Feature Opinion

There are some big things coming down the pipe for CBM (ComicBookMovie.com) to kick off 2021! There have been many changes on the backend, which only a select few are aware of, in preparation for the new feature set. The frontend changes have been pretty minimal thus far, but I'm sure you've noticed already if you're a regular visitor to the site.

The most noticeable is probably the change in how headlines are displayed in both mobile and desktop:

  • Headlines are displayed 2 across on desktop (instead of 3 across)
  • Headlines are displayed one at a time on mobile (instead of 2 across)
  • Mobile now has the ability to view headlines in a "list" layout

I've received feedback from a few users in various comment threads and I wanted to make sure I opened up the feedback to everyone. With this in mind, I have created a Twitter poll (probably our first one ever) so that everyone can vote! It seemed logical given the fact that we're heading into the United States presidential election next month.

Please also feel free to use the comment area below to leave feedback. I'll check in on the thread from time to time, but you are always welcome to tag me in any thread/comment using @NateBest.

Not a fan of the mobile layout, I have to scroll past all those articles about filmmakers wanting to have their director's cuts just to get to the good stuff.

@HannibalLecter - Same! I'm normally on mobile and it doesn't look good at all.

I'm not on Twitter, so I'll just share my thoughts here: the new format is TERRIBLE. If anything, the changes have not been minimal, they've been pretty substantial. I really do not like the large icon format, 3 is better than 2.

Additionally, I'm curious why article headlines/icons on the home page no longer reveal who wrote said article. What was the reason for removing this feature?

@HeavyMetal4Life - The author removal was for 2 reasons:

1. To get feedback and see how it fits
2. Based on site usage statistics, the author's name wasn't a deciding factor on whether or not a post was viewed. Including the author name is a somewhat *new* feature as CBM didn't do it for the first 13 years (they first appeared in the mid-2016 redesign).

While I most likely *will* bring it back, I wanted to run it for a while without, especially as I'm reworking the entire layout for individual headlines.

@NateBest - thanks for the quick reply Nate!

I'm going to throw my vote in for bringing that feature back. I honestly find it very useful and indeed do use it frequently to determine whether to view a post. And I know a lot of other people on here do just the same as me. If anything, I've visited far fewer articles since that feature was removed.

@NateBest - would 100% like the article author to be visible again. As much as I wish it didn’t factor in there are certain authors Id rather not read.

@NateBest - I'll add my vote to bringing back author names.

Why? Let me be honest: it helps guide my choice as to if to read an article or not.

Some of your authors have a good rep and so if I see an article headline which is not automatically a must-read then their byline can be the deciding factor, often because I know that author isn't given to sensationalism, or taking a whispered hint of a rumour and blowing out of proportion, or , you know, just being clickbaity.

By the same token, some CBM authors are pretty awful and as a rule I will choose not to read their article because I know from past experience they are given to hype and clickbait.

I'm sure that from a *commercial* perspective you would like every CBM reader to click into every CBM article, but I think it's also important CBM respects its readers and does its best to help them enjoy the site on each visit, and that includes helping us know which articles we might want to read and which we might want to ignore.

@CaptainAustralia - Having every user click every article would be great, but it's not realistic. *I* don't even click on every article 🙆‍♂️

BlackBolt84 - 10/20/2020, 10:28 AM
@NateBest - I absolutely will not click on Josh Wilding articles. In fact, when I would see them, I would often google for the news on another site. The new layout's removing of the author's name has actually just encouraged me not to click on any news here.

@BlackBolt84 - Same, though I can still tell what articles are his based on how stupid the headline is, i.e.

Your poll is getting wrecked on the negatives. 🤷‍♂️
