In the most recent installment of Marvel vs. DC, Marvel triumphed yet again -- in softball, that is! The Mighty Marvelites kept their rivals at bay, downing them 10-6 yesterday.
Team Marvel displayed power, defense, fervor and chemistry in their big win.
After two consecutive singles to lead off the game, Mike Bagu stroked a double that began Marvel's offensive merry-go-round. Later, Eric Feitelson delivered a crushing grand slam after Tara Fenton, Vrej Barghamian and Mark Beazley set the table with base hits to load the bases. Refusing to be outshone, Richie Waite hit a towering shot in the very next at bat to put Marvel way ahead 7-1.
With the score 7-2, Waite was called in from his left field perch to pitch in relief. Despite a mini-comeback, he kept the DC bats mostly quiet. Marvel's fielding and defense held tight in the final innings, with key plays from second basewoman Judith Stephens and outfielder Peter Lee (who also provided two clean singles late in the game).
Recently acquired newcomer and slick fielder Ron Stern added two hits to the Marvel total and Nelson Ribeiro played gritty defense despite multiple broken toes.
One of the most important defensive plays of the game came on a hot shot hit to Barghamian at shortstop. He knocked it down and delivered a strike to home, gunning down a DC runner trying to score from third.
Alas, Marvel dashed DC's hopes of a full comeback for the second straight year.
