X-Men 3 Director Brett Ratner Steps Down As Oscar Producer, Pens Letter Of Apology

Not FOR X3..yet anyway! But Ratner is discussed so much here on CBM after his work on that movie and comments on the fan community in general afterwards that we felt this would be of interest..

To say that director Brett Ratner is unpopular here on CBM is something of an understatement. I don't think that it's even the fact that his work on the third X-Men movie was THAT bad as it is his attitude in general-insulting what he considers the "fanboys" that criticized X3. He basically just seems to be, well, an asshat. The Tower Heist director did nothing to change that perception when he rammed both feet straight down his gob earlier this week. First in response to a passage in Olivia Munn's book that describes a run in with Ratner he claimed to have "banged" her and then forgot who she was. He later went back on this, simply claiming that "she was hot". Then it got even worse as when asked about his directorial style in an interview he said "rehearsal is for fags". And now after coming under fire from all directions he has unsurprisingly stepped down as the producer of the Academy Awards next year and offered this grovelling apology..

Dear Colleagues,
Over the last few days, I’ve gotten a well-deserved earful from many of the people I admire most in this industry expressing their outrage and disappointment over the hurtful and stupid things I said in a number of recent media appearances. To them, and to everyone I’ve hurt and offended, I’d like to apologize publicly and unreservedly.

As difficult as the last few days have been for me, they cannot compare to the experience of any young man or woman who has been the target of offensive slurs or derogatory comments. And they pale in comparison to what any gay, lesbian, or transgender individual must deal with as they confront the many inequalities that continue to plague our world.

So many artists and craftspeople in our business are members of the LGBT community, and it pains me deeply that I may have hurt them. I should have known this all along, but at least I know it now: words do matter. Having love in your heart doesn’t count for much if what comes out of your mouth is ugly and bigoted. With this in mind, and to all those who understandably feel that apologies are not enough, please know that I will be taking real action over the coming weeks and months in an effort to do everything I can both professionally and personally to help stamp out the kind of thoughtless bigotry I’ve so foolishly perpetuated.

As a first step, I called Tom Sherak this morning and resigned as a producer of the 84th Academy Awards telecast. Being asked to help put on the Oscar show was the proudest moment of my career. But as painful as this may be for me, it would be worse if my association with the show were to be a distraction from the Academy and the high ideals it represents.

I am grateful to GLAAD for engaging me in a dialogue about what we can do together to increase awareness of the important and troubling issues this episode has raised and I look forward to working with them. I am incredibly lucky to have a career in this business that I love with all of my heart and to be able to work alongside so many of my heroes. I deeply regret my actions and I am determined to learn from this experience.

Sincerely,

Brett Ratner

I don't know about you guys, but I think I might actually respect him even LESS after that. As well as maybe feel a teeny bit sorry for the gobshite. What do you guys think?

The words Oscar and X-men 3 should never be said in the same sentence.

This is the stupidest thing ever. -_- The f-word he used has a completely different meaning these days. Lots of people use it. I don't even know why homosexuals get offended. I personally don't see the need for him to apologize. Eventually everyone will realize that the meaning has changed over the years. Everything has its process i guess.

Like geoff said, he should apologize for X3, now that's something to apologize about!

Why is he even producing the Academy Awards? Has he won any? I personally don't think he is qualified for the job.

Agreed, he should apologize for X3. But it's a good thing he stepped down. He would have made it to where every host had a death scene.

[frick] you Ratner, Who said it was a good idea to kill of or "cure" all the mutants so the only way to do another movie was to go in the past and do a first class movie. What a dick.

@MrEko - agreed - even tho X-3 wasn't as great as it should've been, i hate his attitude towards film making and the way he seems to treat people the most

@OtakuPapi You say ANYTHING derogatory about ANY group of people, and you SHOULD be jumped on. That's how we stopped the world from being RUN by douchecanoes like Ratner and, I imagine, you.

@empressSkeith - I completely disagree. This country is supposed to be about freedom of speech. Let anyone say anything about anyone.
The true test is what society embraces. Who cares what he says? He's allowed his opinion. If you disagree with his opinion, as I do, stop attending his movies. This diminishes his demand and he eventually fades away.
He's a douche on so many levels, that would be better for everyone anyway. If anything, he should step down from directing. But attacking anyone's freedom of speech eventually hurts everyone.

What a douchebag and horrible film maker he is. But in spite of all that, let's face it. he came out and apologized for saying those terrible things. Now yes, we could all sit here all day and question whether the apology is sincere or just a way to make himself look good. But he did write an apology. So let's all put aside that [frick]ed up X-Men: The Last Stand, and try to accept his apology.
Shadowelfz
Shadowelfz - 11/8/2011, 8:14 PM
I bet his publicist wrote that up. Every time I think this guy cant get any more douchier he does.
ironpool007
ironpool007 - 11/8/2011, 8:19 PM
@MovieTheaterLad: I agree with you, but a lot of people are gonna come out and question him on here, and start sayin g stuff about how he should apologize for X3. I'm just asking those people not to do that, because ultimate the fact that he apologized to the gay community is far importtant than apologizing for an unpoplular movie he made.
DarthTesla
DarthTesla - 11/8/2011, 8:20 PM
You know, most of these celebrities-that-[frick]-up-horribly-and-publicly almost immediately issue public apologies. Not because they mean it, but because their publicist told them to do so.

It's nice that they do apologize, but that doesn't mean that Mel Gibson doesn't hate Jews and Brett Ratner isn't a scumbag.

You would think an intelligent person in the public eye would know better than to say some ignorant shit so passingly and in front of a crowd of people.

Ratner's a dickhead. In my opinion.
JULEZ13
JULEZ13 - 11/8/2011, 8:24 PM
@BaneKill: You obviously missed my point. Many different words change in definition with every new generation. The word gay used to mean happy, now it's used to describe homosexuals. Same as with the word f**. It, like many other words has a double meaning. It is a hateful slur to homosexuals, but not always. Today lots of people use that word to describe someone that they feel is stupid or makes no sense. Its just an expression. Just like when people say something is gay. Do they really mean that thing or person is a homosexual, no. They are just saying they don't like it. It has nothing to do with sexual preference. So in reality, using the word in this context is not homophobic at all. Its a form of expression. You may not agree with that form of expression, but not everyone is the same.

Brett Ratner was wrong mainly because he talked that way to the media. It is unprofessional to use slang or street language on TV, or whatever it was showed on, especially when its attached to something so big as the Academy Awards.
