One of the great Fantastic Four members will die in January. The Fantastic Four debuted 50 years ago in the silver age of comics and made heroes what they are today.

Executive editor Tom Brevoort, who oversees the comic book, says plenty of clues have been offered during the course of writer Jonathan Hickman's run, including the current 'Three' story line:
"I think we've given plenty of hints as to who may die - perhaps too many, in that every one of our lead characters is left in a dire, life-threatening situation the month before,' Brevoort told The Associated Press. 'So, hopefully, that will help to heighten the suspense, while preserving the surprise as to which member doesn't make it out alive."
Tom Brevoort also said very clearly: "A core character from the series, whom you've seen in the [2005 and 2007] films, will be no more," he told CNN.

It won't appear on newsstands, either. 'The surprises in this issues - and what comes next - constitute one of the biggest events in Marvel history,' said David Gabriel, senior vice-president for sales and circulation at Marvel.

Jonathan Hickman has said that this plot has been here since he first pitched when he started the current Fantastic Four title:
"Everything has led to this moment," he said. "It serves the story and gets where we want for the Fantastic Four."This wasn't a case where we started with, 'Let's kill a character,' " Brevoort said."[Hickman] had this story, and at one point, he said this character will die. There was never a moment where we said it could be this one or that one. There was only one choice to us as we headed down this series of stories."

Brevoort has also said that the members death will change the Marvel Universe:
"The hook is the fact that one of the four characters will be shuffling off this mortal coil. That's really a small part," he said."What we're actually doing is completely transmogrifying the 'FF' as a thing. At the end of this story, there won't even be a book called 'Fantastic Four' anymore; there will be something new that will be interesting and exciting. Out of this moment, a new thing will be born."

"Mainstream comics have done these 'Death of ...' stories so frequently, never keeping the characters dead, so it's lost all meaning to me as a fan," said Bob Bretall of comicbookpage.com, who nevertheless said he is really enjoying the current "Fantastic Four" story arc. Look no further than the upcoming 'death of Spider-Man.' Of course, it's not the 'real' Spider-Man, it's [the alternate universe] Ultimate Spider-Man."

Comic book reader/iReporter Omekongo Dibinga is also not a fan of characters dying and coming back: "It's like a musician saying they're retiring and they keep coming back, like Jay-Z."

Hickman then stated:
"I wanted to invert [the 'Mad Men' formula], to take a book about adventure and science fiction but inject nostalgia into it. Because that is the way the book feels now, this will resonate," he said. "When you couple that with the fact that all of this was planned in advance and we're working toward a goal, I feel that we will be confident that we did a good job."It's very easy to develop cynicism about the stories we tell," Brevoort added. "The only way to combat and conquer it is to have a story that touches on the humanness of people that has emotional resonance and truth to it. The fact of death is something every human being can relate to. I would argue that a well-told story of a character's demise is not necessarily undone by them coming back later."

Brevoort has stated this:
"We've tightened the screws and had each member in a critical life-or-death situation," he said. "Once you get to [the most recent issue], you hopefully will have absolutely no idea which character will take the fall because there are dire circumstances and threats that make it unlikely that anybody will get out. It's amazing that all three get out alive."

Bretall believes it will be Johnny Storm, a.k.a. the Human Torch, since his death has not even been hinted at in previous stories. (Both the Torch and the Thing are holding down the fort at the team's Baxter Building, which the army of the Anti-priest plans to attack.)

Dibinga is betting that the Thing will be the one to perish. "He is the one who is the easiest to replace. There are not many characters with the powers of the other three," he said. "Plus, he's not a direct part of the family, so he would be the easiest to let go."
(The Thing will be featured in the Fear Itself event,so...)

Invisible Woman seemed headed for danger, having told her family that she was leaving to "referee a harmless meeting" about New Atlantis, which has turned out to be anything but. Bretall points out another clue, though: "On the cover of 'FF #1' they have three hexagons, two filled in & one clear, which I'm guessing represents Sue."

And the fearless team leader,Mr.Fantastic, is dealing with none other than the planet eater himself Galactus.

