'Star Trek' has a galactic $76.5 million opening!

LOS ANGELES – "Star Trek" beamed itself up to the top of the box office, earning $76.5 million in its opening weekend.

Paramount Pictures had estimated that the movie would make about $50 million for the weekend, but figured that strong reviews helped carry it to the bigger opening.

Director J.J. Abrams' reboot of the beloved sci-fi franchise made $72.5 million from Friday through Sunday, plus $4 million just in pre-midnight screenings Thursday, the studio said Saturday. That cumulative figure includes a record $8.2 million in IMAX showings.

"Star Trek," which reveals the back stories of Capt. Kirk, Mr. Spock and the rest of the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise, is an unusual blockbuster that pleased critics, too, receiving 96 percent positive reviews on the Rotten Tomatoes Web site.

"Last year 'The Dark Knight' and 'Iron Man' both were embraced by critics as incredible filmmaking as well as big action-adventure movies. This one has been even better reviewed," said Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore. "You look at the level of critical response and the audience reaction, we definitely feel like the movie is set to play into Memorial Day and into the summer."

Moore said he expected the movie, which had a $140 million budget, should gross over $200 million total this summer, even with competition like "Terminator: Salvation" coming on May 21 and "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" arriving in theaters July 15.

Abrams got it right, he said, by appealing to both hardcore "Star Trek" fans as well as moviegoers who may not have been familiar with the 1960s television series and the many movies and TV spin-offs it spawned. It stars Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock, and features an appearance by Leonard Nimoy as an older version of the half-Vulcan, half-human Spock.

"It just shows you how talented he is and what a great movie he made," Moore said.

"Star Trek" also beat the $6.3 million record "The Dark Knight" set in its opening weekend on IMAX screens last year.

"The DNA of this movie and the DNA of the `Star Trek' franchise work perfectly together and are very much a complement to what IMAX has accomplished," said Greg Foster, chairman and president of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "IMAX was a company that had a sort of older-school, older-fashioned approach to things and we hipped it up and reinvented ourselves, if you will. That's precisely what J.J. Abrams and Paramount did with 'Star Trek.'"

The fact that the "Star Trek" haul improved from $26.8 million on Friday to $27.4 million on Saturday is a good sign, said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com.

"Sometimes you will see a movie drop big-time," Dergarabedian said. "What this 'Star Trek' is going to have is legs, a rare commodity in this world where every week there's a new blockbuster."

As expected, last week's top film, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," came in at No. 2 with $27 million. The prequel to the "X-Men" franchise, starring Hugh Jackman as the mutant who slices and dices his enemies with his metal claws, has made nearly $129.6 million in two weeks.

"It's the same weekend drop as ('X-Men: The Last Stand'), the last one. That tends to be what fan-based movies do," said Chris Aronson, senior vice president of domestic distribution for 20th Century Fox. "To have $130 million in the first 10 days is sensational. We think we withstood the attack of 'Star Trek,' if you will, and will settle into a long, successful run."

The week's other new wide release, the stoner comedy "Next Day Air," came in at sixth place with $4 million.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Final figures will be released Monday.

1. "Star Trek," $72.5 million.
2. "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," $27 million.
3. "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past," $10.45 million.
4. "Obsessed," $6.6 million.
5. "17 Again," $4.4 million.
6. "Next Day Air," $4 million.
7. "The Soloist," $3.6 million.
8. "Monsters vs. Aliens," $3.4 million.
9. "Earth," $2.5 million.
10. "Hannah Montana: The Movie," $2.4 million.

SO these figures dont include foreign sales yet? It was the best movie experience ive had in a while. Everyone was quiet most of the time because you cant take your eyes off the screen. At the end everyone cheered. I havent seen that in years!

It has been so long since I have seen the re-runs of Star Trek. I used to love it. I hear so many good reviews about it and I hope when I do get to see it I won't be disappointed. Going by the trailers it looks fantastic and the reviews it looks like I won't be!

The movie is nearly Flawless from beginning until End.
I dont even want to write a review about how GREAt it is, its one of the best films I've seen in a while. This and The Dark Knight both amazed me.

I WILL SEE THIS AGAIN, but next time it'll be at the IMAX. Lets just put it this way, I was never a hardcore Trekkie fan, but I did watch some of the Tv shows now and then, but I didnt know of the culture and a few thinsg here and there.

This film will pretty much get you into it, IT really is MEANT for EVERYONE. The reviews are right. 96% positive review rate worldwide.

People clapped when it was over when I saw it, too.

