JUSTICE LEAGUE Star Ray Fisher's Role In REBEL MOON Revealed As New Details About Two-Part Movie Surface

Justice League star Ray Fisher will reunite with Zack Snyder in Netflix's Rebel Moon, and we finally have news on who the Cyborg actor will play along with details on what led to it becoming a two-parter.

In Rebel Moon, when a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius, they dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past named Kora to seek out warriors from neighbouring planets to help them take a stand.

The first part of the movie arrives on Netflix this December, with the second half expected to follow sometime in 2024. According to Vanity Fair (via SFFGazette.com), both instalments cost a total of $166 million, so Zack Snyder was clearly able to reign in the budget (the films are an absolute bargain compared to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, for example).

As for why what was one movie became two, it's all down to Rebel Moon's huge script pointing to a mammoth runtime poorly suited to streaming.

"Originally, the script was one movie, but it was in 'Zack form,'" producer Deborah Snyder explains. "It was 172 pages. [Netflix film chairman Scott Stuber] was like, 'On the service, under-two-hour movies really do better for some reason,' even though you’ll binge-watch a series of eight episodes."

"Zack said, 'If you ask me to make this less than two hours, I’m going to lose all the character. You won’t care about these people. It’s a character story about how people can change, and redemption, and what are you willing to fight for...' So he said, 'What if I give you two movies?'"

The characters will clearly be a vital part of Rebel Moon and Snyder has assembled an impressive ensemble which includes Justice League star Ray Fisher.

According to the site, the Cyborg actor will be joined by Cleopatra Coleman as Darrian and Devra, a brother-and-sister team known as the Bloodaxes. They're "galactic insurgents who have been angering the Mother World with a hit-and-run spree of attacks against the Imperium, without being especially effective at stopping its reign of abuse and terror."

Zack says, "They fight and hide. They don’t have the resources to have a pitched battle in the wide open. They’re kind of just [frick]ing with supply lines and blowing up train tracks. That’s their kind of thing."

Rebel Moon is set to be released on Netflix on December 22, 2023. A first look at Fisher's character can be found here.

I liked ZSJL but AOTD was like cinematic nyquil. This one sounds a little derivative of so many other things, so idk if it's gonna work out that well

Snyder works better when he doesnt have a limited runtime...this looks interesting, I just hope its better than Army of the Dead, that was trash...and Fisher deserves it, crazy what Warner did to him.

I really liked the way Netflix released the Fear Street trilogy. They should do something like that for Rebel Moon. Maybe give each part a subtitle to make it feel more self contained, so casual viewers don't feel like it's as big of a time commitment.

Sure, people binge 8hour series, but those are usually comprised of several 45 minute episodes with a definitive beginning and end. There are distinct "breaks" that give you mini-conclusions before going into the next episode.

Movies can't really be looked at through that lens. Binging Stranger things feels less intimidating than binging The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It's all about the number of breaks.

I'm game but this looks super derivative and Zack being involved in the writing of the script doesn't inspire confidence. But the character designs are cool.

@GhostDog - I mean, it is derivative, of Star Wars. IIRC, it was a treatment for a Star Wars movie that Disney rejected, so he's making it with Netflix.

So it was even gonna be one movie? My main issue with two-parters it's often cut in half which makes the first hakf feel boring, but I hope this finds a way around it.

Also, I have no idea if that budget is supposed to be a lot or not. Especially considering Netflix is gonna charge me extra for sharing an account.

As Zack's career has progressed and he has taken more creative control over his movies I've found them harder to watch. His stories and characters are all over the place and his cut of JL was far too long and that extra length added nothing of worth to justify the run time. He's like a kid who's had too much sugar, it's like he gets over excited and doesn't know how to stop and control himself. I think he's got a great visual style, but he's better when he's directing from someone else's script.

@bcom - Zack not being reigned in gets similar results to Patty Jenkins not being reigned in.

@PoolParty - Built in audience. Same reason you'd hire Nic Cage or make a movie like Crackcoon. Chances are you'll at least breakeven and you'll at least get everyone involved some exposure.

That Zach Snyder is saying if Rebel Moon ran for less than 2 hours it would 'lose all the character' is hilarious when you take into account that he's yet to make a movie with a memorable character.

...they gave you 4+ hrs for Justice League and we still didn't care for the characters... just sayin'
