When The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen arrive in Venice to stop the Phantom from blowing up Venice, they soon realize they are too late. Bombs that have been planted all throughout the City of Water begin to go off, which makes the buildings collapse and slam into each other like dominos. The group quickly device a plan to stop the domino-like effect, by driving their automobile into the heart of the city and firing a missile. If it works correctly the buildings destroyed with the missile will stop the domino of collapsing buildings. Sawyer, Quatermain. Mina, and Grey take part in this dangerous mission, while Dr. Jekyll decides to stay behind.

It's an entertaining scene, and I give it even more credit for it's wonderful use of miniatures, by New Deal Studios, to help put it all together.

New Deal Studios: "Design, fabrication and photography of Venice miniature effects sequence: 1:5 scale stylized city of Venice with effects including radio-controlled and "endless wire" effects-rigged cars with puppets; car driving through Venice, car launch, exploding theater and sinking buildings. Fabrication and photography of 1:12 scale Tiger Bay English Wharf."

You can see all of that in the video and images below. There is also a second video, in which special effects artist Mike Joyce discusses and shows the warehouse full of miniature zepellins, that were created for the film.

The heroes of 1899 are brought to life with the help of some expensive special effects in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. From the pages of Victorian literature come Captain Nemo, Dr. Jekyll (and his alter ego Mr. Hyde), Dorian Gray, Tom Sawyer, an Invisible Man, Mina Harker (from Dracula), and the hunter Allan Quatermain (Sean Connery), all brought together to combat an evil megalomaniac. --Bret Fetzer

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was directed by Stephen. The screenplay was written by James Dale Robinson, based on Alan Moore's graphic novel. The cast included: Sean Connery, Naseeruddin Shah, Peta Wilson, Tony Curran, Stuart Townsend, Shane West, Jason Flemyng and Richard Roxburgh. With a budget of $78 million, the film grossed $179 million at the worldwide box office.

Love this movie.

I remember when I first saw this and Nemo was introduced, some idiot in the theater scoffed at the name. He thought "Nemo" had been taken from the film; Finding Nemo.

Teenagers can be so [frick]ing stupid.

Or the movie that made Sean Connery retire....the comic was so much better

When I read thatThe article was going to be about League of Extrodonary Gentlemen I thought for sure the comments would be full of people tearing it to shreds, so far I've been wrong.

Jekyll and Hyde was awesome, Dorian Grey was awesome. Nemo had mad skills and the FX were pretty decent for the time. I guess for some, seeing a film like this without familiar characters lacked appeal.

Would have enjoyed a sequel.

I remember disliking this movie, but then i realised that it's both incredibly visually amazing as well as tongue-in-cheek. It's an enjoyable movie if you consider just the most basic premise, i.e. fictional literary characters banding together to kick some ass. If you're a die-hard Moore fanatic, then of course you'll be upset.

Nemo was awesome. Naseer-uddin Shah is a legendary Indian actor, and seeing him involved with a big time Hollywood CBM like this made me giddy at the time!

I AM a die-hard Moore fanatic, but even I can appreciate a halfway decent popcorn flick like this. Sure, it was no-where near as complex or nuanced as the original work, but who cares? It was fun. Both still sit on my shelf and as far as I can tell, have yet to affect each other in any way at all.

Making Mina into a vampire was the best decision to stray from the comicbook.

@MrChuff

I thought the movie had a lot of subtle hints to the gothic film genre, especially with Hyde's transformation! I loved it.

Love that they used miniatures here!

Some of the CG in this thing was pretty damn awful.

Definitely not a straight lift from the source material.

Hyde and Nemo were the best parts of this movie. The rest just looks too clean and glossy like a high grade B movie. Still watchable and not nearly as bad as some others in the genre i.e. Schumacher's bats, Green Lantern...

I was about 12 years old when this came out and I thought it was awesome. Still one of my favorite things to quote when I do my Sean Connery impression. "The Phantom is M!"

So many people judge negatively but don't produce anything themselves.
Classic film, should be in every home library.

I thought this movie was pretty awesome. The people who don't like it are Alan Moore perfectionists. They got Sean Connery to play as Alan Quartermain who can say that isn't awesome. I really liked Dr. Jeykl and Mr. Hyde in this movie also.

AlanWarlock - 9/8/2013, 2:26 PM
Actually, "comic fanboys" are notorious for liking almost NOTHING. That being said - this movie failed on a variety of levels, though the visual effects were not one of those levels. Connery was all wrong to play Quartermain, and the need to "Americanize" the story with the insipid Shane West meant that we were never going to get a true "LoEG" film.

I loved this movie, but saw it before reading the Novel.
However, as much as I love Alan Moore there is a part of Comics that is solely passing the baton.
Some writers know this, and embrace it and others fight it or ruin it for the next generation on purpose (Grant Morrison, I'm talking about you).
I respect Moore, and his right to do what he wants with his creations, but it goes against the grain of the comic book media and will always be somewhat moribund.
