Well, this was unexpected; Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice screenwrite David S. Goyer is penning a VR Darth Vader film. This is not a drill. Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice screenwriter David S. Goyer took to the stage during Star Wars Celebration to make the announcement about his latest project: a Darth Vader virtual reality movie. The news comes fromThe Verge,  and Goyer says not only are you gonna be in the story, but you are going to interact with the characters and the world you're around.

You are the visitor in this story that is happening in and around you, and to a certain extent you might even have some effect on. You can pick up things, you can open things. You can push things, you can walk. You can touch characters.

The difference between cinema and television and VR — particularly with the fidelity that [the xLab] team is working on, is that you really feel like you there. The sense of presence isn’t just a buzzword. And it’s surprisingly very emotional. It can make you sad, and make you lean in, and make you feel for a character in a way you haven’t before. In a way that you can’t really do in any other medium. And it can scare you.

Well, what do you think? Do you find this project exciting or moronic? Leave your thoughts down below.

@JoelMcCronin

Not a movie.

From CBR:

"Although this Darth Vader project has been widely referred to as a movie, ILMxLab is quick to emphasize that it’s not that, but rather “a story experience in virtual reality.” What form that will ultimately take remains to be seen."

I look forward to interactive cinema that allows me to lean in and touch the characters.

One day when they release a VR conversion of the Big Lebowski, I'm going to put my face between John Turturro's legs and sniff that ballsack.

Seriously though, how is this technology not going to devolve into just frustrated attempts by the audience to see what can and can't be interacted with? It's like those old text adventure games where the first command people enter is always "take off your pants". Let's say for the sake of argument that they put Felicity Jones in his Vader game.

Either they indulge the boob touchers, or they deny them. Both are actually pretty bad choices. Like so many of the current generation VR tech demos that rely on a very limited space or teleportation to navigate the game, it severely limits the immersion and sense of freedom that VR is supposed to have if you can only interact with it in a very few preprogrammed ways. On the other hand, any indulging of prurient play starts down an immensely slippery slope for it to be mainstream technology.

Just like 3D, this whole thing looks to me like a technology in search of a purpose, and that only works if you have Apple convince people to buy it without knowing what it's for. As much as I would like to see gaming and film to move in this direction, I just think the tech isn't ready until we have computers smart enough to extrapolate and predict people's behavior organically and adapt the experience to the user on the fly.

@Superheromoviefan - The Martha scene actually makes sense if you understand its meaning. But yeah. I imagine he wrote the Granny's Peach Tea, his version of the creation of Doomsday. The scenes and situations that even its most stalwart defenders have a problem with were more than likely on him.

Good luck, Disney. You're going to need it. If his horrific influence seeps into your Marvel Studios properties, you are going to have the same problems DC Films did.
