There has not been a peep in a long time about the rumored but never confirmed movie adaptation of Neil Gaimen's "Sandman". Although the likelyhood of ever seeing Morpheus grace the big screen is down to weather rights holders DC ever want it to, fans have been screaming for a Sandman movie and a Death movie for a long time now.

Even if a movie does go into production, who is the best person to bring the amazing world of Sandman to the screen?

Gaimen had this to say when he spoke to MTV...

“I think it’s probably some kid who, right now, is around 26-years-old,” Gaiman said in an interview with Jam! Showbiz. “He may or may not have directed his first movie, but he loves ‘Sandman’ and he has the same amount of dedication to the material that (director) Peter Jackson had to ‘Lord of the Rings’ and Sam Rami had to ‘Spider-Man.’”

“It’s somebody who knows that there’s this thing they love and they have a responsibility to the world get it right and not f— it up,” he added.

However, that doesn’t mean Gaiman isn’t understanding when it comes to certain changes necessary for a proper translation of literature to film.

“They’re also not scared of changing the things about it that are not cinematic into things that are cinema,” said Gaiman. “Otherwise you end up with something like the ‘Sin City’ movie, where you’d rather read the comic. I remember watching that and thinking, ‘I think I prefer these characters better when Frank [Miller] draws them.’”

Sandman is by far the best comic i have ever read so i really want to see a movie..done right! Gaimen has said before if a movie gets made he would be very hands on about it so lets hope sticks to that.

SirPrize - Burton?!! Oh HELL no!!!! My vote goes for Alex Proyas all the way! He's got a much more darker and grittier vision - much better than the bubblegum world that Burton lives in and perfect for 'Sandman'!

Hey there, first time posting, but loooong time fan of this site. I agree, Sandman is on the same line as Watchmen, but I bet the movie would turn out the same (people thinking it will dominate the world only to be popular by a fraction).

Gaiman is such an ASS!!! I mean, Roar, you knew posting this that you'd get this response from SOMEONE right? The dude just dissed the best comic book adapted movie ever made. He just set all of us back in saying that. All of us comic book fans that actually WANT to see our favorite comic books done justice on the big screen as much as Sin City was!!! No i wouldn't rather just read the comic, i'd like both, thank you!!!

was it necessary to take a shot at sin city?

@ Shaman
I completely agree. The two most faithful adaptations are probably Sin City and 300 and I've seen them both several times, but I've read the graphic novels as well and the movies and comics equally.

He's working on "Death: the High Cost of Living" now. It is going to be called "Death and Me" and Gaiman is going to direct it himself.

haha, yeah the Sin City remark was a strange one. I guess hes just not that into such literal translations. I dont agree with him but i know where hes coming from. Some people think that if all your doing is plastering the comic onto the screen then whats the point?

Who could play SANDMAN though???? : /
Shaman
Shaman - 6/26/2009, 11:06 AM
Well yeah Roar, that is a good point too. I'd say... if making the film exactly like the comic but in more of a bland way, then there would be no point. But that's not really what Sin City was. It felt the same yet different. It was a whole new experience watching the same material on screen as it was to read the comic. Both were OUTSTANDING experiences and i can only hope the same for Sandman even though i never read the series.

As did i ElBEaster, as did i :))

LEEE- Sam Worthington of course LMFAO!!! :P

I think Doug Jones would make a decent Morpheus.

As for Gaiman's comments about the Sin City film... I can't shortfall the guy on personal taste. He's just trying to make a simple statement of fact: Not all comic book/story ideas transfer well to film. Zack Penn made a similiar comment not to long ago about the upcoming Avengers movie. If you villify these guys because of stating fact, you're being more than a little unfair.
I liked the Sin City movie as much as the next guy, but I CAN honestly say that I enjoyed the books even more. Is that bad?

Doug Jones! Very interesting...

Heres my ideas.

I have since changed my mind a bit about Depp and Knightly..i still think they would do a good job, but there are probably better people for those roles out there..

ElBeaster - 6/26/2009, 11:33 AM
I don't think anyone could properly portray any of the Endless(except for Destruction maybe). So, I have no idea who should play any of them.

