GODZILLA VS. KONG: Bryan Hirota On How JAWS Inspired The VFX Of The Kaiju Fight At Sea (Exclusive)

We recently had the opportunity to speak with Scanline VFX about their contributions to Godzilla Vs. Kong. While chatting with Bryan Hirota, we learned more about how Jaws inspired the underwater scenes!

After a long stint without any major blockbuster films, the wait for Godzilla Vs. Kong finally came to an end last month, and fans have been able to experience the latest MonsterVerse movie on both big and small screens in theaters and on HBO Max.

GVK features an insane amount of intense Kaiju action, with battles taking place on land and at sea.

When we had the opportunity to sit down with Scanline VFX's Bryan Hirota (The Suicide Squad, Zack Snyder's Justice League), we were sure to ask about those epic Kaiju encounters, and learn more about the process of creating them. First, we wanted to learn exactly what VFX work Bryan had a hand in.

"We made the Pensacola attack at the beginning of the movie when you see Godzilla. There were a few shots in that sequence when you're inside APEX's headquarters where Luma did the interior where you saw Mecha's eye. But the exterior, when Bernie is looking down, looks past the eye, and you see Godzilla in the distance; we did the stuff with Godzilla in that Pensacola attack. We did all of the stuff at sea where Kong was being transported. So when you see him sleeping on the transport ship and when Jia visited visits Kong at night, and when Godzilla shows up and wrecks the fleet and attacks Kong.

gvk

And then the stuff inside the APEX arena where Mecha Godzilla was being tested out on the Skull Crawler and when Mecha becomes sentient. When it gets charged with the genetic energy, it becomes sentient, kills Simmons, busts out, and when Mecha fights against Godzilla and Kong, and when Kong tears Mechas head off. And when Godzilla swims away. That was all our body of work."

Knowing that Bryan and Scanline had a huge hand in the sea battle, we asked him to clarify previous comments from the director that those scenes were Jaws-inspired.

"I think some of that is the design of the action beats. I think specifically what Adam was referring to was when Godzilla was dragging half a ship. In Jaws, they stuck a barrel into his back so that they could sort of keep track of where he was. That idea of dragging half a boat, I think it was clearly inspired by that, but it's taken to the ridiculous end with the scale of Godzilla. Like dragging half a boat. Adam wanted to see these shots of Godzilla swimming underwater and swimming under the surface, the ones where that camera's in front of him, which, I think those might be Jaws-like as well. And we were inspired by the Galapagos sea iguanas. Them and alligators and crocodiles in terms of how somebody with Godzilla's physiology might move through the water."

What did you guys think of the visual effects for the water scenes, and the film in general? Leave your thoughts on Bryan's comments in the usual spot, and be sure to check out the full interview below!

@DoubleD - the movie has yet to open in some countries one of them being Japan. It is looking at a 460-470 milion worldwide total which by todays standarts and after KOTM only made 386 milion worldwide is still good.
Had it been opened in theaters in other countries in europe it would have gotten an extra 50-70 milion, it would have surely toped Skull Island or goten close to it. This movie isn't playing at its full potential cause it would have probably done 600 milion in normal times

@LameLuka - KOTM budget was $170,000,000 X 3 = 510 Million was needed to breakeven.

Godzilla made $524,976,069. The budget was $160,000,000 X 3 = 480 Million to breakeven.

@DoubleD - this film was far better than skull island regardless of what makes more. It's obvious if released in the same economy that godzilla vs kong would have crushed skull islands numbers more than godzilla crushed kong but why does it matter? Monsterverse is thriving so it's win win

Hulkh8liars - 4/18/2021, 2:03 PM
@DoubleD - these numbers are not accurate. Even if you take the high estimates of all cost statistics released by legendary and round up you end up with a lower actual to profit goal . Each monsterverse film made 100+m profit at the box office(confirmed by shareholders). Some of them didn't make alot bit the universe has zero technical flops

@Hulkh8liars - None of the Monsterverse movies could even get close to Zack Snyder's Justice League 2017 numbers $657,926,987 and they pulled the plug. Even without a Pandemic.

Say goodbye to Godzilla and Kong their finished with these kind of numbers.

DoubleD - 4/18/2021, 4:45 PM
@Hulkh8liars - If Godzilla 524 million, Kong: Skull Island 566 million, King of Monsters 386 million and Godzilla VS Kong 390 million

can't even get close to Snyder's Justice League 657 million that's pretty bad for the Monsterserse.

Monsterverse was worst then Zach Snyder's 2017 Justice League.

@DoubleD - nobody brought up the terrible justice league film. It's funny how the only version of that film that could make any money was the one snyder barely touched. They pulled the plug on his films because audiences didn't like them(they loved gvk). You seem to think wb and their bad decisions have bearing on a franchise that wb has no say in. There have already been more monsterverse films than there will ever be snyderverse films. Btw the first jl was one of the biggest film investments ever and actually did lose wb money.lost them a lot of money

Hulkh8liars - 4/18/2021, 4:59 PM
@DoubleD - even skull island(weakest of the monsterverse films) was far better of a film then either jl. You keep bringing up jl under an article that doesn't involve it... Seems you are just mad that jl got owned by gvk more than kong got owned by godzilla.

@Hulkh8liars - Monsterverse with box office numbers worst then the 2017 Justice League.

LameLuka
LameLuka - 4/18/2021, 5:47 PM
@DoubleD - the 2017 version isn't even Zack movie.
Also why are we comparing these again ? I loved both The Snyder Cut and GvK but one only came out on streaming and the other had both options and it is proving a big hit by pandemic standarts both in theaters and streaming.
LameLuka
LameLuka - 4/18/2021, 5:48 PM
@DoubleD - GvK hasn't finished its box office run yet and the predictions are pointing to a 470 milion total at the end of its run which is an 84 milion increase from KOTM 386 milion total.
Hulkh8liars
Hulkh8liars - 4/18/2021, 6:06 PM
@DoubleD - made more profit than 2017 justice. So you are right the party is over for the snyderverse. Even if toho doesn't re sign godzilla with or without an american release will continue to be more popular and profitable than the now twice cancelled snyderverse. Stop bringing up those abortions of cinema in articles that don't relate to them. You just mad that the world wanted more modern godzilla films than snyder verse films. Hold on to that L... You are gonna need it.

Hulkh8liars - 4/18/2021, 2:30 PM
"Scene was inspired by jaws"... Kong needed his jaw wired shut after the right hand godzilla gives him in this scene. Kind of set the pace for the rest of the film

I think the VFX in the this movie was pretty good. It could've looked glossy or overly digital, but it looked pretty realistic (as far as that was possible) in my opinion
LameLuka
LameLuka - 4/18/2021, 5:51 PM
Chances are this movie will be in the third place until Fast and Furious 9 rolls around which will probably end up being the biggest movie of the year at the box office. Unless Matrix 4 does gangbusters and ends up becoming the first 1 billion hit of the year
