DC & Marvel: Is What Is Different About The Companies Really That Important?

LEVITIKUZ looks into the Marvel & DC rivalry. Is this rivalry even that important if it makes both sides better? Is the rivalry really important if people know which heroes belong to which company and know nothing about the companies or for people to know the difference between the companies?

I was at Barnes & Noble’s; I usually go in there to buy the monthly Batman comic. There isn’t a comic shop closer so I buy it there. They usually take longer to get the comics for some reason so I waited a couple of weeks hoping they would have Batman #13. They didn’t. I went into the graphic novel section. They had a full version of Batman: Hush. I know the story of Hush and thought about getting it since I don’t own it. As I read though it, a guy saw me reading it. He walked up to me and said “Hey since you look like someone a comics fan, I got a question.” His question was, “What is the difference between DC and Marvel?” I told him that the real difference is that they are two companies. DC has Batman, Superman, and Justice League while Marvel has Spider-Man, Avengers, and X-Men. He thanked me. As he left I thought, what really is the difference between Marvel and DC? The fact they are 2 different companies? That’s it? I think as comic fans we get too hyped about Marvel vs. DC. Why? I’m going to explain why the Marvel vs. DC debate shouldn’t really exist. It’s more of the fact they are 2 different companies. Let me explain.

As a kid, I played with action figures of both Marvel and DC. Did I just have the Marvel characters stay with the Marvel characters? No and the same goes for DC. I would have Batman and Spider-Man and Wolverine and Superman and others team up. As children we don’t really care about Marvel vs. DC. Maybe it’s because we loved superheroes period. We didn’t love just Marvel superheroes or just DC superheroes but we just loved all types of superheroes. LEGO nowadays have both DC and Marvel superheroes. Not just siding with Marvel and having only Marvel or siding with DC and having only DC but they have both. As kids, we enjoyed both Marvel and DC but it seems now more people are either a Marvel fan or DC fan. Can’t you be both?

When Marvel had Namor and called him King of Atlantis, DC introduced Aquaman and called him the King of Atlantis and Aquaman became more popular. Marvel releases The Avengers on the big screen. DC starts to get their ship going announcing they are making a Justice League movie. Marvel and DC are perfect for each. They make each other better. Marvel was kicking DC’s butt in comics. DC announces The New 52 and Aquaman for many months outsold Marvel titles. AQUAMAN!!! Now Marvel announced a reboot and is having #1 edition. My point is they both are going after each other like an 8 Mile rap battle. They improve one another. DC is dominating Marvel in animation and Marvel knows it. Recently Marvel announced a couple new animated series and 2 new Iron Man animated movies. If Marvel never existed, DC couldn’t improve because they will always be dominating. If you’re always dominating, what’s the point of changing? The same can be said about if DC never existed.

Now I want to get into this summer. Everyone compared The Avengers to The Dark Knight Rises adding more fuel to the fire of this Marvel vs. DC rivalry. Why? Why would you compare those two films? One film is the beginning of something greater and having heroes team up. The other film was the ending of something great with one hero’s back against the wall. There is really nothing these films had in common and yet everyone wants to compare these films like they are similar. The only movie Marvel has put out that can be compared to The Dark Knight Rises is Spider-Man 3. Also the only movie DC has put out that can be compared to The Avengers is Watchmen. So why compare those films.

What I’m trying to say is what is more important; for people to know the heroes in each company or for people to know the difference between the companies? I wrote a story on how a New Yorker film critic, David Denby criticized both The Dark Knight Trilogy and The Avengers. He didn’t go after Marvel or DC but superheroes. That’s what Batman, Superman, Spider-Man and the rest of them are. Superheroes. They have other titles but that’s the only one that should be important.

I hope you guys get what I’m trying to say in this reflection. What are your thoughts and feelings about this? Comment below. Peace.

Well said bro. I'll admit, sometimes I get caught up in the battle and for awhile I sometimes caused it because I've grown up a Marvel fan and read Marvel comics. Never cared for DC. For the past couple months, I've been respecting DC more. Particularly, The Flash. I still have no respect for Aquaman, sorry :/ You bring up a valid point and I think people should start to respect both, instead of bashing one company.

Good stuff Levi, personally I prefer Marvel over DC but that will never lead me to diss DC characters or their fans.

