Direct to DVD FRIGHT NIGHT 2 On the Way

Last years' FRIGHT NIGHT remake was a surprisingly solid little vampire flick, but didn't exactly light the box office on fire. It must have made money somewhere, however, because now a sequel is on the way. Find out after the jump if anyone from the original will be returning this time around, or if FRIGHT NIGHT 2 is a sequel in name only...

Many horror fans, myself included, were taken aback by the decision to remake 1985's REAR WINDOW meets SALEM'S LOT creature feature FRIGHT NIGHT. The main reason for this being that the original still holds up so incredibly well, and contains two simply amazing performances from Roddy McDowell and Chris Sarandon.

Nevertheless, when I did finally get around to seeing FRIGHT NIGHT 2011, I was actually pretty impressed. Sure, it helped that David (DOCTOR WHO) Tennant was among the cast, and that the script was by Marti (BUFFY, ANGEL) Noxon, but mostly I think that the remake succeeded because, like the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake before it, it tried to do something new and exciting with the same premise.

If you're going to remake a classic, that seems to be the way to go.

Unfortunately the care given to the FRIGHT NIGHT remake, does not appear to be being given to its sequel. ShockTillYouDrop reports that the direct-to-DVD FRIGHT NIGHT 2 is set to start filming in Romania soon, with Eduardo Rodriguez (CURANDERO, STASH HOUSE, FEAR ITSELF) at the helm. They also warn not to expect Colin Farrell, Anton Yelchin or even David Tennant to come back, as the story is standalone, and completely unrelated to the plot of the remake.

Shamelessly using the name to sell a vampire movie no one would ever watch otherwise. Somebody is doing a good job somewhere... About the remake, I'd say I TRIED to like it but couldn't forget the original.