It would be cooler if Gaiman teamed up with Guillermo del Toro. Gaiman visited the set of Hellboy II to get directing tips from del Toro for Death and Me. So, it would be more likely for them to work together.

selinakyle - 6/26/2009, 11:36 AM
el beaster i have to agree with you on Del Toro. Now that i can get on board with.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 6/26/2009, 11:53 AM
Well, hes not really saying that in fairness! He never said he didnt like Sin City, only that he preferred the comic, and he only said that to illustrate that he wouldnt mind some liberties taken for a movie. Personally i kinda enjoyed the movie Sin City more than the comics but there u go! Different strokes. I agree with his about Sandman though, there are some things in those comics that would have to be altered for an movie. The whole first story arc ending for one! I doubt anyone wants to see a movie end with Dream and Death feeding pidgeons on a bench!
loganoneil
loganoneil - 6/26/2009, 12:02 PM
Ror - I think that woud be a COOL end for the film! As we've discuss this on your other thread, maybe a feature film isn't the way to go with this - it's too dense in material (it'd be like that crappy 'Dune' film in the 80's with Kyle MacLachlan - 50 pounds of [excrement] in a 5-pound bag!). Maybe the way to go with this would be a television series (kinda' like 'True Blood', 'Rome', 'Primeval' or 'Breaking Bad'). Give it the space it needs to really 'live and breath'... I know I'D tune in every week to watch it!

Good point adamant, the fact that some aspects of comic books might not translate well to film is true. And yes, Gaimen is alowed his preferences BUT, how long and hard have we comic book fans fought over the fact that we wished the studios producing comic book movies to stay closer to the source material and not bastardise the very thing we are a fan of and been wanting to see on the big screen??? For the first time in History, they succeeded in correctly adapting a comic book on to film with Sin City and to have not only a professional of the comic book industry but one of the most sought after writers of that industry actually say that Sin City did the opposite is more than disapointingly gutwrenching!!! In all honesty, i feel betrayed. After saying that, i wouldn't be surprised that his Sandman movie flops and that he falls from his pedastal once in his life to realise that the oh so great and magical Neil Gaimen was damn wrong. IMO, whether the comic was more entertaining than the film is actually beside the point. Regardless of preferences, "the best adaptation from comic book to film" should be concidered a blueprint with room for imporvement rather than to be sneered at.

I know you'll say he didn't sneer at it Roar, but he just did it with tact is all. A man in his position shouldn't say such destructive things. Let's all read the book instead of watching the film. That IS setting us back. It's sounds the same to me as hearing a black man say "when we were slaves, at least we didn't have to pay the bills." I might be overdramatising this but... it hurt.
loganoneil
loganoneil - 6/26/2009, 12:13 PM
Shaman - my point EXACTLY! That's why I say something this dense and rich wouldn't fit into the standard 'commercial' 2-hour movie slot. In order to do it true justice, you'd either have to go 'Lord of the Rings' with it (time-wise, which not too many movie studios would consider), or make it a cable TV series.
Shaman
Shaman - 6/26/2009, 12:15 PM
Yes, i'd agree with the Sandman series hands down. But IMO, Sin City fit perfectly in a film as if Frank Miller intended it from the moment he drew the first sketch of his idea.
selinakyle
selinakyle - 6/26/2009, 12:25 PM
You know...i mean..if he had said "The Spirit" instead of sin city then i wouldn't be so irritated.
Shaman

TOTALLY!!! Now that argument would have sounded a little less offensive and a hell of a lot more accurate!!!
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 6/26/2009, 12:32 PM
Hey its possible he was sneering, maybe he has issues with Rodriguez and wanted to take a pot shot! Who knows.

loganoneil a series would definitely be the way to go, but i doubt it will happen. If a movie doesn't try to cram too much in it should be ok. And yeah, that bench ending would actually be pretty cool now that i think about it! But theres no way they would do it.

I really like the Del torro idea, but he's got so much on his plate already. I'd hate to have to wait that long to see a sandman movie.
That said I think Tim Burton would do well, yet Gaimen seems to want a younger director, so who knows.

David Lynch or Cronenberg.
ElBeaster
ElBeaster - 6/26/2009, 1:18 PM
I actually wouldn't mind waiting years for it to be made so that Del Toro could helm the project. At least that way I'd know that it is going to be done right. Plus I think the longer we wait, the better technology will get and then they will be better able to capture the true essence of The Sandman on film.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 6/26/2009, 1:37 PM
Del Toro would be good...Lynch or Cronenberg i would kill to see! But my pic would be Darren Aronofsky. He wrote and would have directed an apparently amazing script for Batman, but it was far too dark. Give him Sandman! Plus he can do no wrong in my eyes. I used to think he was all quirks and oddities until i saw The Wrestler. He can bring the heart too.

Hell yes!!!!

This is THE movie I want to see. i am almost religious about this series. This is the one that i would be the most worried about translating to film. I'm still waiting for his Death and Me movie.

@Shaman. Cassel would have been good a few years back, but now he doesn't look the part anymore.

I kinda agree with him on Sin City, I too would rather have reread the comics, but thats just me, my opinion.

I hope we get a series of Endless movies, I really want a Death movie, she is in my top 5 comic characters

1)Cable
2)Deathstroke
3)Death
4)Captain Mar-Vell
5)Bane/ Mr. Sinister (Can't decide)
6)Batman
7)Wonder Woman
8)Gwen Stacey(beilive it or not)
9)Morpheus
10)Dick Grayson
