Iron Man 2 Junket: Mickey Rourke

The acclaimed actor gave a stunning performance in the movie, but he phoned in his appearance at the junket!

Oh, Mickey. What a disappointment, man. I'm a huge fan of Mickey Rourke's acting, going back to his performance in Angel Heart, a movie that still scares the hell out of me. It saddened me to watch his career crumble and I cheered as he made a triumphant return in first Sin City and then The Wrestler. So, his involvement in Iron Man 2 was something I have been eagerly anticipating ever since he was attached to the movie. And, he doesn't disappoint. The sheer menace of his presence on screen is enough to make you feel sorry for Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). But, he doesn't just play a thug with whips. On the contrary, Whiplash is nearly as intelligent as Stark—and smarter than Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell)—and very calcuating, a much deadlier villain than Jeff Bridges' Iron Monger in Iron Man.

At the recent press junket, I was excited to hear what Mickey had to say about the movie and was expecting him to bring at least a little of the charsima that he brings to his movie roles with him, but he was barely there. Mickey had a hard time keeping his eyes open and was clearly bored, resting his head in his hands, picking his teeth with a piece of paper, holding up his sunglasses to clean them of spots...he just didn't seem to care.

The first question he was asked was whether he enjoyed his role in Iron Man 2, and he had to be prompted to give more than a one-sentence response.

"I had a lot of fun...I just woke up. Naw, it was great. I worked with some great people. This one here [gesturing to director Jon Favreau] is really easy to work with, which makes it fun. It was nice. I just came off working on a film and there was no budget. I didn't even have a chair to sit in. I remember the first day, I asked for a cappuccino and he said, 'What kind would you like?'"

Rourke shares more screen time with Rockwell than anyone else in the movie and apparently enjoyed working with the actor, but all he could muster for a comment about his co-star was an anecdote about a scene that doesn't even make the final cut.

"We had a great time. We had a lot of fun. I think we were doing this improvisation [in the movie] where I said, 'Bring me some vodka,' or 'This wine is sh*t,' and he dumped it over and said, 'Yeah, this is sh*t.'"

I ♥ Mickey Rourke! Like I said in the other article I am more psyched to see him in this movie than anyone else. The clips they show of him talking to Stark are just awesome and I get chills when he does that little laugh in the trailer. lol.

Mickey seems like a real down home person. Hes seems like the kind of guy that doesn't like talking much....Like me. But unlike me, hes a very passionate actor and I'm glad for the film's sake that Mickey is in here, and that he got the chance to experience a film of the this genre and level.

Mickey Rourke is the best thing to ever come out of my home town, well, him and Coach Pat Riley. But Rourke gets the edge because he's been in a few CBM's and he has those fingernails of death.

Haha. Mickey Rourke seems like he would be a really cool guy to work with. I'm glad he's catching breaks like he is now, because just as MF said, he seems like a very down to earth guy who is only in this because he truly loves his job.

He deserved an Oscar for his performance in The Wrestler but it's great to see him starring in a movie like this! Rourke comes across as a really laid back and cool guy - I just hope that scene he's talking about makes it onto the special features on the blu-ray! :P

As I mentioned, Rourke is an awesome villain! I'm a fan of Jeff Bridges, but he can't hold a candle to this bad boy in terms of threat level.

"picking his teeth with a piece of paper" LOL - a couple years back I think it was the Golden Globes, he was like "I'm no good at giving speeches, I wish RDJ would've given mine for me" lol. WAY before IM2.

@Brent Yeah I just saw Crazy Heart - Bridges was AMAZING in that. More his style of movie.

Can't wait... sounds amazing. Even more excited after learning they based it off Eastern Promises.

I'm happy that they're waiting until the film to reveal his armor((or so it seems)).

@Brent: I know what you mean, man. He's a great actor, and is going to be the best Russian villain ever.

That seems like the Mickey Rourke I picture in my head; an artist bored with the "artifice" of Hollywood.