Fantastic stuff man you've really knocked it out of the park with this there isn't really much difference between them one company can't exist without the other they both are the backbone of the entire industry the only differences between them is characters and what you prefer more. I am a massive fan of both I like marvel just a little bit more than dc but only because I like a few more marvel characters than dc characters heck in my top 15 superheroes 8 are marvel 7 are dc.

I understand what you're saying, but they are still two different companies. Like McDonald's and Burger King.

Thankfully it's not like Barnes & Noble and Borders.

B&N has monopolized Tampa's bookstores, and their selection is ATROCIOUS. Since they forced Borders to fold, their standard has all but diminished. You'll find more dvds, cds, board games, action figures, puzzles, and diaries, than you will books.... at least in my town.

Rivalry is what keeps the two thriving.

Great article man.

I've always looked at it like this. DC has the classics. DC characters tend to be a little more over the top and more powerful. The DC universe as a whole seems to be a little more slanted toward the "nerdy" side. (I say nerdy with nothing but love, because i am as big a nerd as you'll find.)

Marvel tends to be a LITTLE more on the grounded side, but not much because they certainly are still completely outlandish. I think what i mean by grounded is that they have a whole lot more street level heroes and villains that are popular than DC. To the point where Batman doesnt even feel like a DC character. He would fit in with the likes of Moon Knight, Spidey, Daredevil, Punisher and all of the Marvel Knights way more than anyone in DC.

That is how i see it.

All the other things that we see people on this site arguing about is idiotic and trivial. How many times have we seen someone complain about one company ripping off another? Its annoying because any actual fan can tell you that both companies have ripped each other off in the past, whether its characters or stories, they are both guilty. Any actual fan can also give examples of both companies doing it.

At the end of the day, i enjoy a good story. I read comics for the story. Anyone who is so biased that they refuse to read anything from one company or the other is just depriving themselves of good stories. Because lets face it, whether you are complete Marvel Zombie, or a huge DC fanatic, it is nothing short of ignorant to say that the other company hasnt done any stories that you would like. In fact, after all these years and thousands of stories, its impossible.

Marvelites need to read DC's 12 issue miniseries Justice.

DC fans need to read Marvel's Earth X.

I guarantee neither will be disappointed.

Great read man! If only some people would have that mentality of a child who doesn't see companies, but rather the interesting and yet sometimes outlandish characters we grew up with. JL vs Av, Bats vs Iron Man, who cares? I think it's simply increable that these guys are up on the big screen.

Another great vist the Lounge!

I'm a crew trainer at a McD directly across the street from BK. They're kind of pathetic in their attempts to subvert McD - I'd almost feel sorry for the people who worked there if it looked like they gave a damn.

But back to Marvel/DC... I see them as choices, and expanded ones at that. Hawkeye might be a slight rip-off of Green Arrow, but Green Arrow was a big rip-off of Batman. The characters go in their own directions though, and that is what makes them readable and enjoyable. If everyone was doing the same thing, representing the same ideals, fighting the same problems... it would be dull.

I like that Iron Man is a douche with billions at his disposal, and is constantly justifiably under media and government scrutiny. I like that Spider-man is barely making ends meet trying to balance his income, personal life, and superhero life together. I like that Green Arrow is a hypocrite who is constantly preaching against the mistakes he's made. I like that Zatanna had a hard time trusting herself to get on the right track after using her magic for questionable purposes.

I see DC and Marvel as a game of pong.

The fact is, as long as these two companies exist, it's always going to be a rivalry between them and their opposing fanbase. It's like trying to stop the rivalry between Yankees and Red Sox fans. :-).

But all in all, I tend to lean more to Marvel. I grew on DC with Superman, Batman, and the Flash, it wasn't until I started growing up where I geared towards the side of Marvel Comics. their characters began to be much more interesting and gravitative because of their more humanizing approach to the characters.

It all depends on levels of maturity. I like the characters DC has to offer more, but that doesn't mean i'm DC exclusive. Same goes for my friend, only he really likes Marvel's character roster. We both get along really well.
Then you have immature fanboys on websites like this. A great accomplished actor feels that the CBM they were in wasn't good, and they start spewing hate over that actor. Real shame.
