Pegg - who plays Scotty in the Star Trek movies - reckons if you love either Wars or Trek but hate the other, then it's "clearly a sign of some type of illness". He also reveals whether he's been approached to play a role in J.J. Abrams' Star Wars Episode VII..

We've already heard from Simon Pegg regarding J.J. Abrams taking the Star Wars directing job, but while talking to Digital Spy he elaborates a little, while giving his take on the "war" between Trekkies and...umm, Warsies? The Shaun Of The Dead actor reckons that in most cases people are fans of both. He's also asked about a possible role in Star Wars Episode VII, but of course, if there has been any discussion he's not gonna spill the beans here.



I have to agree with him actually. In my experience folks do tend to prefer one over the other, but it's rare enough someone is a big fan of one while absolutely hating the rival franchise. I'm sure there will be some who disagree! So sound off in the usual place.

I prefer Star Wars to Star Trek, but I don't hate Star Trek.

I grow up watching TNG, DS9, and Voyager with my Dad. Those were good memories. And I really enjoyed the Star Trek reboot.

Star Trek movies are weird. Nostalgia is through the roof, acting is some of the worst in history,action is good, writing is s?!t, sound effects and music is some of the best ever. Does this add up to good movies?

I love Star Wars, but I've recently started getting into Star Trek too.

JJ Abrams' Star Trek movie got me interested in the franchise again, and I used to watch TNG with my Dad when I was a kid, so now I do watch Star Trek a bit. I'd say I'm more interested in the Star Trek universe or mythology rather than trying to watch the shows as much as possible, and I still think Abrams' movie is the best Star Trek so far (which will probably annoy a lot of Trek fans).

How anyone can call the acting in either Wars or Trek "worst in history" is beyond me (obviously I'm not including the prequels). You could argue that Mark Hamill was a bit green in A New Hope but he quickly improved. Carrie Fisher..ok not the best, but not terrible. Everyone else did a great job. And I see no weak links at all in the original Trek cast, and very few in future incarnations either.

don't mind either,loved the original trilogy & bits of the prequels & i like about four could be five star trek films.

if i had to pick one over the other it would be star wars,it features better storylines,characters,aliens,weapons,ships & planets.

I think, due to to JJ Abrams in fact, that many modern scifi fans enjoy both franchises now. I had NEVER even just a little bit wanted to jump into to Star Trek. After Abrams' film released, I found characters I loved and can't get enough of. I was always a Star Wars fan. I had written off ANYTHING Star Wars based on how bad the prequels were. George Lucas should NOT have written the scripts and Hayden Christianson was SO bad and there were so many changes to the Blu Rays that I gave up due to the loss of what Star Wars once was. When Disney aquired the rights, I jumped back on. What Lucas DID do was he created something purely timeless. With the story now in new and TRUSTED hands, I see a modern age where Star Wars and Star Trek fan bases can flow together...minus old school nerds who really have nothing better to do than to be wank about it all @Jollem (pix are exactly what I refer to)

And I hope JJ Abrams does not pull a Nolan and cast the same folks for his films. If there is a beloved spot for Pegg, awesome. Don't force it. Please.

Romulans = Sith
Klingons = Mandalorians

There are many similarities. Personally, I like them both equally but for different reasons. I like Star Wars for the escapist fantasy and I like Star Trek for the possible future that it represents. It would be interesting to see some Star Trek races represented in the Star Wars universe, a la E.T. in the Republic Senate.

I've always preferred Trek over Wars. I think the movies are better, and the Wars prequels are pretty much crap all around.

I love both but for different reasons. Wars was always a more action oriented sci fi franchise versus Trek which was always more of an intellectual/political sci fi franchise.

There's been a lot of bad things about both, just as there has been good things about both. Obviously, Star Trek has gotten much more time and opportunity to do more, so its definitely at a higher level of exploration and expansion. However, I prefer the creativity of Star Wars as a whole universe. Enjoyed the new Star Trek immensely, but dont care too much for the old stuff. Hopefully both will have bright and bold futures :)

Yes, Trek is supposed to be different than Star Wars. JJ has tried to blur the line. The best Trek's make us optimistic about humans in the future—and the art direction must transport us to the future (not boiler rooms).

@fettastic but is having interesting villians really a bad thing? I mean, Skyfall and TDK were both great movies and I have no doubt that Ben Kingsley will be amazing in Iron Man 3. I don't feel like a character-villian is being redone, actors are just trying harder now to create something 'original'. But I am, alongside you, excited to see where both franchises will go. They're both amazing in their own way.
