If a recent rumor is to be believed, Man-Thing will soon make his MCU debut in the upcoming Werewolf By Night Halloween Special, but the character did already appear in live-action form in a much-maligned 2005 movie from Lionsgate and "Marvel Enterprises."
The micro-budget film was... not very good (no need to be too harsh this easly in the morning), but it did boast a fairly decent creature design and some creative practical FX, and has gained a minor cult following over the years.
You will probably still struggle to find a staunch defender of Man-Thing, but it sounds like the movie may count none other than Kevin Feige among its fans.
While speaking to ComicBook, director Brett Leonard revealed that the Marvel Studios boss was "one of the greatest supporting energies" behind the project.
"He was actually one of the greatest supporting energies, because when I sent the dailies, he really loved the dailies… he loved how I was moving the camera. He was very, very helpful. He was a great guy. And he was just a sweet man and is to this day. His success is well deserved. He was a great executive to work with.”
“I have great emails from him, complimenting me on the camera movement, so I always think, 'well, there you go. I got somebody in Marvel that loved this film,'" he continued. "Because this is, again, it’s an outlier in the Marvel universe. The way it was made, the budget it was made at, how it was made, what the scripting process was, and how that changed. All of those things were unique in this film."
Was Feige just being nice? Possibly, but hey, maybe Man-Thing is worth revisiting!
The other big green fella first appeared in Savage Tales #1 back in 1971, and while the character is often accused of being a rip off of DC's Swamp-Thing, he actually made his debut a few months before the Earth Elemental. We still don't have confirmation that he'll appear in Werewolf By Night, but with Marvel Studios moving further into the supernatural realm, we do expect to see him at some point.
