HELLBOY Star David Harbour Promises A Grittier, More Brutal Take On The Character; Plus Two New Photos

Following last week's trailer debut, Lionsgate has released two more new photos from Neil Marshall's Hellboy, offering a look at the titular hero consulting his father figure Professor Bruttenholm.

While the recent trailer leaned heavily on the more comedic elements in Neil Marshall's Hellboy, it appears the upcoming reboot will actually be a whole lot more brutal than we may be anticipating as star David Harbour teases a considerably more gritty take on the character while comic creator Mike Mignola promises the film will fully embrace the more traditionally horror elements from his comic series.

Speaking with Empire, Harbour explains, “There’s really a sense that you’re actually killing things, even if they are giants or monsters. You’re chopping their heads off, you’re bathing in their blood and you’re feeling the complex feelings of actually cutting the heart out of another thing. We’re taking the time to deal with the fact that Hellboy is a killer. He’s a weapon.

In addition to Harbour as the titular half-demon, the film will also feature Milla Jovovich as Nimue, Ian McShane as Professor Bruttenholm, Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan, and Daniel Dae Kim as Ben Daimio.

Short of stellar reviews and substantial word of mouth, I doubt it will do any better (if not worse) than the Del Toro films at the box-office. The first trailer had just about the exact same feel of the past two films. If the new one is in fact Rated-R, they need to release an R-Rated trailer. Cause the first trailer was a bit ho-hum.

the comics are extremely dark and gritter ..... i read lucifer ride a dudes dad as a horse once ..... at least the del toro version brought a different spin on the character light heart'd wise. that trailer looked like they should've just kept to making HB3 imo

@knocturnalzen10 - I'm a HUGE Hellboy fan and the comics are dark and gritty in a sense, but I think Del Toro actually captured the Gothic nature of them quite well.

It wasn't all blood and guts, but the comics have an unearthy, sinister feel to them. A creepiness that Del Toro got just right.

Harbour sounds like he is saying they are going for blood splatter and chopped heads in a way that is almost excessive. The comics was more about the tone and atmosphere.

A couple of good trailers can still turn this around, including a red-band trailer, just keep putting out the amazing poster out in the mean time (but maybe stop with the hellfire colors of the last 3 or 4, it's going to gt old fast).

After reading what Mignola wrote, and now Harbour I belive it will be darker than the 1st 2 movies...the trailer is misleading, (although that was a terrible choice of songs) I'm still super hyped to see it! Hellboy comics are some of my favorite stories! he's such a great storyteller so, HAVE FAITH!
