Every year, about this time, we always here about which television series may or may not be coming back for another season. Some of them are freshman series and some are veteran shows with proven tack record. TV Guide has put together a list of shows that are skating on thin ice and may be headed for the chopping block. Their list consists of 25 shows, but I've pulled out a few that some of us geeks and fans may be upset to see go.
Chaos (CBS)
Starring Eric Close, James Murray, Kurtwood Smith, Freddie Rodriguez, Tim Blake Nelson
Despite its great and watchable cast, this series never took hold with fans. It's "lighter" tone is both good and bad in that it offers up something different for the CBS core audience, but that is also the problem for this series.
Chuck (NBC)
Starring Zachery Levi, Yvonne Strahovski, Adam Baldwin, Ryan McPartlin, Sarah Lancaster, Scott Krinsky
This geek favorite has been on the bubble for several years now and it's rather fierce and ever-faithful viewers have saved the show before. But if you take away that central group, the series could be in trouble.
CSI: NY (CBS)
Starring Gary Sinise, Carmine Giovinazzo, Eddie Cahill, Hill Harper
When CBS moved this veteran crime drama to Friday nights, mainly as a lead in to the new (an now bonafide hit
Blue Bloods), no one knew the effect it would have on the show.
Blue Bloods has continually drawn a bigger audience since the move. Having said that, TV Guide reports that
CSI: NY still pulls in big numbers, but CBS can be quite ruthless and the series could still be on the block.
The Event (NBC)
Starring Jason Ritter, Sarah Roemer, Zeljko Ivanek, Blair Underwood, Laura Innes, Lisa Vidal, Ian Anthony Dale
Did anyone else get really tired of the promotional ads for this show? The series opener for this show pulled in 11 million viewers, which is great. It's everything after that that has been the issue. Despite it's mysterious premise (which worked very well for
Lost), viewers just can't get behind this series. The show took a break to re-evaluate and ever since then, the viewership has been on a steady decline.
Human Target(FOX)
Starring Mark Valley, Chi McBride, Jackie Earl Haley
Based of the graphic novel of the same name, this series offers up a new spin on the typical television series. The ratings for the series aren't terrible and in comparison to the other "superhero" shows that already got the ax or are on the bubble (
No Ordinary Family and
The Cape), it's actually a fun show to watch. But, the problem with this show is that the "buzz" around it never took off and like
The Event, the creative hiatus did nothing to pull viewers back in to the series.
Law & Order: Los Angeles (NBC)
Starring Terrence Howard, Alfred Molina, Tamlyn Tomita, Skeet Ulrich, Rachel Ticotin
One of about 150
Law and Order shows on television right now, this is more than likely the least watched and despite it's all star cast, which just added
Law & Order vet Alana de la Garza, things can't seem to get moving for the newest series in the family. A creative re-launch for the show, which killed of Ulrich's character, did little to help, drawing in only 5.4 million viewers.
Lie to Me (FOX)
Starring Tim Roth, Kelli Williams, Brendan Hines, Mekhi Phifer, Monica Raymond
This series, despite its refreshing premise and great writing, has been on the proverbial bubble for the past two seasons, which shows how much FOX likes the show, having saved it twice. But the show continues to pull in low ratings, which are consistently below the 6 million mark. FOX is looking to air repeats of the series later this summer, hoping that will help improve it's ratings.
Nikita (The CW)
Starring Maggie Q, Shane West, Lyndsy Fonseca, Aaron Stanford, Tiffany Hines
Probably one of the best acted series on The CW (I know, I know...not hard to do), this series seems rather out of place on the network and therein lies the problem. The
Vampire Diaries lead-in is constantly pulling in higher ratings than other CW staples like
90210, Gossip Girl and
One Tree Hill. How about instead of pulling the show, they expand on the idea of a more grown-up CW. Obviously, there is a market for it on the network.
No Ordinary Family (ABC)
Starring Michael Chicklis, Julie Benz, Jimmy Bennett, Kat Panabaker
TV Guide says there is really no good news here and that the show has pretty much gone the way of the buffalo. ABC was hoping to capture the audience that once made the NBC hit
Heroes so popular, but it was just never able to do so. The two main actors, Chiklis and Benz, have already moved on to each star in a new pilot, both of which are under consideration for this fall.
Rules of Engagement (CBS)
Starring Patrick Warburton, David Spade, Megyn Price, Olliver Hudson, Bianca Kajlich
This series has had some great ratings and only thrived once in moved in as the follow up to the
Big Bang Theory. But it's *.6 million viewers is an all-time low for the show. The saving grace for this show is actually Charlie Sheen. Now that he is gone from the show, CBS is struggling to find a direction for
Two and a Half Men, so if they can't figure out what to do there,
Rules could be the show to take its spot.
V(ABC)
Starring Morena Baccarin, Scott Wolf, Laura Vandervoort, Logan Huffman, Joel Gretsch
This sci-fi remake started off with a bang, raking in about 14 million viewers for the the series premier. However, at the end of season two, just 5.5 million people tuned in to watch the season finale. The gory and twist-filled season finale was, according to TV Guide, was the series best effort to date and ended in quite a cliff hanger. But it may have been too little, too late for this series.
One Tree Hill (The CW)
Starring James Lafferty, Bethany Joy Galeotti, Sophia Bush, Lee Norris
The series is now eight seasons old and for many of those, it has spent them on the bubble, consistently under the watchful eye of executives. It has lost its media draw, unlike its sister shows
Gossip Girl and
Vampire Diaries. There are several new pilots in the wings at The CW, just waiting to fill this time slot and I say it's time to give them a shot.
I'll admit that I am not a huge watcher of much television, so I can't say I'd be devastated these series going away. But it's a shame to see so many "geek" shows going away. I'm not sure if this tells us that the sc-fi/comic book field is losing its appeal in the television world or not. Now that shows like
Smallville are headed out and shows like
Lost have ended, we'll see if the trend continues.
What say you geeks? Are you disappointed by any of these shows being cancelled? Either way, it may be too late to do much about it for some of them. Be sure to follow the link below to see the other series that may be cancelled.