Was kind of weird...

Yeah, I don't understand when people clap at the end of the movie, none of the makers are there, so why? Aiiwold, seeing it IMAX quality is the way to go, that's how I first saw this movie, I was blown by the visual and sound quality, not to mention the movie itself was amazing. My friend's girlfriend doesn't care to see it, so I'm going to check it out with him this weekend, though it'll be regular projection, that'll kind of suck.

@unlimited, these are domestic earnings. Wolverine hauled 85 mil worldwide opening weekend. This made 72 mil in just America.

@ The MYTH ...exactly!

@ Unlimited
Also, I posted this on a SUNDAY. This only counts Fridays and some of saturdays gross I believe. OH, and This is only in the USA. I think, it will break Wolverines OPENING WEEKEND.

But than again if it doesnt, it really doesnt matter does it? Wolverine sucked lol.

Star Trek was a billion times better than any Marvel movie made, or shit it was so good Im going to see it at least 2 more times. Hopefully this time Itll be at the IMAX, and 96% worldwide RATIO POSITIVE REVIEWS....wolverine got a 34%...lol. I mean Im not even a FAN of Star trek...or trekkie or whatever you call them...and I'm just blown away watching this film.
Wolverine on the other hand, didnt do anything, for me...and majority nof the fans. Was it entertaining? Yes. Was it a good film? no. Terrible.

Yeap. That's ok, but, it will never beat the Star Wars opening-weekend record. so HA! Star Trek SUCKS!!!

they will be saying the same thing about transformers 2, its flawed, plot is bad. And then some will say it is the greatest just because FOX did not make.

Star Trek sucks? How does this reboot suck? Because it didnt make more money than your precious Star wars movie lol, geez is that your best argument lol...okay genius. Lets just put it this way, this film has more character development, and a better script than any star wars film out there. THIS IS COMING FROM A STAR WARS FAN. I'm afraid you are wrong. The reviews and the general audience have loved it.... 95-96% positive worldwide rating for this reboot. ITS WHAT A DYING FRANCHISE NEEDED.

I love Star Wars. But Star Wars has nothing on THIS 'STAR TREK' movie, unlike for star wars fans as myself...this movie proves anyone can watch it without being a trekkie or knowing anything about the franchise. After seeing this movie, I find myself being a fan of it in the future. Totally look forward to the next sequel.

Oh, and Lucas Ltd was involed in it, I remember seeing it in the credits, I believe for sound credit and a few other minor things.

@ SHHH

I have faith in Transformers: ROTF. Not because Fox isnt involved, but because Transformers origins doesnt come from the 190s cartoon show it comes from a TOYLINE. Everyone keeps forgetting that. Same with G.I. Joe, except G.I. Joe was a TV show first, Toyline second. But G.I. Joe being a Anti=politcal american movie is the best idea I've heard, personally, being were not the Same america that stands for: "A true american hero" anymore, not since after WW2 or after the 1900s....i mean the only president to not get his hands dirty was JFK...and you cant even be too sure on that and scandals that have occured since after the 1900s.

But, back to T:ROTF....if transformers 2 has mediocre fight scenes, a bad script, no character development, than yes. I will be on here letting you know how I felt about it. but, mostlikely it will be good, really hoping for it.

Maybe we have a Math Major in here. But, please tell me how, 79 million is more then 158 million? TDK made 67 mill just on opening day, we dont need the math majors to tell us TDK killed Star Trek on opening day, and weekend. Star Trek is 30th in opening, didnt even beat Wolvie's day 1 numbers.

I dont think Star Trek sucks. JJ Abrams sure does thou. Its his vision on the screen, so its gonna be hit or miss. Remember Cloverfield and MI3, those where big ass crap festivals. End of story.

@Pierce_Highmen

First, Who are you talking to? Because, I didnt write the article. I posted the Article from my source.

Second, This is numbers ONLY in the USA not worldwide...so as of tonight the NEW number should show a worldwide rating of whatever gross it got. If I find it i'll show it to you, thats if anyone of my sources decide to post it.

Third, J.J. Abrams does not suck. I think after seeing this film, I've built more respect for him. Colverfield was unique....shows what you can do with a shitty camera, He made more money than most director's that have been using an expensive cameras and high budget production equipment. lol...MI3 was better than MI2. Sooooo what the hell are you talking about?!

ITs sad how people dont read the article, and jump to assumptions, when really they dont know shit about what their talking about. Get the [frick] out my page! :) uahaha!