"It will come sealed in a bag," Brevoort said. "I cavalierly called it the 'death shroud.' " The black bag with the "Fantastic Four" logo and a number three has been compared --- even by Brevoort --- to the bag that carried the "Death of Superman" issue."In this modern-day internet era, it's very difficult to keep any surprise a surprise," he said. "Another predilection of our core constituency is they like to keep their books pristine. It will cause someone real pain to ruin the story and scan it."

Marvel is not telling us who will be the one to die until issue #587(January 26th),and Marvel dosn't want it any time sooner.

I think Marvel is killing off too many characters(Sabertooth,Abomination,Doc Sampson,Nightcrawler,Cable)and changing theircharacters and their universe too much(Civil War,House of M,Wolverine's memories returning,Winter Soldier's arrival, all of the Hulk's kids, actually everything involving the Hulks,etc.). I was thinking, what if this isn't really happening? What if after House of M Scarlet Witch made another new reality, but based off the old one, what if in 2011 eleven this big secret event I was reading about turns out to be the return of the Scarlet Witch and the old reality?
Anyway, I'm getting off topic. I have a feeling though that this is fake like Captain America's death, and Superman's death, plus Mr.Fantastic,The Thing, and Sue Storm have all been thought to be dead before so.

ehh they'll be back. Nobody stays dead in comics. They'll just send his mind to a alternate universe, or have him/her skipping through time, or never find the body or some BS like that. ;)

ehhh kill them all, the Fantastic 4 are so boring to me.

Glad I only follow the movies and video games. I think its stupid when they kill off a major character just for shock value.

here's how it will go:
the character will die.
not beamed into an alternate dimension or sent skipping through time. apparently, we fans are hip to that now.

but by either mystic or scientific means, the character will be resurrected after about a year and a half. maybe two.

now they just said, the FF comic is gonna be stone cold dead as a doornail dead. and i believe that. there's only gonna be three members left and they'll stick together.
the one that got killed off and then subsequently resurrected, will get his own series. or get an overhaul.

just look at Steve Rogers. he has been through so many alias' that Marvel had to kill him off. and then (duh duh....... DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) he was back. but with a whole new look.
or they could go the Jason Todd route where no one saw it coming. at least i didn't. granted i didn't read the comic. JK.
bring him back as a villain who then gets reverted into a brand new character.

now the only two characters from the FF, that i believe need an overhaul are Johnny Storm and Reed Richards. these guys are polar opposites in almost every way. Johnny bases decisions on emotion, while Reed never makes a move without logic. kinda like Spock and Kirk.
mayve Johnny will become more somber. or Reed will become more poignant.

whatever the case, i must say that i love these Marvel events and can't wait for more!!!

Do you guys remember the JLU(Justice League Unlimmited) TV series, where Flash is set to die and throw the entire DC Universe off, spirilng into Armageddon? Well, this is what will happen here. Not that it will inevitably lead to Armageddon.

Conclusion: Johnny Storm is the one to die. If it's going to be a death that's a shocker, it will be Johnny.

I hope I'm wrong.

I'm glad they're calling the final issue "3" because "3," as in dollars a month, is what I'll be saving by not buying new F.F. comics anymore until they right this wrong. I've been an avid F.F. collector since 1975 and have weathered the many ups and downs of this series but this marks a new low.

We all know the F.F. hasn't been one of Marvel's top selling titles since the 60's, 70's and early 80's but is this "Death of..." story arc the answer or is it another marketing ploy to temporarily boost sales? What purpose does it serve to undermine the continuity of the "First Family" of Marvel Comics, especially when you consider the fact that this series ushered in the "Marvel Age" of comics making it an integral part of the Marvel universe? Remember how "amazing" things went when they repeatedly screwed with Spider-Man's continuity over the past few years or the overhyped "Death of Captain America?" Pure nonsense, nothing more.

Instead of killing off a team member, which seldom works out, Marvel should invest time in improving the writing, depth, and overall art of the F.F. Perhaps a more edgy, radical, and action-packed F.F. would generate more interest and bring old and new fans back to this comic. Such an approach did wonders for the X-Men which was mediocre prior to the 70's revamp that resulted in the now classic Giant-Size X-Men #1.

