Jeff Goldblum is set to reprise his role as Dr. Ian Malcolm in this summer's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and in an interview with Kris Tapley on Variety's Playback podcast, the actor got into some of the big ideas that his character is known for pondering.
While promoting his upcoming movie Isle of Dogs, the iconic actor naturally delved into a few thought-provoking topics, as Jeff Goldblum tends to do. After Tapley mentioned that he recently watched Independence Day, he asked Goldblum if he has ever seen a UFO, which led to a conversation about how scientifically advanced an alien species could become.
Goldblum brought this idea back into the realm of Jurassic World, saying:
"I talk about the dinosaurs (in the movie) and genetic tinkering, and that's a powerful thing too. That's why we've got to be especially smart and compassionate and wise and large in our thinking and feeling."
He also talked about how he liked getting the opportunity to become Ian Malcolm again because the character is such a strong supporter of science.
"I enjoyed getting a chance to dress up in black again and say a couple of things about science and being a proponent of science. The human curiosity and investigation and fact-based storehouse that we have is deeply valuable and must be esteemed and celebrated, but those who would use the animal kingdom and our scientific achievement and knowledge for profit or cheap entertainment or ticket sales or, heaven forbid, militaristic power or leverage, ‘woe be to them.’ So I liked getting another crack at that.”
Of course, the interview wasn't all about high-concept ideas. Goldblum also expressed his amusement with the
shirtless Ian Malcolm Funko Pop and mentioned that even he wasn't able to buy one in stores due to their high demand.
However, Goldblum managed to get his hands on one of the figures during
his appearance on Conan.
