Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions announced earlier today that due to popular demand, they're bringing David Gordon Green's critically acclaimed Halloween sequel to IMAX theaters for just one week only, starting this Friday.
Halloween slashed its way to a massive $76.2 million opening weekend, the second-best October debut of all-time, behind Sony's Venom ($80.2M), and the second-best opening for an R-rated horror film ever, behind Warner Bros. and New Line's It ($123.4M).
This move is actually pretty smart on Universal's part as it comes shortly after Damien Chazelle's First Man, which has been screening in IMAX for the past two weeks, essentially petered out at the global box office. To date, the critically acclaimed Ryan Gosling-starrer has earned just $56.1 million on its estimated $59 million production budget.
Universal moving Halloween into the IMAX screens it had already booked for another week is just good business sense and should provide a pretty major boost at the box office all week, especially considering that next week is actually Halloween.
Jamie Lee Curtis returns to her iconic role as Laurie Strode, who comes to her final confrontation with Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago.
