnapped and never heard from again.
