EDITORIAL: The Future Of The MCU Part II: Joss Whedon's Phase Two

I've worked pretty hard on this and I think you guys will find it worth reading. So give it a try! In this article I will give my opinions on a lot of recently announced things concerning The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

As I write this I am watching Joss Whedon’s commentary of The Avengers and I am reminded what an absolute genius he is. Joss Whedon has a great understanding of not just what audiences like to see but what us fans want to see. Joss himself is quite a geek and that is mostly why he makes us all so happy. But I’m sure all of you already know this. Now on to the ranting!

My Opinion On Him Being The Godfather Of Phase 2:

Joss in a way also looked after Phase One. Kevin and him were old friends back when Kevin was only working at marvel and when Marvel became its own thing and Kevin became president he went to Joss and asked if he had the opportunity to do something like this how would he tackle it? So Joss was part of it from the start but not exactly a “godfather.” But looking at what we have from phase two so far is this: The Mandarin. How could he let this happen? Well when explaining his real occupation Whedon said that he just got to review the scripts and talk with the directors. That being said this is probably the best time to give my opinion on The Mandarin and more generally Iron Man 3. I think Iron Man 3 was a very good film. It showed exactly what Captain America foretold in The Avengers:

But here’s my Mandarin theory: Marvel didn’t have to slam it in our faces. They endorsed and endorsed and endorsed some more about it until the thing we all wanted to see most was how epic The Mandarin was going to be. Then he turned out to be a British drug addict. And to make it worse for me one of my idiot friends kept going around and saying “I love how the guy we all think is the bad guy is actually a British drug addict.” But anyway I think Joss had nothing to do with the advertising so we shouldn’t blame him. Now what I think is going to reflect from Joss and onto phase two is the humor.

On The Next Hulk Film:

I had to put something in here about Hulk. Countless times some very good filmmakers have tried very hard to give the hulk some justice in a live action film and the product has always been very bad… with the exception of The Avengers. The reason being that both Joss Whedon and Mark Ruffalo had an excellent understanding of him: a creature that is tremendously misunderstood by everyone around him. Even in The Incredible Hulk Ed Norton’s Bruce Banner dedicated his life to getting rid of him. At the end of the film though Banner realizes that this monster has a will. The Hulk is a person like everyone else. He has feelings. One of those is rage but when you think about it it’s easy to understand why he “hulks out.” Joss Whedon structured the Hulk’s first scene by putting the weakest character (Black Widow) in a dangerous poorly lighted part of the helecarrier (that is falling from the sky) instead of having a bunch of bullies beat him up. The way Joss explained it was that there were two Hulks in The Avengers, the Hulk that he involuntarily lets out and the Hulk that he lets out. Yes that can be compared with Grey Hulk and Green Hulk. Anyway the same thing happened in The Incredible Hulk. He chose to let him out and he became the hero we all love. So if there’s anyone who could direct possibly the best Hulk movie ever it would be my boy Joss Whedon.

On Scarlett Witch And Quicksilver:

When I heard the news about the siblings’ part in what was then referred to The Avengers 2 I was pleasantly surprised. I always had a great respect for Quicksilver and I liked Scarlett Witch. Joss understood that their powers were very visual so I thought that they would be a great addition to the team. Then I thought “well, I guess they could be like aliens that warn The Avengers of Thanos or something” Then last Saturday at about 8:30 I was geeking out about The Avengers: Age of Ultron and I had to rethink my standpoint on the situation. And that lead me to my next brilliant theory.

How Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Could Explain Why The Twins Are In Age Of Ultron:

This will only be short but I just wanted all of your opinions on this. Ok so AOS will be about the agents tracking down random superheroes so I’m thinking: Why can’t they tie in the TV show with the film (and vice versa) by having the agents discover the twins. That would also let the twins have knowledge of Coulson’s resurrection and therefore open up a huge window of opportunity for some emotional interaction in The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

On Hank Pym Not Being In The Avengers: Age Of Ultron:
I really don’t have a problem with that. I mean sure it would be nice to see that happen but I trust Whedon. I think after Tony Stark decided that now was a good time to take out his arch reactor (instead of a few years ago when it almost killed him) he wanted to still keep the world safe so he helped S.H.I.E.L.D. to built Ultron. People are already praising his take on the menacing machine that is Ultron and I think we should see Edgar Wright’s take on Ant Man (that he’s been preparing for seven years) before Joss Whedon’s. Some day though my friends we will see Ant Man fighting alongside Earth’s (other) mightiest heroes.