Over the past several years I've watched writer after writer bury this series in the dirt by either focusing way too much on "meh" characters like Reed, Sue, Valeria, and/or Franklin, overindulging in the whole "family dynamic" thing, and/or casting off the action, intrigue, and sci-fi adventure aspect of the F.F. into the negative zone. Perfect example...The Thing. Here's a hero who ages ago could go toe-to-toe with the mightiest characters of the Marvel universe, kicked butt against credible threats, and who had enough emotional baggage to soften the hardest of hearts. Nowadays all he does is provide bad comic relief, get slapped around, occasionally dismantle some crappy robot, and/or do the heavy lifting for the rest of the team.

Want another example? Simply go back to "Civil War" to see how Marvel completely ignored a potentially compelling storyline involving The Thing. Specifically, here's a character of Jewish descent who can probably relate to discrimination, alienation, and the exploitation of a race better than anyone in the Marvel universe by virtue of his heritage and horrific accident. Armed with this knowledge Marvel brilliantly has The Thing pack his bags and make a B-line for Europe (of all places) to team-up with a Z-level group of "never-heard-of-em" superheroes instead of taking a prominent, heroic hard-line against the Superhero Registration Act.

Hey Marvel...perhaps it's time to amp up the power levels of characters like The Thing or the whole team for that matter and let them cut loose against Marvel's best and most diabolical.

While I understand change is sometimes good and that as a die-hard F.F. fan this is a tough pill to swallow. However, deep-sixing a key character never helps a title in the long-term and usually irritates fans and dilutes the series. C'mon Marvel...the F.F. deserve more respect.

Agreed! Only Uncle Ben has stayed dead. Poor guy, he never had a chance.

I say kill the Thing. There are plenty of muscled people to fill his spot. And since they've all been in the Avengers, they will probably just merge.

I think their best lineup was She-Hulk in for Ben. John Byrne really revamped that team!

Sue is the only one that makes sense to kill off... if any of the rest died there would be a funeral and it would be over... but if sue dies there is emotional attachments to shattered....

reed has been killed off and brought back once before, won't be him.

Thing just joined the New Avengers and they made a big deal about it, won't be him.

Torch's death wouldn't mean dick, won't be him.

Sue's death would have the biggest impact on everyone. It'll be her.

But who cares, whoever it is will be back in a year or so. The revolving door of death has just about killed superhoero comics for me. Its become the norm. Kill a main character every couple of months, then bring them back shortly after. what shit

dellamorte my best buddy- theyre not really members its more of a cameo typa thing. but of course you wont believe me, even though youre not reading the books, because you "just know". do us all a favor and take your own advice, "know the ins and outs" (read the books) before you go spewing bullish about them. oh and happy holidays! :)

whats this article about? the fantastic 4? sorry i just get so excited when i see my boys corndog and dellamorte (havent been on in awhile and i missed my peeps!)

anyways.... i think its gonna be johnny or sue. neither one of them really does anything too important....

but then again if doom is gonna become a member, then maybe its reed.... it doesnt seem like he would join the FF if reed was around, but if reeds dead then that opens the door for doom....

k changed my mind. its reed.

It'll be Sue, as her death would have the greatest impact. I don't think anyone would care if Torch died, and personally, I think Reed would deserve it. He's gone on faaar too long bordering the mad scientist routine and when he cloned Thor in Civil War, I formed a hate for that character that I feel will never be undone. I guess I'm saying I'd cackle with joy if the kill Reed.

Jean Grey still hasn't come back, she's been dead for years and it looks like it'll stay that way.
HotHead
HotHead - 1/5/2011, 2:04 PM
whuever dies i hope actuly stays dead like uncle ben or captain mar-vell. how come thier they only ones who stay dead??? anyway i think reed will die as punishment for cloning thor in civil war by either having ragnorock himself kill him or have odin who has been resarected as of fear itself kill him for dishonering his son. if reed died then thier a huge backlash on the states of the samertest people on earth if thats what they want.

also i hope marvel decides to keep the current god squad from chaos war minus thor(an avenger),silver surfer and galactus of course(hercules, amondous cho, sersi, venus, daimian hellstorm) as a team and give them thier own series ala gaurdians of the galaxy and give them new recruits a base ect. and bring them into the heart of the marvel universe both on earth and in the rest of the universe. that would be epic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