@Bengals1209

Well, Pine might be a good Captain America. BUT I THINK HE MIGHT BE A BETTER HAL JORDAN. He already is in the atmosphere in making galactic movies, him wearing the black mask, and dressed in green and you got your Green Lantern....hes got the grin like Hal too! lol

@Unlimited

Same Here. But damn I've heard that the IMAX experience for this was a billion times better than the regular. I didnt see it at the IMAX yet, but I will my second time. Wolverine was just a disappointment. IT had SO MUCH potential, but oh well. Saw it coming lol

After watching Watchmen in IMAX I will only goto the IMAX version of the movie, but that also because there is an IMAX theater 20 mins from my house.

Pierce_Highmen - 5/11/2009, 9:08 PM
@ Aiiwolf

What is your source? Maybe you should look at the numbers again. Because TDK made 158 million, domestic, on opening weekend. Not counting worldwide money, because we all know, movies roll out over time internationally. Star Trek sits 30th on the list of best openings all time, not bad by the way.

As for JJ Abrams suckiness. That is my opinion. Cloverfield was just a cheap rip-off of Godzilla and Blair Witch Project. If I want to see film school quality camera work, Ill go to a festival.

Its not his fault Paramount screwed up the M:I franchise. Who the hell is Ethan Hunt? M:I was all about Jim Phelps, and they screwed it up from the start. The first was ok, I have not bothered to watch it again, because of how they did Phelps. Althou I do remember Jon Voight being the best part of the film. The others were forgetable.

Then we get to Lost. Snore! Even people I know that like that show, are starting to hate it. Lets face it, its another rip-off of Gilligans Island. The guy has not done one thing original yet. Everything he has done, we've seen before. Now, he is getting into another franchise. Big Suprise.

I still think Star Trek sucks, I've watched the old movies, and they are BORING! At least Star Wars has a good story, not like Star Trek, where the whole movie takes place in a ship. Star Trek SUCKS!!!

SOMEBODY at WARNER BROTHERS PLEASE call J.J. Abrams and his writer homies Orci and Kurtzman and sign them up to take the reigns on the SUPERMAN franchise!!!!!

STAR TREK RULED! Give them Superman. If they could make a Superman flick HALF as good as Star Trek it would be the best Supes film since the first one.

I see your point. but Star trek came out Friday. TDK came out days earlier, so I dont think their counting The tuesday midnight - until sunday for the dark knight.... Star trek on the other hand came out friday midnight. but, you could be right, but like I said I POSTED this from a source, and my source is on thsi page, go check it out. I dont think Yahoo, news has inaccuracy lol.

As for Mission Impossible, and Star Trek. The whole reason to make the Third was to finish the series. I never watched the MI Tv show, so I dont know anything about it, nor do I want to lol. M.I. trilogy is fine the way it is for me. I liked the First one. Found the second one boring, except for tom cruises hair, and his ACTUAL stunt he did on that motorcycle, and I found Hoffman's character enetertaining, and the over all plot badass. Now if that followed Ethan hunt, or really explained who he was? No, youre right...it probabaly didnt go into any detail...but we as the fans know hes a spy, and he worked for an agency that is known to betray each other.

As for Star Trek. The 60s show was awesome. My mom used to watch that when she was young, as for the movies have really seen them all just bits and pieces. All I can say is This Star Trek Movie was betetr than any STAR WARS movie I've seen. Why because the ratings, and the way society is acting over the fact that it is APPEALNG to everyone. rather than being a geek movie is a big deal. Saying Star Wars has a better story makes no sense...4,5,6 were great....but 1,2,3 were shit. lol

Star trek TMP was ehh....boring.
Wrath of Khan....amazing!
Search for Spock amazing!
The rest of the sequels were decent....

Now I'm not a FAN of STAR TREK....but I love STAR WRAS. But, this movie, practically blew the death star away. Thats just how I feel about it....If this movie wasnt as entertaining, appealing, and didnt have character developemnt...I would be dissing it right now.

But the fact that its a REBOOT Requel, acknowledge the original shows alot of respect, and for that it yet retains its FAN BASE, and adds NEW FANS to its BANDWAGON as myself. THE MOVIE WAS GREAT! From Beginning to END!

Ps: I really hope that George Lucas finsih the Clone Wars on cartoon network....and works his way to finishing his 9 part story. Because we still have parts 7,8,9...I mean god forbid if somehting happens to him. We wont know what happen to Luke's kids? and rise of the jedi...and old republic. But, soemthing tells me they might re-do 4,5,6....but who knows...its hollywood.