On “Age Of Ultron”:

I personally love Ultron. He’s known as one of the most dangerous villains in the marvel universe. But even I didn’t see this coming. A few months ago I battling it out with myself on who would be the villain of The Avengers Sequel. At that time Marvel was offering a deal to Fox to give them more time on their Daredevil reboot in exchange for the rights to Galactus and Silver Sufer. So I thought “If this works out where will Thanos fit in?” Also at that time I was pretty sure that Ultron would be the appropriate villain to put in the avengers sequel. But then again everyone else believed that Thanos was going to be the villain of phase two and not just the whole mastermind behind all of the MCU. So long story short I gave up on Ultron being in phase two. You can compare that to how I gave up on Black Panther being Marvel’s mystery movie. In both circumstances I just had to keep calm and wait for phase three. Because there was no way that marvel was gonna let Black Panther and Ultron not be somewhere in there. So that was my frame of mind on Saturday. Then BOOM! It hit all of us and we all had to rethink this. The result was like twenty editorials on the SAME EXACT THING: How Pym doesn’t need to be in there and how Pym does need to be in there. Needless to say I didn’t read any of them. So anyway I am super excited to see Joss Whedon’s take on Ultron and how he will tear The Avengers apart (literally and figuratively).

P.S. I am glad Marvel didn’t use “Rise of Ultron” because I hear “Rise of the Rising Risers” is coming soon.

What I Would Like To See In The Avengers: Age Of Ultron:

First off I would like to see Ultron have battles with ALL The Avengers especially Thor and the twins. I would also love to see Winter Soldier, Falcon and Iron Patriot join the team as minor characters. As far as deaths I think Iron Man’s time has come. The thing that I’ve realized about phase two is this: Phase One was about these heroes being created and finding out who they were destined to be and Phase Two is about them facing tragedy, hardships, and most importantly death. Tony Stark was faced with protecting the people he loved by destroying the monstrosity (that has many meanings) that he created. Thor will have to trust his brother this November in journeying to Swaltlehiem leading to Loki’s redemption and probable death. Captain America will question who’s on his side and who is working with the enemy and eventually face his greatest fear: losing Bucky again. And last but not least The Avengers will face their greatest challenge yet while struggling to remain a team. People will die. But from the ashes our greatest guardians will step forth and rise to protect us in their darkest hour.

So that’s pretty much it folks. If you agreed with most of it and think its front page worthy please click the thumbs up button and leave your thoughts bellow. Avengers72 out.

I'm a big fan of Joss. Love his writing style and understanding of the characters and world. He is a great storyteller.

However, if I admit he isn't the most visually exciting as a director. He doesn't a style. Some directors you can look at one scene - or even one shot - of their film and you can tell its them. Guilermo Del Toro, Terry Gilliam even Alfonso Curon have this ability. Whedon's stuff just looks a bit safe and bland in comparison. But I just think this is the Marvel Studios way so far. Hopefully T:TDW and Alan Taylor might change this.

Really good article. Can tell you spent some time on it.

The crazy thing about Iron Man 3 is that even with them making Killian the big baddie, they still could of kept the CB Mandarin! Think about it: Make i that the Mandarin is a real terrorist, but his Ten Ring organization is small, and hasn't made a dent in achieving his goals. Killian offers him a chance to "step up into the big leagues" if you will, and basically gives the Mandarin a bigger platform to become a well-known threat. You can still have Killian be the one pulling all of the strings, but you also could have kept the Mandarin as an actual threat.

Still enjoyed IM3, but agree with you. Could've been better.
