RoboCop reboot Kinnaman

Murphy actor Joel Kinnaman spoke to IGN about why he signed up for the Robocop reboot from director Jose Padhila. Said Kinnaman, "Jose Padhila, the director. When I first heard RoboCop was going to be remade. I said “Yeah, that’s interesting, I’ll probably watch that at some point, but I’m not interested at all to be in it.” However, Kinnaman changed his mind once he learned that he was being targeted for the lead. "Then I found out that Jose wanted to do it and meet me, which I was very flattered by. I followed his work from way before he was going to do this movie, and I was very impressed with both his political analysis of Brazil and the style of filmmaking. The quality of his action that he blends with a very strong visual sense and very strong acting. For me he’s one of the big young directors. After I met him and he told me his vision for this movie, it was something that I really wanted to do. And I had to fight for it. It wasn’t an easily won audition. I had to audition three times. It was while I was filming The Killing up in Vancouver, so I was going up and down."

And just why did Kinnaman fight for the role? Well, according to the actor, he'd been up for lead roles before on other projects, however, while directors loved him, studios were nervous about him considering that he was an unproven commodity. Explains Kinnaman, "At this point in my career, I’d done a TV show that had given me some visibility in the States, but I was still hearing from directors that were interested in doing a movie with me that they couldn’t have me in the lead because I wasn’t a name, even though I was the best person for the part. It’s not bankable – that whole rhetoric." He continued, "So at some point I wanted to take a step into a bigger movie so that I could get to a position so that I could be of help to a director that wanted to get a movie made. To a certain degree, as an actor, the only way we have to define our artistry is by our choices. What choices we make. Because we’re not authors of our own projects. So of course you want to have as many options as possible. So I wanted a bigger movie that would elevate me hopefully to some degree."

It has a great cast: Oldman, Keaton, Jackson and Williams are top-knotch. Kinnaman could be the weak-link though.

I can't see any reason why the director would pursue Kinnaman if he wasn't strong enough to hold his own with the excellent supporting cast? - I will definitley be checking this out and hope to be pleasantly surprised.

So basically Jose's Leftist politics which is inherent both in the RoboCop franchise and Hollywood in general, is his deciding factor to be a part of the film?

They are fighting an uphill battle; a R-rated movie getting a PG-13 remake...c'mon now. I get that people will say that it doesn't matter, but to me and a lot of other fans, it does. The original Robocop had this sensationalized satire on America (at the time) and a ton of great kills. The ED-209 killing the Omnicorp member...classic...Murphy getting shot to pieces by Clarence...classic.

This movie will probably follow the trend that almost every other Hollywood remake follows which is, give us style but no substance. Things will look like Robocop, and sound like Robocop; but at the end of the day it won't be Robocop. Joel Kinnamin telling me he wants this movie to raise his stature, so what the script didn't bring him in? That's a great sign.

@fettastic I can't agree with you on that; I doubt this movie will have the intensity and social satire that made the original Robocop great.

I can shit on remakes all day long; but I have to give remakes of The Thing and Halloween credit, they knew what they were adapting and did a hell of a job staying true to their nature. Sure they were shit movies, but at least they stayed true to the R-rated movies that came before.

You can't really say that it was R-rated and excessively violent for any other purpose then to bring Paul Verhoeven's vision to life. They could have gone Dredd reboot route but they want to capture as many kiddies as they can, why? Because shit script, shit director, and shit actor. They are trying to capture as much of the market as they can. Paul Verhoeven didn't settle for that shit and now they are doing it anyways, because they want the easy money.

This movie better be violent as he'll like the OG ones, otherwise it will be mediocre at best

@DelTorite early reactions online have been VERY positive. Just Google reviews posted this week, there's quite a few.

And whoever said Kinnaman can't act, GTFO. Watch The Kiling or Easy Money. Dude can act.
