Yep, Growl is following in the grand tradition of spinning off a comic before the film even begins shooting! This one totally escaped my radar, but maybe you've heard of it. The concept is certainly an intriguing one. Director Sxv'Leithan( pronounced "skuh-lee-than)Essex dropped by Shocktillyoudrop to provide them some info on and first images from the movie.

"It's Fight Club versus werewolves, two of my favorite things thrown in the ring to see what will come out alive. But what I love most about it is its completely character driven. I started writing and wanting to direct after seeing Aliens in theaters and how James Cameron made you care about the characters who would eventually be in peril. I love the characters in Growl like they are my family and it sucks to have to kill some of them off. But they do die some glorious deaths. I'm a total horror freak and I write with horror junkies like me in mind, creating the type of film we really want to see on the big screen."

"We have the trilogy outlined, a prequel graphic novel and a videogame that sets up the events and characters in Growl 2. I'm a huge comic book fan as well and love when ancillary properties directly link into the films. There will be lots of character background and connective tissue in the graphic novel and videogame and it won't be just a moneymaking tool. This is for horror junkies like Lee(Producer Lee Cleary) and I. More meat to chew on while you wait for the next installment. Lee and I are going to be in the world of Growl for a long while and we couldn't be happier about it."

According to Shocktillyoudrop, the premise of Growl is, a traveling underground fight club called 'The Brawlers' arrive at a derelict ghost town tucked away in the Colorado Rockies. They meet the town's only residents, the Maxilla family, who want to buy on to the fight card. But the Maxilla family's true intentions for the Brawler crew is soon revealed in teeth and claws. Some will be hunted, some will be feed, and some will become part of the family whether they like it or not.

To be honest, although I would happily watch Miss Sackhoff do dishes, and I do like the idea behind this, I never allow myself to get exited for Werewolf movies..because their hasn't been a really great one since John Ladis' American Werewolf In London! Could Growl change all that? Well, aside from Sackhoff, the cast includes Josh Kelly (Circle of Eight), Paul Bean, Jennifer Lee Wiggins (Bled) and Mark Sherman....What do you mean "Who?"! But, Kiefer Sutherland is also expected to join the proceedings after he is wrapped on Lars Von Trier's Melancholia.

Here's the teaser poster in full..

Thanks to Shocktillyoudrop for all of the info and images.

Tea, true, I should have said great, Dog Soldiers is only decent I thought, nothing special. The end let it down for me.

haha, that was a travesty. I actually never made it to the end of that. It wasn't the special effects that let Dog Soldiers down, the characters and the script just imploded at the end, it was like watching a different movie. I did like it though. Ginger Snaps is another zero budget Werewolf film that decent. But in general its a notoriously hard thing to pull off...and I know you know all about pulling off werewolves!

Oh The Howling was good too! That poster actually reminds me of that a bit.

"American werewolf in London" is the best ever, IMO, but "The Howling" was the only one to give me nightmares. I think that's why no werewolf movie will ever match up. We're not kids anymore and instead of spending most the movie covering our eyes, we're critiquing the cinematography.

Btw, that fourth pic almost looks like Mathew mcconahey....I'd do him.

LOL!!

@ RorMachine - I think because there have been no real exceptional installments to this particular genre is the reason we will go to see it! I'm sure my initial reaction of "Another one? Let it lie..." is shared by many but this set up seems to add a little sheen to the idea. Character driven stories have to work in a film like this, it's what we relate to; fear. Or else you can't wait to see everyone get torn apart so you can make a sandwich. I had a great sandwich after The Wolfman.....

Very very true. After Growl I will probably have smoked salmon and brie on Jewish rye or maybe roast beef with tapenade

@ SixSixteen - Superb! Always nice to find a fellow believer in the post-lychan-gut-buster sarnie!

@ tea - I concur, Dog Soldiers was a decent film. Pertwee with his guts in his hand for an hour and a half? Sweet!

haha, I love when conversation turns to sandwiches myself. I'm hungry.

True Stealthduck, as much as I love Werewolves, and watch anything with em in it(I even watched Cursed..shudder) there comes a time when you just have to admit that aside from some exceptions, they have sucked onscreen. I think directors/writers either take them too seriously(Wolfman) or not seriously enough(most other stuff) AAWIN is billed as a horror comedy and although its damn funny in parts, it works more as a horror drama in the end because the characters are so likable. I didn't give a flying frack what happened to anyone in Wolfman.

American Werewolf in London is tops, The Howling was fun in a campy sort of way, Ginger Snaps had it's moments, but Dog Soldiers is hugely overrated. I also have to give some props to both Wolf and Wolfen (though it's technically not a werewolf movie).

Uk, it was on tv there a few months ago. Truly awful! But I had to keep watching until the end because it was giving me a giggle.

Noredberg, yeah Wolfen is pretty great too..forgot about that. Not exactly werewolves because they were never men, but still..
