SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY Ticket Presales Have Doubled Marvel's BLACK PANTHER On Fandango

Ticketing company Fandango has revealed that Solo: A Star Wars Story enjoyed the second-best first day of presales of the year, behind only Avengers: Infinity War, while doubling Black Panther's numbers.

Following reports that Solo: A Star Wars Story is tracking towards a $170 million-plus 4-day opening weekend, Fandango has revealed that presales for the upcoming film have actually doubled those for Black Panther in the first 24 hours of their availability.

According to the online ticketing company, Solo: A Star Wars Story had the second-best first day of presales of the year, behind only Avengers: Infinity War. Marvel's blockbuster team-up not only doubled the numbers of Black Panther as well, but also outpaced the last seven entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe combined (Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, and Black Panther). Obviously, we shouldn't expect those kind of record-breaking numbers for Solo, but it still must make the House of Mouse (and the company's investors) happy knowing the film - which suffered from a rocky production (and change of directors) - is not only tracking signicantly higher than Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ($155M opening), but also one of Marvel's top-performing films in Black Panther.

Now, Black Panther did go on to rake in a whopping $1.3 billion at the global box office ($689.9M domestic), so it will be interesting to see how Solo: A Star Wars Story compares in the long haul. Black Panther has some very impressive legs thanks to great word of mouth. Although hype of Solo has picked up with the increased marketing, there's still a good number of Star Wars fans still on the fence about it. After all, it's not easy seeing someone new step into the boots of the galaxy's most iconic smuggler, but perhaps Alden Ehrenreich will surprise us all. If not, there's always Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, who definitely looks to be one of the movie's brightest spots.

It's far too early to predict how Solo: A Star Wars Story will stack up with Marvel's heaviest hitters in the long haul, but for at least opening weekend, things are looking bright for Disney and Lucasfilm.

Solo: A Star Wars Story flies into theaters May 25.

But I thought there was no interest? How can this be?

@TheUnworthyThor - Star Wars presales are unaturally higher than most films because of the fanbase. For example Last Jedi and Force Awakens had way higher presales than Infinity War but opened lower.

@TheUnworthyThor - the opening is going to be pretty irrelevant anyway. What matters is the legs that the movie has. And because of TLJ, it’s not going to be there

@Elle79 - Pretty convenient to always have sliding goalposts.
TheUnworthyThor

@FilmStudent - But the fan base was supposed to be so turned off by The Last Jedi that they weren’t going to show up to anymore Star Wars movies.

@TheUnworthyThor - I have consistently said that the number that matters is the global box office number at the end of the run. That's the only goalpost I've set. Sorry to disappoint you.
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 5/7/2018, 11:23 AM
@Elle79 - I’m not sure that’s true, but what I really mean is constitently giving Star Wars movies a different level to reach than what we would consider successful for any other movie franchise thereby conveniently allowing that goalpost to change on a whim.

I am absolutely not surprised by this and said months ago that Deadpool's move to may will be detrimental to its BO success more than it would be for both Solo and IW.

It is stuck between the two juggernauts.

A Star Wars movie in this age remains a massive threat for ANY other movie.

You can't built a fanbase during four decades and expect it to melt tremendously like ice under the sun at the first or even second or third disappointin' movies in a row because it has a massive fanbase, much bigger than the one of Deadpool.

It will be absolutely huge and Rob Liefeld arrogant comment about Deadpool's BO stumping Solo on its way and not being afraid to go toe to toe with it may come back to bite him.

I wonder what this means for deadpool 2 which is a week before it but has also broke. Some (albeit smaller) presale records of its own (highest R on fandango)

Somehow it does and doesn't surprise me. Black Panther was expected to be such a succefull and welldone movie before its really, but then again, neither does Solo have in my experience

Why is everything on this site a comparison? Your car is fast but not as fast as his car. Water is wet but not as wet as this one. Can't fans just enjoy movies without all the revenue talk. Also isn't it time for Wilding to post an article about random Vogue photography lol

TheUnworthyThor - 5/5/2018, 5:11 AM
@ChocolateHokage - But in this case it’s not so much about a contest as it is about context because it’s the same company and telling us the presale numbers are pretty meaningless without telling us in relationship to others where the fall because how else do you know if they are good or bad.

...the Black Panther was mentioned like seven times.....does it really matter what it beats because Disney is getting all the money anyway...

Disney better hope they got this movie right. It’s either that or the movie will be bad but that society as a whole doesn’t know the meaning of insanity and will continue to flock to these movies no matter what.

People underestimate how popular SW still is, even after the divisive TLJ. I think most people (not the vocal crybabies who don't like anything but the OT stuff) are drawn to characters like Han, Chewy, and Lando and likely trust a name like Ron Howard to deliver a decent film.

It'll be like the Transformers film series - a few movies will get given the pass with varying excuses made as to why the quality was weaker. Despite what they did to Han Solo in TFA, he's still one of the more popular characters in the franchise so the movie will still earn some - though that should not be viewed as a sign of it's quality.

At some point, most likely Episode 10, the original cast/characters will be gone. Without them the series will be riding on the creative decisions of people who do not understand the brand as a whole and similar to the Transformers franchise people will abandon it at some point.

Wow, those double standards lol

For weeks we had 12 articles a day micro-describing every single record Black Panther was beating, now there's one article about one movie outperforming it regarding one criteria, and people are like "Let's stop comparing movies" or "Does it matter?". Well, it mattered when it was Black Panther, so why would this matter any less? It's just information.

This is Wonder Woman syndrome all over again. When WW was breaking a record, it was "Ohhhhh, take that, other movie, BOOM!", and when WW got outperformed, the same people were like "Wow, guys, have some respect, it's not a competition!".

@Asturgis - thats because a lot of people don't like the idea of Solo. Its really not that difficult to grasp.

Couple that with wanting some movies to just do really well and being disappointed when they take a "hit" and yea double standard arises.

This happens all the time, idk why people get surprised when it does. Same shit happens in sports.
Asturgis
Asturgis - 5/5/2018, 5:13 AM
@BlackBeltJones - I can grasp it just fine bro, I'm not even surprised (since this isn't even remotely surprising), I just find it really funny :) I'm happy when everything performs well, because it just means more for me.

Then again, if one day I read the same article regarding Suicide Squad 2 outperforming those movies, I'll probably have a heart attack. Does that make me a hypocrite?

*Don't answer that…*

But I thought Star Wars was dead and no one was going to see their future films!

Just a bunch of edge lords screaming into the Internet Abyss and Star Wars continues to rake in money and have a nice warm seat left open for every single person who bashed TLJ to occupy when they go see it in theaters.

the name star wars can sell a lot of tickets.

been thinking for a while that this whole lets put it out in the summer thing was a experiment to see how well it would do vs xmas.

i bet in the future there may be 2 sw movies a year.

@grif - I always thought Disney was very open to the idea of more than one Star Wars movie a year but in this case there is a fairly light summer and an incredibly packed December.
