We recently learned that 20th Century Studios and Hulu are developing a new Alien movie with Fede Alvarez (Don't Breathe; Evil Dead) on board to write and direct, and we may now have an idea of when and where the project will enter production.

According to a listing on ProductionList.com, Alien: Romulus is scheduled to begin filming on February 6, 2023 in Budapest, Hungary.

"Romulus" appears to be the film's working title, but several sources believe it will stick. The title could refer to the legendary founder and first king of Rome.

Details are few and far between, but up-and-coming Mare of Easttown actress Cailee Spaeny (The Craft: Legacy; Pacific Rim: Uprising) is set to play the lead role. There has been some speculation that she might be playing an older take on Newt from James Cameron's Aliens, but that seems unlikely.

While there is always a chance this film will be connected to the previous instalments in the franchise, it is being described as a reboot. Whatever the case may be, it's probably safe to assume that it won't continue the divisive plot lines that played out in Ridley Scott's Prometheus and Alien: Covenant - although Scott will produce under his Scott Free banner.

Apparently, the legendary filmmaker was intrigued by an idea Alvarez pitched him on a few years ago, and called him out of the blue last year to see if he had any interest in developing it.

Hulu is also working on an Alien TV series with Noah Hawley (Fargo; Legion) that's expected to premiere at some point over the next two years. Whether both projects will be linked in any way remains to be seen.

Yeah really doubt that'll be the case. Only way it could be is if they go the prometheus route and not include a xenomorph (unless it's a subtitle of course).

@Origame - they had a xenomorph in Prometheus. An early one.

@JobinJ - yeah. In a post credit scene.

That's like calling iron man 2 a Thor movie because of mjornir.

Besides, ridley Scott specifically said that wasn't a xenomorph.

Has Ridley Scott ever commented on ALIENS? Even though Cameron’s film is considered one of the best sequels ever, I never hear Scott speak of it. When Blomkamp’s ALIENS sequel treatment was nixed because of Scott’s own plans for continuing his pre-sidequels, it made me go “hmm…”

@NoAssemblyReqd - Scott praised Cameron's sequel to his original.
"so what I think James Cameron did was an excellent action picture. It really was amazing what he accomplished. There’s also no question that Cameron made an excellent film with Aliens. It really is an achievement.” - Ridley Scott from Aliens: The Illustrated Screenplay

@Feralwookiee - why does it seem like that statement is missing a massive "BUT..."? lol

I'm cautiously optimistic for this. Then again I'm getting flashbacks to the guy on here who said Alien: Covenant would be amazing when he saw test screenings for it.

Also…

Are we ever going to see Noah Hawley’s Alien show?

@regularmovieguy - Noah Hawley and Neil Blonkamp's Alien projects are things I doubt we'll (unfortunately) ever get to see

I actually liked PROMETHEUS at the time it was released, but my opinion of it lessened once I learned that its story was the result of a rewrite intended to give the movie a JJ Abrams mystery box quality — i.e. a convoluted puzzle whose solution they would figure out later. Sound familiar? *cough* Star Wars *cough*

@NoAssemblyReqd - I don't like the puzzel box concept, unless it's done like Seven or M:I 3. Just to know, what exactly was Star Wars' puzzel box though?

@bkmeijer1 - The mystery box, as JJ Abrams described it, is tossing in myriad intriguing WTF questions that may or may not be essential to the plot, with the implicit promise to the audience that they’ll get solved later down the road. In the case of PROMETHEUS, the direct connections to ALIEN were purposely made more difficult to figure out.

(With STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, Abrams introduced Snoke with no explanation of where he came from, put Vader’s lightsaber in Maz’s basement, gave us the mystery of Rey’s parentage, and ended with a silent Luke cliffhanger. Mystery box.)

@NoAssemblyReqd - never really interpreted TFA that way. I didn't mind Snoke or Rey's parentage, but the lightsaber was kinda annoying. But moreso because of Maz saying "that's a story for another time".

@NoAssemblyReqd - so you dislike the film just for the reason that it doesn’t outright give you Alien details? That’s an interesting complaint, seeing as it was originally intended to be a spinoff/in the same universe. It was only later in production that it was decided it would be a prequel film.

To each his own

Continuing the story of Newt as a way of connecting it to earlier movies does sound like a good way to connect it, but it would be another legacy sequel. And that is getting harder and harder to do a unique take one.

A reboot would be interesting, although they could just set in the same universe and just not connect it to previous movies.

Aliens needs a status quo shift. Like maybe have it be more of a war story similar to Starship Troopers without the purposeful camp, where the Xenomorphs have invaded Earth and the remainder of humanity had to flee the planet, and are now hunted across the Galaxy by an impossibly infinite swarm of Xenomorphs. And the last vestiges of our species makes a last ditch effort to kill the Apex Queen so the Xenomorph across the universe are no longer able to communicate and can no longer swarm in units, leaving billions of Xenomorphs across the universe to be feral directionless killers, which may have been a worse choice for the future of the universe because now every planet has their own strain of Xenomorphs, and in future films a corporation tries to farm the various Xenomorphs to deadly results.

Idk... switch up the franchise.

The Alien franchise has been in the shitter since Alien 3 imo. Seeing how Disney now owns it, I'd be concerned that they're gonna push for a PG-13 rating. I'm also worried that Covenant (garbage) has set a lazy precedent in using fully cgi aliens rather than actors in costume or animatronics.

If this flick is gonna be made, make it a hard total reboot and jettison the terrible pretentious empty headed storytelling of Prometheus and Covenant. Give us characters who aren't all cannon fodder who make constant moronic decisions. Go back to basics or simply don't make this movie

Prey was solid. Hellraiser was very generic. Let's see what Hulu does with Alien.
