FANTASTIC FOUR Director Matt Shakman Confirms That STAR TREK 4 Is Still In Development

It seems we haven't seen the last of the Kelvin Timeline Enterprise crew just yet!

Matt Shakman was all set to helm Paramount Pictures' fourth Star Trek movie before leaving the project to direct Fantastic Four for Marvel Studios, and the filmmaker has now shared a very interesting update on our potential big-screen return to the Final Frontier.

Shakman has already explained why he decided to step away from Star Trek in favor of Marvel's First Family, and has now revealed that Paramount is still planning to move forward the film.

During an interview with Collider, Shakman was asked if he could touch on what his take on the iconic sci-fi franchise would have been about, and said that he wasn't able to discuss it because "I think what they're still working on is a version of what I have been working on for the time that I was involved."

While this may not seem like a major revelation, it's worth noting that our last update claimed that the movie had stalled and may have even been shelved completely.

Shakman went on to point out that, even though his Trek movie would have been a "large tent-pole film," he believes the universe is better suited to a slightly smaller budget.

"I actually think that the way forward on a Star Trek movie is maybe to make one that's like $30 to $50 million, that's hard sci-fi, aimed right at the fans." The director posited that "In our day and age now, any time you go to space in a movie it's expensive. When you're flying around in the Enterprise, even if you're going to land and be in one place for a long time, it's still pretty expensive."

Cast members such as Chris Pine and Zoe Saldaña have previously stated that they were ready and willing to reprise their roles, but have yet to see a script. Shakman's comments would seem to indicate that things have changed in that regard, but we'll just have to wait and see.

@WEAPONXOXOXO - I always imagined development hell looking that way lol. All kidding aside, I don't care so much about that iteration of Trek anymore unless they reboot again for TNG or somethiing, which I can't say I really want either. Although I didn't want the original reboot either and imo it was good. It's just hard to care with no Anton. Chekov is supposed to be there, not written out or given the T'Challa treatment.

I'm by no means a massive star trek fan, but I know a few, and what I can gather is that the fans want something way more cerebral and less high stakes action. The television shows were about culture, politics, science, exploration, community, and other such topics.

If they would just stick to that classic Trek vibe I feel like these films would strike way more of a cord with the audience. Rather than trying to be Star Wars they should lean into what makes Star Trek Star Trek.

He is right. I would love to see a cerebral Star Trek film that stylistically is as far away from JJ Abrams as possible. The fan-made episodes that follow the Original Series are really well done at a few hundred thousand dollars in crowd (fan)-funding.

Shakman is right that they shouldn't try to make a super expensive Star Trek movie. Wrath of Khan was made on cheap and had to cut ton of corners, yet it is to this day the best Star Trek movie and one of the best sci-fi movies period. Star Trek doesn't need to and shouldn't be the biggest blockbuster event of all-time or anything like that.

And if the Kelvin cast are being difficult and asking too much, cut them out and introduce brand new characters played by up-and-coming talent.

Just another IP Abrams and Bad Robot have devalued. The only good thing about this rendition is the cast

Blue Origin's capsule strikes a temporal rift transferring its crew to the bridge of the Kelvin timeline 'Enterprise'. Bill Shatner immediately falls out with the imposter Chris Pine; a physical beat-down for the role of Captain Kirk. Shatner isn't match-fit, his Gorn-thrashing days are long behind him.

Pine wins in a bloody KO. Jeff Bezos picks up the tab. Cue titles.

Post credit scene introduces Paul Wesley.

How about we wait until it's actually being made before we keep reporting these bogus rumors and speculation.

Make it so.

I hope they give Chekov a proper ending.

RIP Anton.
