AVENGERS: ENDGAME Star Robert Downey Jr. Says He's "All Done" Being The Marvel Cinematic Universe's Iron Man

Avengers: Endgame killed off Tony Stark for good after he used the Infinity Stones to destroy Thanos and his army, and the actor has now reiterated that he's "all done" with his MCU obligations...

Robert Downey Jr. had a legendary run as Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that came to an end with Avengers: Endgame. In that movie, Tony Stark unleashed the power of the Infinity Stones to destroy Thanos and his army, but it was a decision that came at the cost of his own life.

While there have been rumblings about Downey reprising the role in the animated What If? series coming to Disney+, there's also a pretty compelling fan theory that the actor will get the chance to return as an A.I. when Ironheart finally joins the MCU. However, based on recent comments from the Iron Man star, it doesn't sound like anything like that is on his radar... not for now, at least.

Talking on the SmartLess Podcast, Downey confirmed that he's finished playing Tony Stark, and replied with a simple "that's all done" when discussing any future obligations to this shared world.

This isn't a surprise, but we've learned to never say never when it comes to the MCU, and there are still rumblings online that Downey has shot a cameo of some sort for Black Widow. We'll have to wait and see on that front, of course, but it's possible it will just be archive footage from Iron Man 2.

Are you hoping to see more Iron Man in the MCU?

I respect it. Gives more weight to his Endgame sacrifice if he doesn't return.
Maybe in 7-8 years time for a huge event of some sort

Yeah he told his story, time to move on, Downey is a good actor, would be nice to see him to something like Chaplin again

Ever since Iron Man, it seems like he has mostly done action blockbusters.

@dracula - he’s done a few low budget dramas, but they’ve all been critically and financially received badly, unfortunately

@Se4M4NSt4ine - He definitely got love for Chef and The Judge. Both were low budget too so they didn’t need to be blockbusters to be successful.

@newhire13 - for sure. But a film needs to make 30% more than its budget to classed as a success according to Hollywood

Honestly, I don't get why movies and shows have to kill off a popular superhero if the actor or actress is done with the role. If I were him, I would have made sure Tony Stark was alive, but Downey wouldn't have to appear in a movie.

For example, if we are watching a Spider-Man movie and someone asks where is Ironman, people can say he's on another mission. But if a few years down the road, Downey would like to play Ironman again, it would be a very something thing to do without the need of a complicated plot to explain how he returned from the dead.

@Newseditor - Well with something like Endgame, makes sense that not everyone would make it. no victory without sacrifice. Plus give the ending more emotional weight.

If Downey ever wants to do something there are other options, like a Tony AI or the multiverse

Spock0Clock - 9/2/2020, 2:37 AM
@Newseditor - Generally I agree with you. But there is a somewhat limited bandwidth when it comes to movies where it helps to definitively set a character aside (at least for a while). You don't want audiences complaining that they want more of Iron Man instead of Eternals or whoever.

And with superheroes in a multiverse, there's basically nothing at all stopping a glorious return of a fan favorite actor anyway.

IKidYouNotMan - 9/2/2020, 3:22 AM
@Newseditor - But then there’s no closure for that character and you end up going years with event movies and crossovers having to explain why Iron Man isn’t there and that’s not fun. If they made a Secret Wars movie one day they could just pluck an old manTony Stark from a reality that decided not to pursue the time travel invention and regretted not helping, that sounds like the only acceptable way to bring him back and they don’t even have to do it because his send off in Endgame was great.

@Newseditor - why not take advantage of a situation like this to give a character an emotional send off? I mean, you aren't gonna do anything with them. And theres gonna be no logical in universe reason why the next avengers level crisis is happening without him helping.

@Newseditor -
That would be the James Bond thing and Marvel made a decision to do it a little bit differently. There will be another Iron Man but it won't be Tony Stark. Maybe it will be Morgan Stark or someone entirely different.
They are doing this in real time.

As for Downey he has earned the right to move on. He saved the day in the most spectacular fashion and gave his life, made the ultimate sacrifice play, to save the universe. I like this infinitely more than the way they did Batman, rebooting every so often with different actors but in effect telling the same story over and over again.
Knightrider
Knightrider - 9/2/2020, 2:24 AM
Yeah, his story is told.

I guess if he wanted to comeback then maybe if they do a character creating their own Iron Man suit, like hacking and stealing Tony’s tech then maybe he comes back as this new Iron Man/Woman’s AI system.

Let the guy have some distance from the role, do some other stuff, (and not be hounded about it). In a few years, he'll be back (as long as nothing unforeseen happens).

Name one blockbuster franchise where the main actor never comes back 30+ years later. Meanwhile the list of franchises where the actor does come back (or explicitly stated a desire to) is massive.

As long as there's a time stone, you can have Tony, Natasha, and Vision return for another EPIC Avengers film. You only have to wait and ask Dr. Stephen Strange nicely.
MosquitoFarmer
MosquitoFarmer - 9/2/2020, 2:37 AM
What more could we possibly ask of him. That's a long time to play a role. At any rate, I'd like to see more Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang type of movies out of him.
dracula
dracula - 9/2/2020, 2:50 AM
No need for more Tony Stark or Steve Rogers for the foreseeable future. They completed their arcs and there are a lot of other heroes. Unless they decide to reboot the MCU, in 20 or more years, I dont expect to see them in anything major
